Coming out of England, the Yorkshire area to be specific, Spectrals is the brainchild of Louis Jones. Sob Story is his second effort after the well-received debut Bad Penny. Earlier on, Jones did it all on his own but he now has his brother Will on drums as well as enlisting a rotating cast of touring members. Another key addition was that Jones enlisted JR White to handle the knobs and buttons behind the board. Calling it possibly “the best song I’ve written”, Spectrals has posted the title track from his upcoming release, Sob Story . Spectrals’s Louis Jones crafted 'Sob Story' as a country-tinged ballad, full of twanging sounds and pedal steel guitars. Jones’s vocals betray the influence of Elvis Costello , playing into the somber lyrics and musical style. 'Sob Story' is the third track to surface online in advance of the album’s release. Sob Story will be available June 3 via Wichita Recordings.
Spectrals is the project of Yorkshire musician Louis Jones, who crafted an Elvis Costello-inspired blend of pop, soul, doo-wop, and garage rock on his 2011 debut, Bad Penny . I t's obvious on Spectrals new single, "Sob Story," there's a heavy Elvis Costello influence, the slow ambling song croons like a bedroom recording, with the slight country tinge of pedal steel, it embodies the name, but really displays an elevation in Jones' songwriting and quality of recording over his previous shtick. This record is shaping up to be quite a coming of age record for the budding musician, and definitely is keeping my interest as we get closer to release date.. "Sob Story," comes from the upcoming record of the same name, out June 18th.
