If you can manage a spare second away from Daft Punk today, I highly recommend giving IS TROPICAL 's latest release I'm Leaving and especially the airy track " Sun Sun ". The track is a frolicy, breezy tune that will delight the ears of fans of lighthearted indie-rock. Lead singer Simon Milner 's raspy, sage vocals are reminiscent of Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel's. In fact, this whole song sounds like it's from the same recipe book of Spoon's classic "The Underdog". " Sun Sun [...]

Robert Semmer On the list of ideal days on which to announce a tour itinerary, there's not many occasions better than the day the album you're actually going to promote goes on sale. And so yesterday, with the official release of their latest full-length Monomania , Atlanta's Deerhunter have announced the itinerary for their Fall tour behind it. It's an outing that brings them to The Phoenix in Toronto on September 12, and that leg of the tour also includes support from Marnie Stern , who herself released [...]
Sexy, as you-know-what.. Nanaimo’s HipNeck gets all funky & tender with his marvellous “Bus Stop DJ Mix” (that features an impressive Groove Armada remix from The Twelves) and a reggae-tinged showcase throughout his downtempo “Dracula Mix.” “HipNeck’s Best of 2012” remains undated, punchy and original, whilst his fusion of Kylie Minogue & Lifelike - and his remixes of The Dirty Tees, Spoon and New Young Pony Club - are as succulent as a freshly cut grapefruit served up during a blue sky morning. All other tracklistings can be found by clicking the [...]

Spoon , one of the most consistent band in American rock music, are back at it. In a newsletter they shared that they've been writing new material at drummer and producer Jim Eno's place. They're in the writing phases still but claim that "the shit is sounding good.” So far they got eight new song names: "The Rent I Pay", "Naff Bag", "Millionaires", "Let Me Be Mine", "Modern Girls", "I Ain't the One", "Fresh From Your Pages", and "Give Me It". They also have a newly created instagram account , which features photos of them at Eno's [...]

photo by Victoria Holt Tycho , aka designer Scott Hansen , has an enthralling in new video for "Ascension" off his album Dive . The video is very similar to the visuals behind his show during 20122s Decibel Festival - kaleidoscopic, colorful, psychedelic, clearly created with design, not just music, in mind. This video features a silhouetted woman wandering through a desert of rippling colors and a magnificent ruby red sun. [ Pitchfork ] [...]
For the past couple of months I've been on a serious war path, following any and all productions that young UK upstart MNEK has put out. This guy is as talented at producing as he is as a vocalist, but when he links up with Rudimental - it's on a whole 'nother level! Their last collaboration ' Spoons ' with Syron is STILL in heavy rotation on the iPod. Today we get a preview of Rudimental's latest song ' Baby ' featuring MNEK [...]

Britt Daniel is a busy man. When he's not fronting Spoon or playing in Divine Fits, he is also keeping busy with yet another band: Split Single . The band is a trio that includes Daniel (on bass), along with Jason Narducy (guitar, he's in Bob Mould's band) and Jon Wurster (who drums in the Mountain Goats). Their motto is "three guys, one mic. Jist like Elvis and Yes recorded." Split Single have kicked things off by releasing a few singles, as ever appropriate as that is. The songs are titled "Fragmented World", "Waiting for the Sun", [...]

Shawn Brackbill You have to wonder in Kurt Vile ever regrets leaving The War On Drugs after touring their 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues , considering the level of success the Philadelphia outfit would achieve with their second album, Slave Ambient . Or maybe not. Given that Vile's laid back, groovingly psychedelic guitar-rock travels a fairly parallel path to what Adam Granduciel is doing with The War On Drugs, their fanbases probably overlap pretty significantly and Vile's own 2011 effort, Smoke Ring [...]

Divine Fits transcended supergroup status almost as soon as they formed. Chalk it up to releasing one of the best albums of last year and slowly building a killer live show. After last month's victory run through Austin's SXSW, the quartet is hitting the road once more , despite some of the band members being busy with their own non-side projects. For this new leg, fans can expect to hear tracks from A Thing Called Divine Fits , a handful of covers, and even some new cuts, which the Fits hope to release soon. [...]
Emerging inauspiciously in 1993 with a raw, post-Pixies sound before plotting one of the most distinctively creative courses in indie rock, Spoon has made a career of ignoring rules and trends, amassing a relatively dud-free discography in the process. Watching Spoon beat the odds has been a little like witnessing a child actor - precocious, sassy, ultimately disposable - transcend growing pains and emerge as a first class thespian of repute. The Zolas - Escape Artist from Light Organ Records on Vimeo . Last year the Zolas gave the world the Spoon record that Spoon didn't write. While it isn't a direct analog, the Zolas sophomore record, Ancient Mars was full of lively piano arrangements and probing hooks. On "Escape Artist", ostensibly the second single behind the sublime, "Knot In My Heart" , the band crafts a lyrical meditation on anxiety, avoidance and self-destructive modalities. The video, a beautiful urban tableau, [...]

Hey, uh, Britt? Are you going to eat that maraschino cherry? 'Cause if not . . . I think pretty much everything Britt Daniel touches is gold. (I mean that in the "quality" sense, not necessarily "gold record" sense, although I haven't checked, so maybe Spoon's recent records really have gone gold.) In any case, I'll confess, I'm biased. So I had a feeling his new band project, Divine Fits (also featuring members of the New Bomb Turks and Wolf Parade), would be very not uncool. And sure enough, their album A Thing [...]
