Meet Ezra Funkhouser, a Chicago electronic musician who goes by the name go SP-33. He sent me a project of his awhile and ago and I've been holding on to it. Chopping up Lil' Wayne's lines from The Carter and dubbing 'em over John Carpenter's Escape from New York score sounds risky - ya gotta appease two different crowds, the hip-hop heads and fanatics of Carpenter's cult classic. Escape from tha Carter is not your average concept remix album, unlike 500 Days of Weezy , which was nice, Chicago electronic musician SP-33 goes one step further and transforms Wayne's records into something completely different, it's a sound with a lot of dark energy infused into it. Sometimes Lil Wayne's influence on the album isn't very obvious, but you can still hear it, as if his lost soul was bumping around the depths of each track. And still others, like vodka and vermouth, seem to work against all odds. But SP-332s (aka Ezra Funkhouser) reworking of Lil Wayne and John Carpenter's score for Escape from New York is oddly compelling. Sort of like 800% slowed-down Bieber without the novelty act. Carpenter's menacing, murky, molasses palette is the perfect foil for Weezy's ping pong brilliance. A much better mix than, say, the unfortunate raprock placenta that was Re-Birth .
