Hello there folks, and welcome back to the internet. I apologise for the lack of a Friday Fives post this week, but after the Sparrow and the Workshop album launch at the Caves on Thursday night I was pretty bloody hungover on Friday and never quite managed to look the internet in the eye all day. It was all shit TV and worse food before wandering into town to do it all again with eagleowl. This week is relatively quiet on the gig front, but there are one or two interesting things happening of which you may wish [...]

Well, I don't know how many of you were there, but didn't the Meursault Liquid Room show go well on Friday! The place was rammed, gin was consumed in some quantities and even the hangover the next day wasn't all that bad. The sun was out, and it's that glorious time in Edinburgh when the weather is starting to improve, the sun is out and the tourists haven't really turned up yet in any great numbers. Nothing against tourists, of course, just their absence does make the place rather pleasingly peaceful. There are some interesting things happening in [...]

Today we've got one of my favourite Scottish bands in the advent calendar, The Spook School! Considering that for a big chunk of the year half of the band have been off galavanting in foreign lands, they've been surprisingly busy. October saw the release of a 7" single , and they followed that up this month with a release on tape . Both are fab. Now, here's their Christmas song, Bah Humbug! You can name your price for a download here . Bah Humbug! by The Spook [...]

Would you care to introduce yourself? Hello! We’re The Spook School. There’s four of us (Adam & Nye Todd, Anna Cory and Niall McCamley) and we like being silly and making lots of noise. Niall also likes taking his clothes off and writing very sexually forward love letters to other bands. The rest of us are entirely powerless to prevent this from happening, sorry! How would you describe the music you make? Fast, [...]

The Spook School have just released their debut 5-track cassette EP I Don’t Know, You Don’t Know, We Don’t Know The Spook School , and we’re enjoying the hell out of it here at HCM headquarters. Sure, the songs are as twee and cutesy as can be, but the garage rock aesthetic is used genuinely, making everything way more authentic. We are truly believe that this young and innocent future couple, that are the subject of many of the tracks, truly are exhausting themselves and finding the perfect words to say. Did I mention HANDCLAPS all over opening track “I Don’t Know”, so [...]

A short while ago I raved about the new 73 from The Spook School, and they're wasting no time getting back at it again with this excellent new cassette EP on Soft Power Records/Vinyl . When the song opens it's just casual twee pop, which is all well and good, but when they blast off at the 20 second mark, you'll feel your heart jump for joy. It's a joyous jangling pop tune trading male and female vocal parts throughout the tune. If you're in search of some ramshackle [...]

The VPME We interrupt our "Tips or 20133 coverage to bring you news of three rather excellent new tunes! You Walk Through Walls 'Say Goodbye' is just one of a quintet of outstanding tunes from by You Walk Through Walls' forthcoming début EP. If driving chiming walls of guitar, yearning sweeping melodies reminiscent of early Ride are your thing, then You Walk Through Walks will certainly tick all your musical boxes. Full of subtle desolate beauty and understated drama, the "Destroyed [...]

So, after a couple of slightly misnumbered podcasts - 245 coming after 243, and then 244 having to come after that to try and correct the mistake, hoping two wrongs might , if not make a right exactly, at least gloss over the original wrong somewhat - we are back on track with #246. In the right order and everything. There's no real theme to this week's podcast, although we have a fair bit of new stuff in there - some by The Walkmen, The Douglas Firs, The Spook School, Monster Island and a couple of others. [...]

starkes neues lebenszeichen des duo christopher tignor und theo metz aus der south bronx, mit "replicant" werden sie im november ein neues album ihrer ausdrucksstarken instrumentalmusik vorlegen, auf western vinyl versteht sich: wires under tension : the light behind your light is changing by western.vinyl es sind zwar die unterschiedlichsten heimatorte angegeben, aber die truppe ist irgendwie dann doch aus italien, ihr neues album "you should [...]
Indiepop is not necessarily a genre I personally associate with Edinburgh all that much, despite the presence of the excellent Kid Canaveral and Morris Major in town, and despite the reputation that Scotland as a whole has for the stuff. But umm... well, what can you say, sometimes I develop these odd blind spots, I guess. The Spook School are one of the city's finest exponents of the genre however, and whilst I have taken my eye off them slightly in recent months, they've only gone and snagged a single release with a label I [...]

Let's be honest, I'm a sucker from good indie pop. While browsing through the immense catalogue of Cloudberry Records , I came across this offering from the label's The Spook School . It's not a surprise to me that the band is based in Edinburgh, but it surprises me that more people don't adamantly swoon over music like this. The song starts off with a bit of a jangling guitar, but as it moves along, there's more of a bright discordant guitar that jabs in and out. It doesn't hurt [...]

Once again I find myself listing a pile of gigs I can't possibly attend myself. And, frustratingly, there is a shitload of interesting stuff on this week. Specifically, the Gerry Loves split 73 launch on Thursday and the Tinderbox Orchestra stuff at the Queen's Hall on the weekend look bloody amazing. I'll still be charging about like a fanny though, and unable to get to any of this. Annoyingly. Ah well, you'll have a good week at least! There is also a slightly confusing one, in that on the Sneaky Pete's website [...]

Near the start of this self indulgent ramblefest that has been 33 I wrote about the Aye Tunes Vs Pennko gigs. Returning to that self indulgent theme, today I'm going to write a wee bit about the gigs I've put on by myself, which have imaginatively been titled Aye Tunes Presents. I'd have shortened that to ATP, but I'm pretty sure there'd be objections to that. #1 - 21st January 2011, Stereo Goodness, that feels so long again. I suppose it is quite a while ago, nearly a year and a [...]

GS-33 Plug Adapters. Don't you dare say I don't put any effort into these. Having a wee change of pace today, and killing two birds with one stone. There's quite a lot of good things going on over the next few weeks, and good music out. Rather than revive news & bits, I'll shove a load of it in to this 33 post instead. Stop glaring at me like that. First of all there's GoNorth, taking place in Inverness over the next few days. I'm not going to that [...]

Kowalskiy The trouble with writing these Friday Freebies on a Thursday night is that quite often someone posts a cracking free download on the Friday and I don't have time to update the post. This happened last week when my fellow blogger, Kowalskiy posted up his latest free monthly EP, his latest offering was possibly his best to date (do I say that every month?) including tracks from Blue Sky Archives, This Silent Forest, The Sea Kings, The Spook School and my current favourite thing ever - Behold, the Old Bear (who are also coincidentally playing [...]

After 8 years of madness, Glasgow's longest running 'indie, punk, soul & electropop' night, Pinup Nights have decided call it a day, but the gang have decided to go out in style. For their last ever night, "Game Over", they've got one of the most stellar line ups that the Flying Duck will ever have witness which will include live performances by Sonny Marvello, Miaoux Miaoux, Malcolm Middleton (acoustic); Emma Pollock (acoustic) and The Twilight Sad (acoustic), plus as if that wasn't enough there will of course there will be the classic Pin Ups disco action through until the [...]
