Here are a few tracks for your weeeeekend. Unbelievably it's here. The first full week of 2008 is officially over. Anybody still keeping their resolutions? crickets chirping... Here are some tracks I lined up for you for each day of the weekend: Friday , it's not quite Saturday but shit it's been a long week so you gotta do something tonight. This sat in our mailbox for a while before I realized that we (or at least I) was not [...]

Spiral Beach comes to us from Canada and reminds us that you don't have to listen to the new, insanely brief Architecture in Helsinki record to enjoy the sound they're making- you could just listen to Spiral Beach. The band looks very young, and I think I remember reading that they are 1 , which is a good thing. When a young band puts out something as solid and enjoyable as Ball , it means that they could do even better in the future. The prominence of guitar on "Made of Stone" makes you fully [...]

check out Chromewaves for better photos from the day. On Tuesday, Spiral Beach released their second album, "Ball." This album will confirm what fans of their self-titled debut know and is sure to bring the band to the attention of many more people. They use the same sonic building blocks as their first album but manage to produce a record that is much richer and more textured. Using spooky synths and eerie vocals, capped off with rock-solid drumming and hook-filled guitar work, Spiral Beach have crafted a highly distinctive sound. The exuberance and [...]

Imagine what it would be like growing up in the '60s and '70s as the offspring of a folk musician. With all kinds of people, from hippies to philosophers, gathering at various folk circuits and festivals, you would likely know more about the world at age 10 than a suburban-based individual would at age 25. This is a reality for three out of the four members in the Toronto-based Spiral Beach . Proudly calling themselves "folkie offspring", they wear it on their sleeves proudly even if their music is hardly classifiable as folk. If anything, their eclectic mixture of [...]

Last week, I featured music from Filter. This week, I'm focusing on my favorite Canadian PR firm, Killbeat. You can thank them for many of the Why The F*ck Is No One In America Blogging About series. Besides giving me (and you all) some of the greatest Americana music from The Great White North, Jesse from Killbeat has your indie rock, your female pastoral folk-pop and your power-electro-pop bases covered. The bases are covered so well in fact, that Killbeat is giving away a grab [...]
Today I'm going to throw up (not literally) a bunch of songs that have appeared in my inbox over the past several weeks that might otherwise languish there for god knows how long if I waited to do all the proper research on them. I'd love to give them the "whole post" treatment, but this will have to suffice for now. What they all have in common is that they're catchy enough to warrant repeat listenings even if I'm not yet quite convinced that I must run out and buy the cd. [...]

Somehow I saw Spiral Beach open for Voxtrot about a year ago and they totally blew my mind...They`ve been showing up randomly in my life cause I saw them a few months after that open for Sloan and then again recently at the Alex P .....I had a chance to preview the new album that comes out on Oct. 16, and so far it sounds awesome. Way better sound quality then their last record...you can tell they [...]

Wow. I've been enjoying the new Spiral Beach record - Ball - for the better part of three days non-stop. It's one of those records that shocks you, and makes you think about your wasted your youth. All that potential that once bubbled over, and ideas that you knew you'd finish are now just distant memories as you settle into your mindless job. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just bands like Spiral Beach that make you ask those "what if" questions. I know in high school I wasn't dreaming of [...]

So what did you do this weekend? I spent Saturday afternoon basking/cooking in the sun and taking in the tunes on an island in the mouth of the St Lawrence River at the ninth annual Wolfe Island Musicfest . Set in the outfield of a baseball diamond in the tiny town of Marysville on the largest of the 1,000 Islands in Kingston, Ontario, it's a small festival that's grown larger in recent years as its reputation for hosting top independent Canadian talent in an exceedingly comfortable and casual setting has spread. This year there were more [...]

photo courtesy of Jalapeño taken at the Bowery Ballroom, NY, 15 November 2006 I know I'm running a bit behind, but it is the summer and I am feeling strangely compelled *not* to spend my weekends in front of the computer. And, looking ahead to getting outside for another weekend of awesomeness, here is my second post on bands playing the Wolfe Island Music Fest , happening on August 10-11. Spiral Beach wowed me when I saw them at the Winter City Festival in [...]
One good thing about living in London Ontario is that you drive 2 hrs east and your in Toronto . Drive 2 hrs West and your in Detroit . So I found out that Sloan is playing St.Andrew`s hall this Saturday, and I really wanna go...and the postitives are out weighing the negatives at this point..Sure I`ll be paying around $18 bucks for a ticket plus gas...but on the other hand I get to see my favorite band play at one of my favorite venues. Oh and did I mention Spiral [...]
