White Rabbits seem to perpetually find themselves opening for other bands because their music is malleable. You can dance to it, really listen to the lyrics, or, sometimes, forget it entirely, and all of these things are true of their third album, "Milk Famous." For the indie-pop inclined, "Milk Famous" succeeds on many levels. The album offers exactly what is expected of accessibly upbeat music by way of crisply recorded songs about vaguely beautiful imagery and possibly complicated relationships. It never comes in with too much baggage and is light [...]
The headline should more appropriately read "plays along with" and I'm fairly convinced this will be the most ridiculous thing you watch today. This is even more absurd than the official video . [via tastefullyoffensive ]
Each month the Amazon MP3 Store will put 100 albums on sale for $5 a piece for the entire month. Amazingly each month there are tons of great albums to choose from, from both mainstream artists and lesser known indie groups. There's a lot of great deals each month and for most people it's hard to know which albums to go with. So I have decided to give you my top 5 choices out of the bunch each month. (I decided to disqualify Greatest Hits albums from making the list.) I obviously haven't heard every single album on sale here, [...]

Oh, the 80s. So much to answer for. So much celebrate, too. I'm just days away from starting my fortieth year, so forgive me the nostalgic mood, but there's another anniversary near and dear to my heart that that's recently come up: the 30th anniversary of "Nova Heart", the quintessential Canadian new wave single from Canada's quintessential new wave band, Spoons . The current line-up, featuring original members Gordon Deppe and Sandy Horne along with Casey MQ (on keyboards) and Chris McNeill (on drums), marked the milestone with a special anniversary show at [...]

I bought my first turntable back in 2007. Everybody thought I was completely insane for getting back into a "dead format." That summer I went from garage sale to garage sale looking for bargains on old records. I collected tons of The Who , Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd , The Eagles, and damn near every Rush record. It was a feeling long forgotten to delicately put a record on the turntable, select the speed, drop the needle, and then repeat in 20 minutes. I grew up with classic rock, so the collection I had [...]

Another variety show, no particular theme. It was set to be a sunny weekend, and that meant hitting the road. After a late Friday night at the station, I woke up early, grabbed my bike and went on a solid 10 mile ride. It was the first of the sort for 2012; the first of many. I need to get in shape for the 200 mile Seattle to Portland ride in July. Just about half way, I paused to snap the shot above. The Skagit Valley is known [...]
MP3: Eric Harvey - Year of the Rat Spoon keyboardist Eric Harvey just released his new album Lake Disappointment on his bandcamp page. He's being exceedingly generous with it as well, giving it away at a name-your-price price point. If you've got a little extra coin in your pocket, this is worth at least the [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris At our most vulnerable moments, we might come face-to-face with death and the very nature of our mortal existence. Here we will examine that bareness via the pop song, which as a vessel has carried many horribly dark tales of dealing with our flawed lifespan for decades. [...]
Spoon's Bonus Track Archive I seem to get a lot of requests for the order of these songs that Spoon has so kindly shared (nearly one month at a time) since 2008. Not a lot of fans of other bands are treated this well. I keep saying I should get all of these links back up and living... maybe I'll get around to doing that soon. Until then, most of the newer links are still up. I'll keep this page as a [...]

It seems like everyone has a kind word for Spoon. And why not? They've made skeletal pop melodic and still mainstream for a good run of albums now. Sometimes, they out-clever themselves, but usually they're inspiringly rigorous about pruning. This one is mysterious and still a bit warm. And it's got count-it-off clacking sticks as the main drumbeat! My cap is tipped. Spoon - Paper Tiger

Not sure what things are like in your neck of the woods, but we had temps in the high 70s today. Alas, the beautiful weather kept us away and we apologize for that. So we offer a recommendation, Spoon live at Austin City Limits Festival circa 2004 : Check out: Spoon - Jonathon Fisk Spoon - My Mathematical Mind and bid you good night... check us out tomorrow. Unfortunately for all of us who have fallen in love with Chuck , we now grieve in the wake of the show's grand finale. But let's take some time to happily reminisce, and remember how he captured all of our hearts in the first place. NBC's Chuck is one of the few comedy-action-drama spy shows that will forever take your breath away, either by laughing too hard or the show's constant twists, turns, and cliffhangers. It followed the life of Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), a "nerd-herd" computer whiz recruited by the CIA and NSA after all of [...]

With the weekend's Super Bowl now over, what better way to celebrate the season than with a playlist from a show not only about football, but with one of the greatest indie soundtracks to go with it. NBC's Friday Night Lights is a show about a small, western Texas town, where every Friday night during the football season the town shuts down to cheer on the Dylan Panthers football team. With the bright lights of the football stadium, it's easy for the various characters to get lost in themselves as they deal with handling pressure, serious injury, drug [...]

This is a very quiet time of the year when it comes to new music. Most major bands don't start releasing material until February or March, so January can be seen as a reflective time. 20112s Top 50 list took me quite a while to finish, but I must say that I'm pretty happy with it overall. Now I find myself wondering what I should be looking forward to in 2012. If the Mayans are to be believed, the world shall be ending sometime in late December. This only leaves 11 more months of new music until mankind is lost [...]

Mixtape: Twenty Years of Noise Pop (Podcast #269) In February, the Noise Pop Music Festival turns twenty by gathering over one hundred local and touring bands from across the indie spectrum for a week of exciting concerts all over the City. Two decades of championing independent music is an accomplishment worth celebrating, and this mixtape collects twenty bands that have performed at Noise Pop events in years past. As you'll hear, a whole bunch of big names graced Noise Pop bills before achieving fame, as past festivals [...]
