The fleeting guitar-pop of The Demos presents itself like a smörgåsbord of indie-rock influences. Pop pioneers like The Beatles and Brian Wilson can be heard in much of today's music, but the prevalence of contrived imitation over infused creativity now prevents listeners from fully grasping their impact on a variety of pop/rock styles. The Demos' [...]

At first glance, Britt Daniel's name may not ring a bell. But I bet the band he sings for does, so I'll give you a hint: it's something you eat soup with. That's right, he's the front-man of Spoon! Back in early 2008 he released this gem of a [...]

Spoon : Tear Me Down [ purchase ] Bonnie Pink : The Origin of Love [ purchase ] Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a glam-rock musical written by (and for) former Army brat John Cameron Mitchell. It premiered off-Broadway in 1998. The plot sounds farfetched and convoluted in description (gay man meets Army officer in East Berlin and undergoes a botched sex change to escape Communist rule, ending as a failed rock [...]

After stumbling upon a Mother's Day tribute post earlier today that featured an unsurprisingly great take on a Paul Simon tune by cover song pros The Morning Benders, it occurred to me that Simon's oeuvre — a staple of my, and perhaps their, father's record collection — has become a notable point of reference for a number of indie bands and solo artists of late. In the past couple years, The Tallest Man on Earth , Local Natives, Jens Lekman, Conor Oberst, Ezra Koenig, Spoon, and others have turned in reverent renditions of songs penned by [...]

A first impression is a lasting impression. At least that is the conventional wisdom. And I'd argue that whatever wisdom lay in that theory with regard to social interactions applies equally to a listener's interaction with music. If you have a negative reaction (i.e. boredom, indifference, or outright dislike) to the first song you hear by a band, it can be very difficult to overcome that first impression. And although people are listening to music as "albums" less and less frequently, an album's opening track is nonetheless often a band's first opportunity to connect with a listener. Additionally, opening tracks [...]
If you were aware of Canadian music at all during the '80s then you would be more than familiar with The Spoons. The band are back with a new album Static Transmission. They've got a new video as well. Check out "You Light Up": The Spoons' website

As Beatles fans, we had always been more "Paul" people than "John" people. Reason aside, it took us a lot longer to get into Lennon 's solo catalog, despite its massive street cred. Case in point "Isolation". In fact, the track didn't even come to us from Lennon. We first heard the tune when we caught Spoon opening for Crooked Fingers at Boston's Middle East. The cover was a simple one, and true to the original, with only a piano for accompaniment. Still, unfamiliar with Plastic Ono [...]
So it wasn't a rumor or a delusion, after all: Mariah Carey was really pregnant with real fetuses, experiencing the real ups, downs, and all-around of being with child. And Saturday, she really did b

The Heavenly States' excellent new EP, Oui Camera Oui , received a bit of a boost when Spoon frontman Britt Daniel agreed to contribute vocals to the track "Berlin Wall." Daniel, a champion of the Bay area band, previously had the Heavenly States open for Spoon during a three-night stint at the Fillmore and proclaimed their 2010 LP Delayer one of his favorite records of the year. After the jump, check out Kristoffer West Johnson's animated video for "Berlin Wall"—which stars an egg-shaped Humpty Dumpty-looking character with Daniel's voice. You can also nab the [...]
