Whatever you're expecting a band named Gold Lake to sound like, that's exactly what you're going to get from this Brooklyn-via-Madrid outfit. The band's new album, Years , was mixed by none other than Phil Ek, who has produced the likes of The Shins and Fleet Foxes. While there is no official word about when the album is going to see the light of day, the band is releasing a two song single on June 18th to whet the appetites of potential listeners. "We Already Exist" is my introduction to the trio, and it's a breathless, layered affair [...]

No sooner have we looked to northwestern Spain and to next month's Primavera Sound than we're back in Barcelona – at least musically speaking – as we turn to next month's Sónar . The one and indeed only International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art this year commemorates its 20th anniversary, and to celebrate it boasts a line up of utmost refinement pooled from the spheres of electronica and organica alike. As with our every Fest Bests feature, we were unable to include everyone we're restively awaiting over in Cataluña and as such the [...]

Introducing | Lost Tapes Words by Mark Robinson There seems to be an influx of Spanish sun-kissed indie-pop making its way over to these shores at the moment. There was the gorgeous shoegaze glizz of Big Summer a few weeks ago, and now Lost Tapes are here, treading along the same path, albeit starting off with the tonally brighter sound of ‘ War in the Netherlands ’. Pure sunshine in a bottle that somehow makes the grey skies and rain outside seem pleasant (almost). [...]
It's almost here y'all!! The long awaited album by Spanish band Crystal Fighters it's a few days away, and this guys are doing things right. Today I received the next leaked track from their upcoming May 27th release "Cave Rave", and every time we get a new track, it makes it easier for the world to fall in love with this upcoming album. The new track is called " LA Calling"; this tropical track comes just in time for the warming weather here in the US, which makes us all think on sunshine and fun. The album is [...]
Frozen Galaxies is a phenomenal follow-up to a fantastic debut album. It is a good sign when a band shows willingness to evolve and expand their sound and is able to get results out of doing so, and Pyramidal’s refusal to rest on their laurels should make them rising stars in the psychedelic rock scene. By John McLaughlin
Normally, the first thing I do when I arrived in a new city is head upwards. I climb towers, cathedrals and columns to see the city laid out before me, seeing how the streets interlock and the buildings interconnect (or not). Madrid doesn't have any obvious buildings to climb, so I stayed down, sitting in Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor watching life unfold all around. I saw: Street entertainers galore in Plaza Mayor: A grown man playing a baby, reacting with [...]

Aioli makes everything better Truly, I think condiments are the best. And maybe they don't all necessarily outshine the food they clothe, but they do possess the power to transform. Sinus-scorching honey mustard turns a mediocre sandwich into an outrageous one; a zany marinade makes brisket wildly addictive; and a fresh summer tomato sauce turns boxed whole wheat pasta into a revelation (and that's no easy feat). Without sauces, dressings, and spreads, food would be without magic. And so, in celebration of food's under-appreciated sidekick, I wanted to share two of my favorite recipes [...]

Cut Your Hair – Mad Love Now this is possibly the strangest but weirdly catchy song I’ve heard for a while. Opening with the lyrics “Raveee…” does make me think “what is this”? But I’m soon over that when I hear the wonderfully soothing guitar strings combine with the melodic piano riffs and vocals that may remind you of something from the 90’s . At first I assumed this was a generic indie pop band from Manchester or somewhere but after a little bit [...]

I've recently come back from a trip to Madrid. The buildings there are a mix and styles and influences, reflecting different cultures and rulers - Moorish, Austrian, French, Spanish - mixing over the centuries. The weather was not kind to me in Madrid, with cloudy, milky, grey-white skies almost throughout my stay. I decided, then, to splash in some colour from the city's flowers (many of which were growing in the botanic garden ) which contrast nicely with the pale, ice-cream colours of the ornate architecture. Incidentally, I did something [...]
Rather literally on the horizon this one, for Cüneyt Sepetçi & Orchestra Dolapdere hail from the azure realm of Istanbul – a city which itself seems to be composed of little other than a bedazzling sunset splayed across an enticing hue blue as a nazar boncuğu amulet. It, or rather the city's Roma gypsy outpost of Dolapdere to be that bit more precise, is the (at least to me) uncharted territory clarinet doyen Sepetçi now calls home although he may be about to be brought to that slightly more occidental attention by Albuquerque duo A Hawk and A Hacksaw, who've [...]

Sau Poler is from Badalona, a little town on the outskirts of Barcelona. He started making music one year ago as a way to explore his needs and to have some fun. Influenced by artists like Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Four Tet, Bonobo and all sorts of genres (mainly hiphop and electronica), he managed to create his very own style. In early Spring 2013 he finished his first EP 'A Soundless Echo', on Atomnation. When making the songs for 'A Soundless Echo', Poler tried to get in a mood that inspired him. "It can come from a [...]

There are songs that get ya goin and there are songs that get you going! (see the difference?) Yuksek's remix of 'Right Now' takes the chorus from the original and pumps you into a disco ready head·fuck. Certainly the latter of the two. It's such a perfect groove to dance to when it's on top (the chorus, that is). My only beef with the piece is the middle gets a little too indie transitional, but it picks up soon enough for a good ending. [...]

Eye Emma Jedi 's "Places" is the sort of guitar-driven, adrenaline-pumping indie rock we don't nearly get enough of these days. Hailing from Norway, these Scandinavian chaps spent 100 days outside the village of Marbella on the Southern coast of Spain recording their debut album. "Places" is our first taste of said LP and reminds us of Fang Island in all the right ways. Fun fact: Dan Croll used to play with these guys. So chew on that. Stream the track below. May is almost here! The exciting thing about it, is that the long awaited album by Spanish band Crystal Fighters , will be released on May 27th. The band just recently leaked the newest track from "Cave Rave", and it's called "You & I" which has a very African/Caribbean sound; with it they've also sent over a video to go with it, now be aware that although the song might sound upbeat, the video is not...let's just say I have a knot in my throat as I type this...but is definitely worth watching. By the way have I [...]
