Green suits you so well, that's what I'm tempted to say to you Mr [...]

Tonights post is the second of the Devil's two part predictions of the bands and artists who will breakthrough in 2010. In no particular order the Devil's second set of tips for 2010 are... Spirit Spine From: Bloomington, Indiana, United States Blissed out looped and layered experimental post-pop from the one [...]

After a productive 2k9-creating an LP on Neon Aztec and self-releasing an EP -Joseph Denny's brainchild, Spirit Spine , has already started to show signs of life in the new decade. In our first (and only ever) interview , Denny discussed his fond cuddling towards tropicalia toned tunes. Hence the title of his upcoming album, Jungle Bridges . At 11 tracks circling around 36 minutes, he has mentioned his focus on shorter songs. Though not as lengthy, there are no cliffhangers here. There certainly isn't a migration towards a new direction here, just signs of maturity. [...]

Well, I am giving the Candy Claws record some seeing to. It is never out of my ears and even when it is it floats prominently in my consciousness. It's a bit overwhelming this love we share so every now and then I stick on some 'Person Pitch' or other like-minded purveyor of intricate melodic electronica to just give ourselves a little space. Today, that soul belongs to Indiana's Joseph Denny (he of the ghostly back) who ploughs through the books at college while simultaneously summoning a tad more creativity from his computer. 'Crashers (Highs and Lows)' is [...]
As decade-end lists start to pinpoint Panda Bear as one of the pivotal artists of the 2000s (ours will be out later this week, by the way), it'll soon become apparent just how influential Person Pitch (and not to mention his work with Animal Collective) has been and will continue to be. Even now we don't need to look too deep to count the influenced so far (El Guincho, Dogbite, Happy Family, Atlas Sound, even Animal Collective). Some are not so obvious (we wouldn't have known about Atlas Sound if Bradford Cox hadn't [...]

A few weeks ago we spoke to Spirit Spine's Joseph Denney ( our first interview! ) and discussed what to expect for the future. What Denney had envisioned was taking the listener through a surf safari through New York City at night. I had my ideas of what he was talking about, but his latest ep, Surfhunter , has cleared up all questions. Musically, Spirit Spine has already vastly expanded and serves up even more dense and progressive tunes for your pallette. Not only is his latest ep free, but he has a remix contest with...prizes! He [...]

We had the pleasure of conducting our VERY FIRST INTERVIEW with Joseph Denney of the great Spirit Spine (ironically, it was his first as well) this last Monday. Mr. Denney talks about his latest album, random band name generators, and the future. The audio, well decided to scratch that idea. But ere it is (finally...), the first ever WTD Interview. WTD: I know you haven't had any interviews in the past, basically this will be both of our first interviews. Joseph Denney: Yeah, it's very special. WTD: Let's get a little [...]

The weekend! Finally!, and here's another mixtape to kick things off. I'll actually be making the long drive home this weekend, Mothers Day. Don't be an ass, send your mom a card, get her a mani/pedi, burn this mixtape for her! New tunes from Dinosaur Jr., Wavves, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Dinosaur Jr. - I Want You to Know That Ghost - Never Have Fun Micachu and the Shapes - Calculator Silent Talk - My Risionare [...]
Spirit Spine - So Cool Loving the more overt beats and concise pop edge that Indiana's Spirit Spine applies to the Panda Bear template. This guy's lo-fi certainly adheres to it, sometimes more audibly than others, but that's nothing too 'out there'; it's right at the surface. He's got a mixed bag of jewels that feels different each time, a real interesting and vaguely explorative pop. I would've thought there'd be more sounds like this happening really, but perhaps given the monolithic nature of the tome that is Person Pitch . Spirit Spine makes [...]

Since my new found love with Spirit Spine (I'll get back to this later), I've been getting into, pretty much, all of the artists on the Neon Aztec record label. Via the NA myspace (and my buddy Jordan) I came across a nostalgic "ghost pop" gem in Silent Talk . Straight outta Highland Park (CA, not the Dallas version), this duo's sound hints at a 70's sound similar to many of the artists under the Italians Do It Better label. My favorite tune of theirs, "My Risionare", makes me feel like I'm riding [...]

Neon Aztec have sent us the sonic equivalent of a glorious snow storm that doesn't leave a collapsed transport system on its wake, you can ride a makeshift sledge down the pretty & pristine hills of this wonderful music with a childish smile of joy, press play again when you ...

The future of the indie music world post- Person Pitch / Merriweather Post Pavilion ? We might just be seeing/hearing it in young (freshman at IU) Bloomington, Indiana-based Spirit Spine . At least Joseph Denney is being honest when he lists Panda Bear as an influence. Well, the work is so early it's hard to say where it will mature to, but it's definitely got potential and fans of those two albums might find something to love. Spirit [...]

We don't know a heck of a lot about this kid, other than that he comes from Indiana and calls himself Spirit Spine . But if you're like the rest of the internet and can't stop raving about Animal Collective's latest, you should probably check him out. Spirit Spine (Joseph Denny) lists as his influences a crazy wide spectrum of artists, from Animal Collective (we told you so!), Beck , The Cars and The Talking Heads to Kraftwerk and [...]
