Well well well, coming up on our two year anniversary here at Bob Dylan Friday and I'm still not done celebrating Bob's birthday quite honestly. 70 years old! After living the way he did, and that pesky little heroin addiction in 1966, that came out right before his birthday - this is a fucking miracle. [...]
The second in a five-part series that features covers of every single Bob Dylan song, in alphabetical order. Today's installment goes from F through J, for a total of over 50 more covers.
During the course of an 18-year career, Katrina and the Waves released 77 songs. Most people, however, only remember one: "Walking on Sunshine." The indelible pop hit is getting the red carpet treatment for its 25th birthday. Last Monday, NPR devoted a segment on All Things Considered to it, which you can listen to at NPR.org . Katrina and the Waves released a made-to-look-old music video for a new remix (watch it below). The Soweto Gospel Choir brought some South African rhythms to the tune. Glee gave the song the Broadway-camp [...]
It's a different sort of cover day at Coffee. I only discovered this choir because Minicapt was kind enough to send a couple of songs. Now I have several in my collection. The choir sings a mixture of gospel with just about every other genre of music. They are amazing. This song is from 2007's African Spirit. MP3 File yousendit
As the political campaigns on both sides of the fence beat their drums louder, election day draws nearer and we find the time to make a decision upon us. It has already been a historical campaign thus far - with a female up for Vice President on one side, and an African American leading the [...]

Ah, it's covers. I love covers. I'm not sure why I have such a fascination with one band playing another's music, but it always has (and always will) intrigue me. Sometimes they bring something new to the song or emphasize it in a way you never thought of it. Sometimes it's just really, really shitty. We'll try to avoid those ones. To start things off, I (Kraig) will take you out to Africa for my selections. Mysterious Ways - Angelique Kidjo (originally by U2) Both of the tracks [...]

"Paul and I wanted to develop an easy entry point for the growing global community where they could get more involved and learn something deeper about Africa. It's really a focus on the key successes of several regions, and the African artists who originate from these areas. It's our goal for the public to learn more about all the good that's happening in Africa . We are trying to garner excitement about the culture, in addition to drawing people toward the struggles of Darfur , etc. This is a project which celebrates Africa !" [...]
I was fascinated with this concept album when I first read about it: Twelve artists and musical groups from all parts of Africa gather together to cover U2 songs with traditional African instrumentation, percussion, and even languages. In many cases, the songs are completely restructured into something you can feel rising from the ground up, the beats thumping into your deepest hollows. In The Name of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 features artists like Angelique Kidjo ( previous post ), Les Nubians, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, and an oddly [...]

Blizzard conditions in the Cascade Mountains. A landslide of support for Barak Obama in the Washington State Democratic caucuses . So why is it no powerful natural force comes to mind when I think about the Grammy Awards? They happened. Yawn. The Grammies that SoundRoots readers might be most interested in include: Best Traditional World Music Album: African Spirit by Soweto Gospel Choir Best Contemporary World Music Album: Djin Djin by Angelique Kidjo Best Latin [...]
Delighted to report some of the worthy winners in tonight's Grammy Award competition. The main categories that interest me are the traditional ones. And I've already featured blog posts about most of the 2007 winners when these recordings were initially released. But it's worthwhile highlighting them again now that they've achieved new [...]
