Too broke to go to Austin? Can't get out of work? Hate dealing with traffic and large crowds? Maybe just too lazy to release yourself from the couch's sweet sweet embrace? Have we got good news for you! Couch By Couchwest is the online music festival that takes place the same week as that other (couch deficient) music festival you may have heard of, you know the one. If you haven't been to the revamped Tree Bar yet, tonight's a pretty good night to check it out.

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. Welcome to the top 10, albums that to be quite honest, could all be number ones, but hey it wouldn't be a list without some order. These are the thoroughbreds. I'm sure [...]

This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Judging by this list, I needed music to be a salve more than a release valve this year. I also never expected my favorite album to come from someone who held the [...]

well, here it is the unofficial captains dead top 14 of the year list. i say unofficial because as there are a few more contributors lurking about, they may have their own top whatever list, and i hope they share said list with the class. not much has changed since i did my premature list back a few months ago. at least in the top 5/6 department. i went through the site and re-listened to everything i had tagged as "best of 20113 and after listening to these records, some changes definitely needed to be made. most notably the inclusion [...]

Appalachian Garage-Folk Comes to Brooklyn The thinking man's garage-folk rockers Southeast Engine are returning to Brooklyn's Rock Shop this Saturday in support of their latest offering, Canary . Like Titus Andronicus' The Monitor, Canary uses old shit as lens to see new shit. As gross as that sounds, its actually pretty good. Instead of focusing on the Civil War, Canary uses the the lives of Appalachian Ohio families during the Great Depression as a backdrop for its lamentations on [...]

Words by Jim It's really hard to remember how bands got their music out before the advent of the internet. How did that work? I seriously have no idea and I guess if you weren't signed to a label, well, you're shit out of luck. Small labels barely existed and bands scrapped their way around local towns. Blog was just a funny word inside someones head. Man. Sounds like the dark ages to me. So it's only fitting that the internets have brought me a band that harkens back to the days long before [...]

This past weekend, I attended Days 2 and 3 of the Nelsonville Music Festival in Nelsonville, Ohio, which took place at Robbins Crossing at Hocking College. The festival's three-day lineup focused primarily on folk artists, but as you'll see, the 2011 slate was a rather diverse sampling of genres. Compared to other music festivals I've [...]

The lead up to Coachella (see the Coachella Mix) and Record Store Day (extensive RSD mixes with rare songs), meant that we didn't get to all of the Best New Releases for the week of April 12th. In addition to the regularly scheduled releases that week, there were the hundreds of limited edition vinyl releases [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

holy shnikeys have i been missing out! i know southeast engine has been around for a little while now, actually since 2000 so more than a little while, but why in the hell havent i paid attention to em before? they're on misra, one of my top 3 favorite labels, people i respect dig em, etc, etc... so im about 3/4 of the way through their latest canary , and ill be damned if aint one of the finest records i have heard this year. all go as far to say its the second best, next to [...]
...as we previously mentioned, Southeast Engine just released an excellent new disc, Canary. The band are scheduled to stop in to Canal Street Tavern this Saturday night [with The Motel Beds] to conclude an extended tour. Today, the band issued a video via Paste for the track "Red Lake Shore". Have a look and then [...]
Adeline Of The Applachian Mountains New Growth Southeast Engine is a Americana Folk band from Athens Ohio. I've had the distinct pleasure to have an early copy of this album. The album plays as a narrative about an Appalachian family at the turn of the 20th century. It's epic, wonderful sounding, and a great story to hear. I'm not sure of the validity of the story, whether its fiction or nonfiction; regardless this is one great sounding album. The album plays like a troupe of backwoods nomads [...]

Indí-fólkrokkararnir frá Ohio í Southeast Engine áttu einn óvæntasta glaðning ársins 2009, plötuna From the Forest to the Sea .

Sonny & the Sunsets Play the Echo on Friday I caught Sharon Van Etten's sold out set at the Satellite on Friday. She sounded really good (as always) and has grown a lot as a live performer. Check her out if you get the chance. Kind of an underwhelming line up of shows this week (especially considering last week)... Monday 3/28/11 [Pick of the Night] Frank Fairfield / Craig Ventresco @ Redwood [Recommended] Living Things [...]
