Spotlight Kid take from one of the best shoegaze acts that ever was (we’re talking Swervedriver) which makes what they do all the more palatable because without that it could be a mere token reprisal rather a voyage into new territory. The similarities are most prevalent in the guitars which are tuned to within an inch of Adam Franklin’s seminal guitar noise. But SK’s frantic scuzz does have a life of its own, there are living breathing personalities present meaning there is much to admire for those familiar with shoegaze part 1 and those who are not. The band have [...]

There are some songs that, when listening to them, the words or music (and sometimes both) give you a feeling like everything has been suspended in time, at least for the duration of that track. Here is a sampling of some sounds that will hopefully give you this very feeling: Spotlight Kid – Budge Up Sea Dweller – Flashes [...]

'Budge Up' is the first track to see the light of day from the forthcoming album from the Nottingham shoegazers produced in collaboration with Todd Howe from the Boxer Rebellion - cinematic epic dream pop. Including three remixes from the Fad Gadget meets Death In Vegas influenced Deep Cut mix through to the futuristic house of Analogue of the Wolf to the Krautrock, psych noise fusion of King Plague. Filed under: Video of the Day Artist : Spotlight Kid Video: "Creeps" Highlight: "'Creeps' warps and folds like M83 landing on the moon with Neu playing in the background," vocalist and guitarist Chris Davis tells Spinner. "It was a late addition to the album but added a necessary different dimension. It's chiming guitars and slower pace helped to break up the relentless sonic assault. "The video is directed by longtime collaborator Martin Shearman Brettle, who used footage [...]

Captain Beefheart :Click Clack [Purchase] In the March 20, 1972 issue of Rolling Stone , legendary music critic Lester Bangs gave the new Captain Beefheart album, The Spotlight Kid , a rave review. Bangs said Beefheart had finally found that sweet spot where great artistry and mass appeal intersected. He has been called everything in the past from a man wasting the clear ability to be the world's greatest white blues singer, to an impossibly complex musician who may or [...]

When Spotlight Kid released their debut, 'Departure', Tony Blair was grinning his way through a third term at the helm of pre-recession Britain, and Steve McLaren had recently succeeded Sven to begin a disastrous tenure at the helm of the soon to become shambolic England football team. Despite punctuating their lengthy hibernation with a couple of singles, it's fair to say that they've been a little sluggish in producing a follow up album, and in that time many things have changed; Spotlight Kid's sound, though, has remained pretty much as it was. The only noticeable differences are that [...]

Nottingham six-piece Spotlight Kid follow up their 2006 LP ‘Departure’ and 2010 EP ‘Crystal Dreams’ with ‘Disaster Tourist’, an 11-track record that throws the listener back to early-90s shoegaze. Chris Davis, of Six By Seven drummer fame, joins former Bent vocalist Katty Heath in delivering a record that does the musical equivalent of wrapping its arms around your body and giving you a nice, warm hug. Rather like that Batchelors Cup-A-Soup advert, minus the shaggy blue fur. And the soup, of course. Which is strange thing to say when you dismantle the elements of shoegaze, the most [...]

Considering it's rich history and iconic heritage, it fills me with great pride to see my homeland's music scene thriving. Spanning the UK's many aural genres, there's a myriad of music to suit all tastes and dispositions. It's been a challenge to cull this list down to just ten artists, but those who are listed here have earned my vote as the top bands in Britain today. Coming straight from Tyneside, this eclectic act blends elements of electronica and krautrock, resulting in locomotive-like grooves, [...]
