Welcome to the annual "Top Albums of the Year" list. As I expected, 2009 was an amazing year for music. Putting together this list was much harder than I anticipated. There were so many quality albums that did not make the cut and I'm sure I'll kick myself two months from now for leaving something [...]
Spiral Stairs - "True Love" from the album, "The Real Feel."
(photo: Peter Ellenby) I need to relax. I'm the kind of person who craves a certain level of control and consistency in my life, and when little things get thrown out of whack, or even minor plans have to shift mid-stream, it can cause me no end of distress. Major issues on the job? Not a problem. Medical emergencies of the highest priority? All in good time. Miss a blog post deadline, though, and I'll obsess about it for days. That's why I'm sitting here with the pressure of a deadline breathing down my [...]

Go back to those gold soundz....

Up until now, Pavement has taken great pains to make sure fans understand that their reunion tour is a one-shot deal. Their label, Matador, even warned us that "this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion." And that was fine, man. We just wanted to see the guys play once, anyway. We knew not to expect miracles. But hey, sometimes we get what we didn't even ask for. In an interview with New Zealand newspaper The Age , Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg said that [...]
Most Likely To: lead to a spike in John Oates and Andrew Ridgeley jokes. I don’t know whether to feel a little bad for Scott Kannberg or just think he’s a lucky, lucky bastard. There’s no way he imagined that twenty years after he started calling himself Spiral Stairs, palling around with Stephen Malkmus, and hanging out in Gary Young’s basement recording studio that he’d get the call. You know: “Spiral. It’s me, Steve. We’re getting the band back together.” Like the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr., Pavement has agreed to [...]
As one of the main contributors to Pavement in the 90’s, then Preston School of Industry for the last decade, Scott Kannberg is now the man and main contributor behind Spiral Stairs . This album still features the members of Preston but the sound here is very much his own as opposed to the bands’. This is a man at ease with himself and there is less wallowing in the jingle-jangle guitars and indie upbeat to this first ‘solo’ album, more the singer-songwriter with a purpose. Jangling guitars still introduce the album on ‘True Love’, [...]
More bands that Pavement likes (for All Tomorrow's 2010, curated by Pavement ): Broken Social Scene, Calexico, The Fiery Furnaces, The Walkmen, Mission of Burma, The Raincoats, Atlas Sound, Blitzen Trapper, Spiral Stairs (who is also in Pavement), Grails, Wooden Shjips, and The Clean among others. They join the some other bands that Pavement likes: Enablers, Endless Boogie, The Fall, Faust, and Quasi. Find all Pavement's favorites here . Then, head here to buy tickets where you'll be greeted with lots of "sold out"'s.
The Whore Moans go Acoustic at Bumbershoot 2009 ::: Photo by Abbey Simmons Mt. Fuji Records is home to a number of our absolute favorite local bands so it's with much excitement that I have a reason to reiterate that fact. Next Friday and Saturday Mt Fuji is packing their bands and a few friends into [...]
Scott Spiral , best known for his membership in Pavement , returns to the land of recorded material with The Real Feel , under the name Spiral Stairs . There are many artists who write about what they know, and incorporate such knowledge into their work. The Real Feel is all about pain, disappointment, and lost love. Spiral’s divorce contributed to the bleak material, and the album is indeed a bitter one. However, the variety of musical arrangements should prevent its listeners from jumping off a nearby [...]
The story of a musician/caterer who just can't take it anymore.

All right, guys. I know what my headline says. But just chill for a sec, because this news - while awesome - is not quite as epic as we may have hoped. Here's the deal: In an interview with NME , Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg has revealed that Pavement is planning to put out some previously unreleased material. The new album would combine outtakes and radio sessions with "greatest hits" and would likely see release right in time for the band's reunion performances. Says Kannberg: "The very first radio show that Pavement ever [...]

Much of the hype surrounding Spiral Stairs' debut album , The Real Feel , has been overshadowed by Pavement's forthcoming album, and deservedly so. But when the Pavement guitarist, who we recently interviewed by the way! , takes such actions such as releasing a brand new music video for the song "Cold Change", he reminds us, at least for a few minutes, that his LP is certainly worth the listen. According to Spinner , which had the honors of debuting the video, "Cold Change" was directed by Jess Carfield and filmed by [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive After being a founding member of Pavement and formerly fronting Preston School of Industry, Scott Kannberg is returning under the pseudonym Spiral Stairs with his first solo album, 'The Real Feel.' Just released on Oct. 20, the record is now accompanied with a brand-new video for its first single, 'Cold Change.' The album is a long time coming, with Kannberg having shaped it from his life since 2004's 'Monsoon,' his last release with Preston School. Kannberg worked on [...]

Here are some very good songs from albums I've recently given so-so reviews on Pitchfork. Please click through for the full reviews. Spiral Stairs - "True Love" Kannberg's new music mostly takes its cues from Neil Young and mid-period Bob Dylan, and to a certain extent, the ragged yet expansive sound suits his strengths as a guitarist and his weaknesses as an often aggravatingly nasal vocalist. "True Love", the album opener, is confident and sharp despite feeling more than a bit generic, and tracks like "Maltese T" and "Cold Change" are [...]

Between a tour of Australia , playing curators at All Tomorrow's Parties , headlining Primavera Sound , and a four-night stint in New York City , Pavement 's 2010 reunion is already on the realm of being an extravaganza. But as Consequence of Sound can exclusively reveal, fans of Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Scott Kannberg, Steve West, and Mark Ibold haven't seen anything yet. For the legendary outfit, which will be reuniting some 10 years after that final 1999 performance at London's Brixton Academy, 2010 will include dates across the [...]
