While Spectrals may owe a sonic debt to garage rock and early rock n' roll ballads, frontman Louis Oliver Jones may be one of the least overtly rock n' roll seeming guys out there. An unassuming, low key demeanor was on display from the beginning of the band's set opening for Cults . After announcing "We're very excited to be here, " he added, "That didn't sound very sincere," recognizing the fact that he wasn't quite at "Hello Cleveland!" or "Scream for me, Long Beach!" levels of enthusiasm. He was, however, definitely genuine and sincere, although there's very little pretense involved with his [...]

Sometimes it feels nice and indulgent to be sad, to wallow like a hopeless hippopotamus.

Live This Month: April 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #276) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. In curating this podcast, we got the nagging feeling that April is a little slow on the local album release front. We're not sure why that is - Festival fatigue? Buildup for a big summer? - but it's likely only a momentary blip. A number of [...]

Long before I arrived in Austin, I had worked out a schedule for each day that I expected to pretty much adhere to. Scheduling ahead, I'd already earmarked most of Friday and Saturday so I could be stationed at Latitude 30, starting with the Performing Right Society of the UK ( PRS ) Foundation brunch early Friday. (Early by this point of SXSW is getting out of bed and on your feet before 11 AM, which I somehow managed to do for all 5 days…) After the Polarsets interview at B.D. Riley's [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Q + A Tell All Your Friends Louis Jones, aka Spectrals , is a 21-year-old British rocker visiting America for the first time. He's doing SXSW , as any rising retro popster would, and supporting Cults on a coast-to-coast tour. By rights, he should go libertine and return to Leeds with a brined liver and stories involving Texas sheriffs. Instead, the soft-spoken singer-songwriter is hoping to leave [...]

Orlando is a city in a constant artistic struggle. Nestled in between the Touristopia of Disney/Universal and dense suburban sprawl, is the real Orlando: Audubon Park, Mills 50, The Milk District, Little Saigon – older buildings, posh intermingling with grunge, eclectic food, and a clutch of authentic venues and businesses devoted to being purveyors of local culture. In the past, art and music movements have flared up in this town and then just as rapidly dispersed, but now things are changing. Something has stuck. The culture scene in Orlando is flourishing. With the Festival Republic's recently-launched Orlando Calling [...]

We've got good stuff coming out of our ears - quite literally at the moment. So here is the latest in our somewhat ad-hoc "of the best" feature comprising a trawl of the in-box and favourite blogs to bring you eight corking tunes to help get your Friday night off to a suitably energetic start. We have Swedish punks Holograms and the clattering b-side to new 73 single ABC City and another from paisley garage band White Fence with a taste from forthcoming album Family Perfume Vol 2 called King [...]

"You're really great but... I just don't fancy you." I've been told that a few times and boy does it suck. You don't want to be nice, or fun to be with, or great company; you want to be fucking sexy. Instead you feel the opposite: debilitated as someone who slow and stumbly, as erotic as a calculator, destined to always be platonic. Judging from his beguiling new song Friend Zone ( mp3 ), it sounds like Spectrals has suffered similar agonies. I especially like the tinkly guitar at the end, and the sort of shoulder-shrugging, "oh well"-feel [...]

Slumberland Records soldier Spectrals , whose Bad Penny is one of the stronger unheralded lo-fi releases from last year, last put out a bizarre Christmas song , but now Louis Jones has posted a new track, "Friend Zone," a fuzzy, longing slow number dealing with a subject matter I know too well ( long sigh ). It's down below and available for download. Read More...
This weekend sees Subb-an playing at the launch of, Gist , a brand new deep house and techno night in Chelmsford, Essex. It's not often We Are Not A Rockband ventures outside London town but with one of the masterminds behind Gist being DJ Mag's Adam Saville, we thought it worth investigating. With Birmingham's Subb-an one of the residents for groundbreaking night Below in his hometown and one half of label One Records with Adam Shelton, we caught up with him to quiz him on playing Essex, what's new on his label and what one record he [...]
