Sparks - "(Baby, Baby) Can I Invade Your Country" Teddy was 13 and under the impression that he was much more good-looking than he actually was. He wore his wing-tipped jeans like they didn't fit like a rotten pear. He walked proudly with his chest sticking out in front, blissfully oblivious to his sinking hunched shoulders and his plunking, swishing gait. He spoke slowly, as if he poshly needed to taste all his syllables, taking no notice of his own condescending whine, nor the splay-toothed spittle that formed at the sides of his mouth. Despite [...]

This weekend just gone a minor twitter storm in a tea cup brewed. “What’s on your iPod?” Ellie Goulding was asked in an interview. “I really love the alternative music scene and people like Fleet Foxes and Wild Beasts, but I’ve also got Friendly Fires to Rihanna and Beyonce. I’ve even got Don’t Stop Believing ,” Ellie answered. It didn’t find favour with the controversial hormonal punk-pop London four-piece Pris who tweeted Ellie’s answer to their followers with the statement “Why Ellie [...]
(")_(") ! What a delightful treat in my inbox this weekend. Boston group Chop Chop is composed of Catherine Cavanagh and some space dust of an unknown extraterrestrial origin (Jason Tajima and Justin Alabart). The band got their music on How I Met Your Mother and I just really like that show. They cite their influences as Unicorns , Rainbow Hearts and Gymnastics . These two upbeat tunes sound like Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis on vegetables and vitamins. Their latest effort was [...]

Interior Design is the fifteenth album by Sparks being released in 1988. Once again another album from the Mael geniuses that most folks have never heard and didn't do anything commercially. Two tracks did make it to the Billboard Hot Dance Music chart. The vinyl pressing only had 10 tracks and CD versions of the album included a number of bonus tracks including three versions of the LPs final track "Madonna", a remix of "So Important" and the short instrumental "The Big Brass Ring". Long out of [...]
Prince is doing three shows tonight at as-yet-unannounced locations, and here's what else is up: ► The Twilight Singers visit the Music Box behind their fifth album (and first in five years), "Dynamite Steps." Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s and Jonneine Zapata support. ► Austin quartet White Denim hits the Echo behind its newest release, "D" (out this week), with locals Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits opening. ► Portland's Morning Teleportation (that's the video for the title track to their album "Expanding Anyway," above), [...]

Ra Ra Riot covers Sparks' favorite 'Saccharin and The War.'
Breanne Düren today released her debut EP, entitled Sparks , which has climbed to number three on the iTunes Pop Chart. Fans can download the album's single "Gold Mine" for free on iTunes as this week's "Discovery Download". USA Today recently described "Gold Mine" as "a girl group throwback with a modern streak of grrrl power," and Entertainment Weekly recently told its readers if you "love Adele's 'Rumor Has It', then try 'Gold Mine.'" Artist Direct said, "This is the perfect summer pop album, [...]

Yesterday, Wolfgang's Vault unveiled a Video Vault featuring 50 years worth of footage lovingly restored by archivist Braden Towne and his team. Towne detailed the painstaking process of prepping this footage for the internet age in a fascinating blog entry . Best part? You can stream each video for free. Since I've spent most of the last 24 hours checking out videos on the site, I thought I'd make a list of the best clips I came across for this week's B List. I stuck with clips from the '70s [...]
Mammal Club From: Newcastle, United Kingdom Mammal Club, featured on the Devil's recent review of the Newcastle scene, Newcastle United , have emerged blinking from the darkest recesses of their north-east lock up with a copy of their debut release, The Au EP , in their tired but exhilarated hands. It's a quite stunning debut full of alt pop so complicated you need a degree in alt pop just to pass the listening test. The band [...]

3 Tracks from the forthcoming new album "Worst Thing I've Been Cursed With" and the full previous album "Eyes To The Sun" (below). Happy Easter to all! Channeling modern rock influences into anthemic choruses and themes of lust, loss and embracing your inner demons, Sparks The Rescue return with 12 impressive edgy pop-rock tracks on new album "Worst Thing I've Been Cursed With". The band's second full-length is a step forward for the band, blending sassy lyrics and the dynamic, unique vocals of frontman Alex Roy into the melodic, infectious [...]
A couple months ago I ranted about what I thought were some major problems with new vinyl releases. You can read that post here . My main points of contention were either vinyl records that didn't include a digital copy, or records that did include digital copies, but they were of poor quality with lousy ID3 tags. Some "Hall of Shame" examples I cited were El-P's Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegam ixxx3 and Kanye West's latest. Now I want to tell you about a positive example: the Foo Fighters' latest release, Wasting Light . This may be [...]
We've been fans of trip-hop songstress Natalie Walker for a few years, catching her live at various clubs in New York and Philly. Her music is cool to the sonic touch -- almost icy -- but songs like "Quicksand" (her biggest and best track) have found a few rays of warmth inside that beating electronica heart. Witness "Mars", a track from her forthcoming May 17 album Spark and a song that's already getting some solid support from a few of the trendy tastemakers at KCRW. Let's just say that this isn't impassioned [...]

Future Bass is finally getting the exposure it deserves with the Surefire Sound North American tour featuring heavyweights Ramadanman , Zed Bias , Salva and DJG . The tour makes it stop in Miami at Eve on April 23rd. Ramadanman and Zed Bias are both bass music pioneers. Founder of the extraordinary label Hessle Audio, Ramadanman started his DJ'ing career at the age of 14, spinning Deep House and Hip Hop which greatly influenced his production later in life. Discovering dubstep through making grime instrumentals for artists, Ramdanman became involved in the scene [...]

Registrato [...]

So, don't you hate it when a band you like releases an album and you hear about it like one year later? But you totally have to forgive them if they do it for Deleted Art in Malmo, Sweden. Such is the case with the most recent EP from Pterodactyl . The EP is entitled Arnold's Park , and it was a vinyl-only release. Listen. Downloadable: Arnold's Park (mp3) The EP looks like this: You can download a few more tracks from [...]
Two quick thoughts on last night’s concert ; it wasn’t a waste of time, but still plenty of work left before White Lies becomes a great live act. So don’t expect to see me queuing outside the ticket office to get tickets for their next tour. And despite my recent approval, the songs on Ritual are beyond doubt weaker than the ones on the debut , as the concert reached a completely different level ( Bigger Than Us [...]
