Well, I hope you're all enjoying this three-day holiday weekend. I've been working. Indoors. So, to answer your question (which you have not asked), no I have not enjoyed my weekend. I'll even be working tomorrow! While everyone else is out at the beach, or barbecuing, or doing whatever it is that people do on [...]

I think my ears are still ringing. Last night at the Rickshaw Theatre, Spiritualized once again managed to overcome pretty high expectations. While the show didn't quite reach the heights of a show in Sydney I saw a few years ago , I was still impressed with Spiritualized's ability to unleash such transcendent music in a live setting. Joined on stage by four other musicians as well as two backup singers, Jason Pierce led the band through a pretty extensive tour through the Spiritualized catalogue (easy to do when you're on stage for [...]

Nikki Lane graced the stage at The Wiltern on Tuesday night while opening for headlining act Spiritualized. The match was complimentary. For one, like the bluesy and soulful veins that flow through Spiritualized, Nikki Lane too has an appreciation for classic, early rock and roll music, so early that it's more country and bluegrass influenced. The Nashville singer-songwriter, who had been performing solo for most of the tour, had pleasure of pedal steel and guitar accompaniment that night. In this time, of what feels like, Zooey Daschenel mania, how could Nikki Lane not translate to the masses? [...]

It was time to space out. Spiritualized touched down on the stage of The Wiltern Theatre with tunes from its latest Sweet Heart Sweet Light . Leader Jason Pierce/ J. Spaceman always styling in white, sunglasses and facing longtime guitarist John Coxon, guided the wave of sound and escape with minimal light projections and no conversation. This is about getting lost in the music. Nashville crooner Nikki Lane opened. "All I want in life's a little bit of love to take the pain away." "Save your little soul The [...]
While it is difficult to believe that Lazer Guided Melodies is nearly twenty years old, Spiritualized are still very much alive and kicking as they stopped by the Wiltern Theater in support of their latest excellent album Sweet Heart Sweet Light . The spine-tingling moment of the evening was their gorgeous rendition of "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space". Check out the pictures above and the setlist below. Read More...

Frank Yang NYC Popfest is wonderful for many reasons, not least of which is a built-in excuse to jet off to New York for the May long weekend. I did so back in 2009 when The Radio Dept. as headliners were enough to get me out to two nights , and while I was already planning on being in town this year regardless, the opportunity to see Allo Darlin' - who were skipping Toronto on their tour in support of Europe [...]
The first time I saw Spiritualized live, I was maybe 21, and I was absolutely determined that I would not experience them sober. They were playing in Rochester, about a 90-minute drive from where I was going to college in Syracuse, and I brought a gallon jug of Carlo Rossi merlot - absolutely disgusting shit - in the car with me. I spent the entire ride just obliterating myself. My friends Andy and Ashlea, who were driving, would have to tell me to put the thing on the floor when we pulled up to toll booths. By the time we [...]

Can you see where this is going? The last couple of posts in the 33 series have been more labour intensive than they might look, meaning I briefly had to use my brain. Now, I don't want to have to do that too often. It's a small small brain, it gets used up quite quickly, and I might need it at some point later. With that in mind while trying to think of what I wanted to do today I looked out the window, typed "sun" into search on my [...]

I'd been looking forward to seeing Spiritualized for awhile now, ever since the show popped up on the calendar. I knew it would be a packed house, and it was pretty full over at Emos, which always has an upside and a downside. You can read on for our thoughts on opener Nikki Lane and the headliner below....with the usual camera shots from Brian Gray. I've been pleasantly pleased with the work of opener Nikki Lane , but I [...]

The way a band walks on stage says a lot about the band themselves. Some make an event out of it, dimming the lights, playing intro music and the whole shebang. Others cut the lights, give the crowd a minute or so to warm up, and then come out to an already crazed audience. A few tease the fans by cutting the lights way too early, which leads to excitement then ambivalence from just about everyone. Then there are those that just walk on stage to little or no fanfare, and this is the category that Spiritualized falls [...]

Wile it may seem cliché, Spiritualized (@spiritualized) shows are truly spiritual experiences. Not only is the music steeped in that tradition, but for many, seeing J Spaceman on stage is cosmic in and of itself - it certainly was for the kid in the front row I saw sobbing. The members of Spiritualized aren't about showmanship: no banter, no dancing around, just music. Granted, the music is why people attend the concerts, and boy did the band deliver on those expectations. While the songs lasted upwards of ten [...]

Nik Vestberg There's many things I loved about Allo Darlin' 2010 self-titled debut . The jangly guitars, strummy ukulele, and ebullient melodies that put the London-based foresome at the forefront of current bands unashamed to call themselves indie pop - absolutely - but what I found set them apart and made them really special was the way they used those traits to deliver songs that evoked the wistfulness and insecurity of growing up and out and apart. Far too often pure pop music feels strictly a youth movement but here was [...]
