In the wake of Record Store Day, it seems that there's another pretty big week of new releases to close out the month of April. Both Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Thompkins have new DVDs courtesy of Comedy Central, Ryan Adams and LP both have live sessions out, and electro clash remnants Soviet release "Life Begins at Retwirement" (pictured). Of course, that's just the start of things with new records from The Maccabees , The Dandy Warhols , and Toro Y Moi as well. We possibly [...]
In the second and final installment of our end-of-year link bait extravaganza we list our favorite local songs from the past 12 months. Again, we aren't purporting these to be "the best" songs, just our personal faves. We heart these, you may too. Soviet - Kids In My Backyard ( MP3 ) Sealion - Steampunk Jetpack ( MP3 ) Mind Spiders - No Romance ( MP3 ) Fergus and Geronimo - Wanna Know What I Would Do? ( Stream ) St Vincent - Cheerleader ( MP3 ) ( via ) RTB+Last Joke [...]
Melodyia Ensemble - Labyrinth Like a Soviet Axelrod; the fuzz guitars, the going into the final battle brass band and the knuckle biting'ly good breaks that have almost no right to be there. When I say it has the Russian/Soviet thing about it, I don't say this with a knowledge of the time, place and what was going on culturally - I mean the horns remind of some I heard in Rocky IV. A bento box of jazz funk fuzz fusion. A remarkably good track from a rare LP.
One of my all time favorite Russian beatsmiths, Fama Eightyseven , released a 2 part single back in 2010 entitled, Not Used Pieces . I thought I had everything from him up to date but apparently not, must've overlooked this one somehow. The two tracks seem to be somewhat everlasting with each listen even though they are just ordinary track lengths. Exquisite Soviet nu-soul beats for ears drums to absorb and to make your head bop ever so lightly. Trust me, these sounds will not disappoint. Check out his bandcamp and [...]
An exciting thing has been happening in DFW the past couple of months as band of local youngsters have exploded onto the local seen seemingly out of nowhere, quickly commandeering the attention of north Texas music fans, practically demanding to be taken seriously, converting non-believers with each successive live performance. We proudly count ourselves among the growing throng of Soviet faithful, who have gone from Soviet ignorant to Soviet apologists in an alarmingly short span of time. Because, let's face it; these guys are kind of badass, and are hands down the most prolific outfit we've ever come [...]
Speaking of cool upcoming Club Dada shows... We hope you can all make it out to Deep Ellum March 9th. Yes, even you are invited Mr. Chris, although, truth be told, you really wouldn't want to meet us. Still though, feel free to come check out our favorite young lads Soviet who's live set is exponentially more ear-blistering than their early EP's, with not a hint of the "childishness" one might expect. Grapevine cow-punkers County Lines and Dallas' Sea Lion (which features members of Hats & Statues) are also some the best bands in town that [...]
seamonster - "oh, appalachia (soviet remix)" (download) Last March, Gold Robot Records released the super-limited Seamonster mini album Two Birds . As a bonus treat, Gold Robot offered a FREE digital companion remix EP called These Bones for those who purchased the vinyl. The remix EP featured reworkings from electro pop whiz SOVIET , Meanest Man Contest , Roman Ruins , myself and others. This SOVIET remix completely flips the [...]
Earlier this week over on his blog Jaime Falcon had a pretty revealing post which pretty much pulled back the curtain on this whole 'music blog culture' we all try so hard to perpetrate, and as hard as it is to admit, everything he said was pretty true. It is a constant struggle to fight off seemingly endless promo emails and press releases that flood the ole inbox, but we do our best to try to not get so caught up in their trends, and to stay pretty true to ourselves by only covering music we judge to [...]
Some totally stellar lo-fi art rock came out this week in the form of Soviet's Forever Today EP . Best part is these kids are from right here in our own backyard, and we all know music sounds so much better when it is local. Well probably. Anyway it is kind of criminal how little buzz has surrounded their latest release thus far. Head over to their Bandcamp page where the first 200 199 of you cheap bastards can download it for free . [...]
~*Updates*~ The Bloodsugars (Label Feature: Engine Room Recordings ) - Indie / Pop / Big Beat - New York, USA Their press release sums them up well: "Imagine a house designed by Paul Simon, built by Prince, and decorated by The Flaming Lips and you'll have some idea of where The Bloodsugars live." They've also grown immensely since I last covered them in the ERR label feature some months ago, catchier and synthier than ever. Mind you, this isn't a retro-rehashing- this is unmistakably their own sound. Stereogum had premiered the Bloodsugars' [...]
soviet - "commute" (download) I saw these guys open for Add N To X back in 2005 and I fell in love with them. They put on a great show, and they're record was great. I went a few years without ever thinking about them until I saw Soviet show up on a collaboration with Erlend Oye (Kings of Convenience/Whitest Boy Alive, etc), so I decided to dig this record up again, and amazingly, it still stands up. This stuff is sort of timeless. It's [...]
Here's a track from The Reckless General 's flagship band The Soviets. Although a lot of ears may not be familiar with The Soviets, they've got a large, polished rock sound that sounds fit for an arena. If you like what you hear, you can buy their debut EP Who We Are at their MySpace . The Soviets - The Waitress | YouSendIt Pigeons and Planes
Image From Here A couple from last year and a couple more recent. Definitely ones that I am getting more familiar with and like. There is great indie music everywhere these days. I love it, for sure! You know, I post a lot of power pop bands on this blog and that is mainly because I love that genre of music. The Harrisburg, PA-based rock 'n roll quartet The Jellybricks have been around the circuit for awhile now. Goodnight To Everyone is their fourth full length release. The band is fun, [...]
Some people just want to listen to dance music. Today, I am playing a song for those in the world of dance music. Soviet is a band from NYC who won me over years back at SXSW, and they are just now releasing the follow-up to to their debut; the new album is titled Spies in the House of Love. Apparently it was recorded long ago, but is just now seeing the light of day. Take a listen and move those feet. Download: Soviet - Photographs [MP3]

New Track from Soft Metals
My boy Nick passed this track along, and it's got several interesting little twists that really made me a fan of Soft Metals today. I began falling for the atmospheric wash that breached my ear drums for the first few seconds, but then it dropped some electronic beats before fleshing out the track with some female vocals. I mean, if you're going to make electronic music, it should sound like this; reminds me of Soviet . So if you're a fan, like I am, be sure to give the band a good listen, [...]

World Music Wednesday! The Red Army Choir: Songs from the Motherland
By Sweet Sound of Sunrise Think of typical folk music. And when I say folk music, I don't mean protest songs from the 1960s. I mean Eastern European songs about the life of a soldier, women, and the country so old and familiar that everyone who speaks the language knows the lyrics. Then, pick a folk song you like and make it gratuitously epic by amassing a choir of men with powerful voices - and uniforms, of course - and make it sound like [...]
