Let me be honest: I’ve known of the existence of both Husker Dϋ and Pavement for about as long as I’ve known what music was, but I’ve never really explored what either band sounded like. They’re both obvious icons of the indie-rock world, and for that I’ve always held respect for them, but have just never really took the time to listen to their music. Then I discovered Scott Kannberg—former guitarist for Pavement—and his newest project, Spiral Stairs . I was absolutely blown away, and even more so when I found out they’d be playing [...]

This is the second time I'm doing this kind of shorties post, and it may show that I'm better than I thought on consistency... During a week, I post a lot of news and finds on my twitter @eardrums and I get a lot of email that never gets published on the blog. I'll try to post some of it here + give you some recommendations to new releases you should buy. Let's start with some "VERY SHORTIES" and below this, you will find a lot of free goodies and music recommendations: [...]

Treasure Island Music Festival, what you missed and why you'll make the trip next year - Another take on DAY 1 as well as DAY 2 by GSL's Tatyahna Cameron.
In my honest opinion, Treasure Island Music Festival is the best music festival I have ever attended. The line-up this year was filled with the best of who’s-who in the indie music world without it compromising reputation by booking a radio-friendly act in order to boost ticket sales. Besides, both dates were sold out and for good reason. So let’s go over Day One first; first off, not the best day. Not a bad day by any means though. Bay Area’s own The Limousines kicked off the festival at a perfectly upbeat and energetic [...]
Following two releases as Preston School Of Industry, Spiral Stairs (Scott Kannberg to his mum) releases his first album under that particular moniker, but it’s certainly not a solo album in the traditional sense. Indeed, the former Pavement stalwart roped in a motley collection of alt-rock luminaries, including former Preston School of Industry graduates, various members of The Posies (whose John Auer also mixed it) and Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew. Unlike many such all-hands-on-deck collections, however, the result is amongst the most coherent pieces of work Stairs has ever given us, even if it does recall the [...]
Lots to talk about this week as a few artists go solo, a few stay solo and the rest simply made a new album. Let's dig in, shall we? First and most importantly this week Maps ... Poor Spiral Stairs . The timing couldn't have been worse, really. After laying low for five years, Scott Kannberg chooses now of all times to return with a new album (this time the project falls under the Spiral Stairs moniker and not Preston School of Industry) only to then overshadow himself by announcing a Pavement reunion a month before its release (and nearly a year in advance of the actual reunion!). Couldn't he have waited a few months, let The Real Feel gain some traction and not quiver in defeat within the [...]

Pavement co-founder Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg released a couple of impressive albums earlier this decade as Preston School of Industry. He reverts to his '90s moniker for the release Tuesday of "The Real Feel," which the Seattle-based guitarist made with assists from Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) and Jon Auer (the Posies), among others. It's introspective, '70s-feeling guitar rock with bite, not exactly the "brooding, depressing" music Kannberg has made it out to be, but still heavy enough that you know it's a breakup (actually, in his case, divorce) album. ||| Download: "Maltese [...]

Yes, Pavement is doing the reunion dance. But don't let that overshadow the release of Spiral Stairs' first proper solo album.

Snow Patrol plays the Wiltern in advance of the Nov. 10 release of their best of compilation “Up to Now” and the Nov. 3 release of their (wait for it) DJ mix CD, “Late Night Tales”. There are several new recordings between these two releases, which means there may just be a few surprises tonight. … Until the Pavement reunion kicks off next year, satiate your addiction with guitarist Scott Kannberg’s solo project Spiral Stairs (his moniker on the early Pavement records), playing with Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman/guitarist Bob Mould tonight at the Troubadour. for some reason i still havent listened to spiral stairs' upcoming matador release, the real feel . i've had it for a couple weeks now, but ever since the pavement re-union announcement i havent felt the need to check it out. you can stream it down there and pre-order it here . that stream is gonna automatically start, btw. i tried to look at the code to see if i could disable it, but fell short of attaining that goal. so, just hit pause if it annoys ya.
