Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Winnipeg is a hotbed for ghetto funk. We've seen some incredible acts come through this city - NICK THAYER being the latest. We can thank our friends at MUSIC FIRST for this show. I can't imagine a producer as diverse as Thayer. Everything he does falls loosely into breaks, but the tempo ranges in his production makes him stand out. Yes, there's breaks plain and simple, but also some of the best ghetto funk and dubstep I've heard [...]
Upon hearing Active Child 's debut album, You are All I See , listeners have immediately detected something distinctly spiritual behind the harp and choir-skilled falsetto vocals. While the sound is arguably more heavenly than say, Joanna Newsom's sound, there is a noticeable air of presage and remorse. "Sometimes I'm scared to admit it," the man behind Active Child, Pat Grossi, concedes. This is his response when I propose that, much like Sparkadia's album The Great Impression , You are All I See is as much about questioning the consignment to a religion as it [...]

Tweet Photo © Tom Oxley Originally starting life as a four-piece, Australia's Sparkadia released their first album a few years ago, only to break up a year later. However, front man and founder Alex Burnett did not give up on his initial vision. Keeping the band name, he transplanted himself to London, recording his first solo effort as Sparkadia with the production help of Mark Tieku ( Florence And The Machine ). [...]
London-based, Aussie native Sparkadia (aka Alex Burnett), is bringing the best of the 80's back with his debut album, The Great Impression, released via OK! Good Records . Filled with anthemic synth melodies, paired with Burnett's soft soaring vocals, the release leaves just that - a big impression. And Burnett goes big on the album - collaborating with songwriter/producer Mark Tieku (Florence and the Machine) for the project, and playing almost all the instruments, which includes everything from gongs, to metal scaffolding, to scrap metal. The [...]

If you frequent Hard Candy (as you should!) you will know that we love finding out what the artists we love are listening too! Most recently one of our favorites CocknBullKid took time out while on tour with Janelle Monae to share with us her favorite acts of 2011! We could not be more excited about her varied selections of London based musicians, and we expect you'll feel the same! So when you've finished watching her talk about her choices, check out some tracks by the talented artists she chose [...]

March 8, 2011 Anita Blay AKA CocknBullKid is a regular gal. No surprises there (maybe). When we turn up towards the end of the support group Sparkadia 's set Blay is to be found in the audience enjoying the music like everyone else who has paid to see her/them. The atmosphere is somewhat euphoric as the audience wait in anticipation to experience Blay's unique brand of pop quirkiness (and incidentally, she doesn't disappoint). Meanwhile, we get to hear a suited and booted bunch of Australian lads playing intelligent alternative pop in the style [...]
Following the success of a debut album Sparkadia frontman, Alex Burnett, didn't know that all of his band members would leave. And while he clearly appreciated their work it seems he took the exodus in stride when he says "because with the second record [The Great Impression] the other guys wanted to do different things with their lives, I was given the freedom to do whatever. So if I felt like recording a gong or hitting a metal pole or creating a gospel choir with my vocals then I didn't have to ask anyone… I just went with the flow. [...]

The Middle East - Jesus Came To My Birthday Party Another dreamy folk song from the impressive Townsville band. The name Sparkadia may be familiar, but this line-up sure isn't. Sparkadia before was an alt-pop four-piece from Australia that pulled up their roots and moved to London for fame and fortune. The band released 'Postcards', which charted in the top 25 albums chart in their home country in 2008. But Sparkadia today is one person, Alex Burnett, who has decided to soldier on solo in the pursuit of creating pop gems. Ok, so I admit it: the name of the single, in all its two syllable, four character [...]
