Name: Rebecca Gates And The Consortium Progress Report: Former Spinanes frontwoman Rebecca Gates talks about wrapping up work on The Float , her first release in over eleven years. Most people of a certain age will first remember Rebecca Gates as the guitarist and vocalist for The Spinanes - a beloved boy/girl duo that released three excellent albums back if the crusty old '90s. After releasing a solo album of her own in 2001, Gates all but retired from indie rock, instead focusing her attention on the art world. Over the past ten [...]

Rebecca Gates & the Consortium @ Sasquatch 2011 ( nyc77style ) "For those who swooned over the sweet, sideways indie-pop of The Spinanes back in the '90s, the return of singer-guitarist Rebecca Gates can only be a good thing. Since The Spinanes' dissolution in 2000 -- the band was never much more than her and drummer Scott Plouf, who left in 1996 to join Built to Spill -- Gates has played with a variety of supporting players while working on her visual art and keeping a lower public profile. Her latest album is titled The [...]

Local H at The Brighton Bar Long Branch NJ The duo tradition of musicians goes back a long ass ways. Local H is one the greatest unknown bands who are cocky in their own right and maybe a little pissed they weren't as cute as Jack White's counter part. Alas on album their records sound just as full as their live show. They started their thing pre-grunge in 1986 and have been somehow managing to keep bringing the music post Cobain. Tonight this working band will jam it out at Brighton Bar [...]

This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite songs ever. [mp3] The Spinanes | Lines and Lines
Back in 1993 (if memory serves me correctly) I was watching the late night alternative show Mtv had on Sunday night when my ears were caught by a song called Noel, Jonah And Me . A lot of what the tv show played was mainstream "alternative" music but once in awhile they would sneak something like The Spinanes in. People who have grown up with the internet have no idea what it was like to be interested in independent music before everyone had access to it along with blogs and myspace etc etc etc. If you were lucky enough [...]

The Spinanes were a terrific guitar-and-drums two piece whose discography is consistent and underappreciated. "Suffice", on this 1992 single on Imp Records, nicely captures their catchy indie pop sound, while the Heliumy "Halloween Candy" highlights Rebecca Gates' considerable vocal talents. Side A mp3: The Spinanes - Suffice Side B mp3: The Spinanes - Halloween Candy

mp3: valency dear the spinanes, the other day when rob wrote that letter to ida talking about all the couples bands he was obsessed with a few years ago, it made me think about how i went through a similar period (mostly because of rob anyway, i've always tried to be as cool as he is). i know you two were never married, but in my mind you should have been. after scotty left things were never the same. this album however, remains one of my top 10 favorites of all time. [...]
"Tom is talking too quietly to be heard over barking boxer puppies." -- Sarah in the FOT Chat on the inaudibility of Tom's "sick voice" over the din of the canines in her care "I wonder how it is you have an ear for fake voices." -- Tom on Petey's expert detective work "Give me back my sandwich!" -- Harrison Ford, chasing down his elusive lunch for two hours in the forthcoming Raiders of the Lost Hoagie "Sounds like someone needs some Tums!" -- Philly Boy Roy, proposing [...]

Image: Erika Giovanna Klien You Earn Your Enemies (Tower Song) - Un Deux Trois Un Deux Trois is a trio of course. But "You Earn Your Enemies" is a duet of vivid clanging guitar and hissing/thumping drums -- a rough, gentle, clumsy, graceful pas de deux of faith and disappointment, praise, (but mostly) reproach. Its title is withering and just a little self-righteous. You would be too if you'd stood still and solid as a tower while your [...]

The Spinanes "Madding" Lois "Rougher" Mark De Gli Antoni "They Wave" For those of you who enjoyed all or part of Sabado de Gloria week, I thought I'd close out with one more Elliott Smith-related post, here collecting a handful of guest vocal type situations. Elliott harmonizes on the sultry, syrupy "Madding," opener to Portland indie pop fellow-travelers the Spinanes' 1996 record, Strand, Maybe as a return favor for main Spinane Rebecca Gates' [...]
Henri Cartier-Bresson Emails about olive trees and throwing paint lead to handcrafted letters and nightly conversations that cracked open my sternum so that everything I had been hiding could seep out, in color. I used to think that I wouldn't be able to do it again, the stitching back up took too long and it just hurt [...]

You know you have great friends when you don't see them for a year (or more) and when you get together it's like no time has passed at all. You can't say that about everyone, but I have been lucky to have a small group of friends from both high school and college that have given me this gift. I realized in many cases, it is a shared love of good music that keeps us tight. No matter how far away we are from each other, we have the common bond of a good song or album. This [...]

The aforementioned GOES CUBE show blew my head off it was so good. My chollo Dustin took some amazing photos of the show that capture the RAW POWAH -- I'll post a link when they're up. August is the most boring time of all in the industry I work in so I've had all kinds of free time to cyber-stalk friends & neighbors. Stumbling onto things I'm not sure that I want to see... but... cannot... look... away. I guess that's how it is in this age of photo blogs & [...]
