Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]
Moon King is the new project from Daniel Woodhead and Maddy Wilde, both of Spiral Beach. They recently released the 6-song Bog Dumb Blue Angel EP. Watch the video for the peppy title track here: The video raises some questions in my mind about copyright, but Matt Groening has enough money as far as I'm concerned. You can get a free download of the track, and more, here. Moon King have a
Austra - Lose It Took a pit stop over at Stereogum. Found this: Austra is the Toronto trio of vocalist/pianist/etc Katie Stelmanis (ex-Galaxy), drummer Maya Postepski (ex-Galaxy, currently TRUST), and bassist Dorian Wolf (ex-Spiral Beach), but the bulk of the band's promo photos feature the singer by her lonesome. Even if Stelmanis wasn't the primary songwriter, her [...]
I don't know about you guys, but I had a pretty great week. And I think I can die happy knowing Barbra Streisand is finally out there, even though it's super underwhelming.. C'est la vie I suppose. Look forward to more goodness this week. Blende - URH! (192 kbps) Dem Slackers - Let's Go (Bart B More 'Lesssgo' Remix) (320 kbps) SonicC & Autoerotique - K*M*A* (Original Mix) (320 kbps) Spiral Beach - Teddy Black (Mix Chopin Remix) (320 kbps) [...]

It's been a while since we've done a "remixery", so we'd thought it be nice to do one for the sake of nostalgia. Here are ten remixes from a talented group of producers who are most certainly on the way up. All of these remixes are essential for your iTunes (Windows Media Player too, if you are backwards like that) and if you enjoy them, remember to say hello to the people who made them via their social networking links we've provided below the download (it really does make a difference!). Have a great friday! [...]

Basically it's been a combination of the winter blahs and good ole fashioned procrastination that has caused me to neglect this review of my last show for 2009. It took place all the way back on December 19th of last year, and even I have to admit that a time period of three weeks may be pushing the boundaries of acceptable tardiness for concert reviews, but thankfully this was a memorable show and most of the details are still firmly planted in my mind. I don't know what it is, but I always like for my last show [...]

Whew... almost missed out on the first Friday Mixtape of 2010! See, it's been busy here between the hoidays, and my regular schedule has gone to the dogs whilst I'm on a short vacation with my family. Not to mention that SquirrelFood HQ is getting fresh paint, and so all my technology is unplugged, boxed and hiding beneath a drop cloth in the middle of a room, now colored "Wild Honey". Yep, sounds tasty doesn't it?. Anyway, I managed to dig out the lappy two thousand, and connect to somebody's network to upload this first volume of the year. I [...]

Here is part four of my best of Canadian albums of 2009. Silver Starling - Silver Starling Saw them at Bands Undone and they were amazing. Best tracks are Something Over Nothing, Ghosts and This Is Not A Dream Outside Love - Pink Mountaintops Love the description of the album which says: " "Outside Love" is ten songs of love and hate that read [...]

Filed under: Canada Some bands seclude themselves while they're writing music, carefully guarding their creative process from the outside world. Spiral Beach are not like those bands. The quartet, known for their exceptional approach to performance, regularly workshopped the songs they were writing for their recent album, the awkwardly titled 'The Only Really Thing,' on the streets of Toronto's hippie conclave, Kensington Market. "We wrote a lot of the songs over last summer and we were just trying them out in front of people to [...]
Just saw Where the Wild Things Are today. I think I'll have to see it again. Not because I loved it that much (though I did enjoy it), but because I think I might enjoy it more a second time. It dawned on me a couple hours later that it's almost more a dream than a story, and that I should watch it that way. Did you see it? What did you think? (artist - song - album + purchase link :: extra info) [...]

At first glance, Toronto's Spiral Beach appears to be much like any other keyboard-heavy post-punk band, mixing choppy guitars with soaring vocals and the occasional dance beat. Compared to its '80s-indebted peers, however, the outfit is much harder to categorize. The group's new album, The Only Really Thing , draws on bizarre carnival music, bombastic cabaret and Bollywood film scores to create a mish-mash sound that's unlike anything else in recent memory. "After Midnite" begins as a slinky drum-and-bass groove, swelling to a Moulin Rouge -style crescendo of whirling organs and blaring horns. The haunting "Raising [...]

Lucy Hamblin Ridiculous webhosting issues persist, so this one will be kept reasonably brief - who knows how long this window of opportunity of my site being up will remain. I've actually been told that the issues that've plagued the site for the past week or so have been resolved and am hoping that's the case, but if'n you find that things are unbearably slow or down altogether, swing by my Twitter for all sorts of colourful cursing. While downloadable/streamable/watcha ble online sessions are becoming much more commonplace, MySpace Transmissions is setting [...]

Once again, it's time to post some songs I meant to have up on the blog ages ago but then got lazy/depressed/forgetful/distr acted or simply figured that everyone else had already posted them so what's the point? until now. I'm sorry, little mp3s. Come join your brothers and sisters on the courtyard of this fine prison of mine. Just don't complain about the lack of organisation. ~ The Mary Onettes - "Puzzles" ~ ~ The Joy Formidable - "Greyhounds In The Shade" ~ ~ Spiral Beach [...]

Another decent week for new music releases. Here is part II for the week of 09-22-09. Two years after releasing their debut Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters , Glasgow's The Twilight Sad release their new LP Forget The Night Ahead on the Fat Cat Label. Forget further expands the sound that the band developed on their debut release. The sound is large, expansive and loud. James Graham's Scottish accent is stronger yet on this new LP. The guitar noise, pounding drums underscoring hidden melodies is in full force here. Influences can be felt [...]

The advent of fall brings us some ripe apples in the new release department, and this week sees the much anticipated supergroup Monsters of Folk, featuring Conor Oberst, Jim James & M. Ward, but we covered that the other day . The other noteworthy releases this week include new ones from Volcano Choir, Islands, Times New Viking, The Twilight Sad, Amy Millan, Pearl Jam, Castanets, Vic Chesnutt, Sea Wolf, Brother Ali, Noisettes, Basement Jaxx, Hallelujah the Hills, Richard Hawley, Le Loup, The Big Pink and the Roller Coaster Project, along with some reissues from Beastie Boys, Elvis Costello and [...]

Do you want fun? I said...DO YOU WANT FUN! Following the enormous success of their album, Ball , in their native Canada, Spiral Beach release their sophomore effort, The Only Really Thing , today. Known for playing in uncommon venues such as art galleries and circus spaces, the group has created a rare interactive live show that has fans and critics itching for more. So yeah, when I say they're fun, well by golly, they surely [...]
