sOuth Like South, where the birds fly in the Winter. Despite their stellar album repertoire, these lads from the UK don't get the notoriety that they are due. Hopefully their new album, You Are Here (release date April 29th via Young American/Bluhammock Music) will garner some attention from critics and fans from everywhere. South will be supporting their album release with a US tour next month

Joel Cadbury, Jamie McDonald and Brett Shaw are South and hail from the UK. The three met in secondary school and have been releasing records since 2001 when they debuted with the album From Here On In. Their new album due in May is called You Are Here. They sound like a cross between The Stone Roses and Genesis circa Trick of The Tail...This song is from their forthcoming album, a warm and
Yes, another link-burst, filled with the various and the sundry. Artists and others linked below include . Off we go, then... For a city that's cruelly passed over by the occasional cool tour (by bands that feel NYC is close enough to count), you really can't beat Boston's good fortune lately. Not only are we getting that visit in June from the reunited Swervedriver, but we're going to be

UK's South announce their upcoming American release, You Are Here , arriving on April 15th, via bluhammock music/Young American Recordings. With a national tour planned for later this spring, South are preparing for a stateside takeover. Their fourth record, and first release on bluhammock music/Young American Recordings, You Are Here , is the band's most creative, exciting and capitalizes on South's expanding public profile here in the United States, which has grown by leaps and bounds with their music featured in the Academy Award-nominated film "Sexy Beast," on HBO's "Six Feet Under," and on the popular [...]
If you read a lot of music blogs you get the impression that next week everyone is heading to South by Southwest. (And putting on a day party.) Which isn't true. More don't than do, I think. But if you live in NYC you can reap the benefits of a lot of UK/European bands stopping on their way to or from the festival. The bands also tend to play normal length shows in New York, as opposed to 30-minute, wham-bam sets at SxSW. Add a trip to Hill Country or Fette Sau before one of these shows, and it will [...]

Love is a funny thing. Lots of folks are blathering about love today, some may even be feeling it. Me, I'm wallowing in it. You see, the new Vusi is here. The new album, called Naledi Ya Tsela in Africa but translated for the March 6 US release to Guiding Star , features a raft of guest artists, including Derek Trucks and longtime Vusi supporter Dave Matthews. Mahlasela wrote and recorded this album as he toured the globe. Its soul-stirring title is very much a product of the new friends he's met and [...]

Thanks to the always wonderful Wendy over at Toolshed, I get a nice sampling of promo music to sort thru. One of the latest to arrive in the mailbox is South's double-disc DVD and CD package entitled Up Close And Personal which hit the shelves on October 10th. "It’s a very exciting time for London’s indie rock heroes, South. Last April saw the release of their critically acclaimed third studio album, Adventures in the Underground Journey to the Stars, which coincided with the band’s extensive tour of North America. This fall, South will return to the [...]
SOUTH "Adventures In The Underground Journey To The Stars" How did it get to be October already? I'm still counting on a beach weekend. Guess it's not going to happen. Anyway, Little Elpees is back, sorry, did you miss me? I'm not one to succumb to hype. It definitely puts me off. But, I am a curious being, like most of us. British bands get loads of hype. Not the kind

Last Friday, I went to see South at The Bottleneck. I was excited to see them at such a small venue, considering the rest of their tour was going to be playing huge rooms as support for The Strokes. When I showed up (right before the South set), there were only about 50 people in the room, which was fine by me (no fighting to get a spot, no freakishly tall guy standing in front of me). It's great because when only 50 people show up to see a band, all 50 of them love the band. [...]

I used to watch a lot of TV as a kid. Like A LOT. Naturally, as I got older there was less time for boob-tubing and the television landscape is quite different now with the advent of TV-on-DVD and cable shows that run on their own schedules, but I still get a bit of a tingle when September comes and with it, the new (network) television season. I'm of the opinion that despite the amount of utter dreck on the air, that we're still in the middle of something of a television renaissance right now. I [...]
Hello all. The Rock'n'Roll Star has asked me, as a fellow band member, to contribute a summer mix for your listening pleasure. I have to say it is way intimidating to follow the most EXCELLENT mix by Adidas1, but I'll give it a whirl. So The Rock'n'Roll Star is the new music expert. Adidas1 is the Worldbeat and Hip-Hop master. What do I know? Well, give a listen and leave a comment, because I have no idea. I think I like driving guitars and shiny pop, but it's still [...]

If you are not familiar with South , then now is the time. The London trio mix electronics with the standards of every good rock band. They gained critical acclaim with 2001's dreamy, moody release "From Here On In", later to be followed by 2003's "With The Tides" another great mix of electric/acoustic guitars, synth loops and string arrangements. This year the superb "Adventures In The Underground Journey To The Stars" was released which turned out to be a nice blend of elements from their earlier work. The band wears their Britpop influences proudly and for that [...]
