When Spotlight Kid released their debut, 'Departure', Tony Blair was grinning his way through a third term at the helm of pre-recession Britain, and Steve McLaren had recently succeeded Sven to begin a disastrous tenure at the helm of the soon to become shambolic England football team. Despite punctuating their lengthy hibernation with a couple of singles, it's fair to say that they've been a little sluggish in producing a follow up album, and in that time many things have changed; Spotlight Kid's sound, though, has remained pretty much as it was. The only noticeable differences are that [...]

Considering it's rich history and iconic heritage, it fills me with great pride to see my homeland's music scene thriving. Spanning the UK's many aural genres, there's a myriad of music to suit all tastes and dispositions. It's been a challenge to cull this list down to just ten artists, but those who are listed here have earned my vote as the top bands in Britain today. Coming straight from Tyneside, this eclectic act blends elements of electronica and krautrock, resulting in locomotive-like grooves, [...]

Facebook / spotlightkidsound.co.uk/ I've flirted with Spotlight Kid for a while before I finally caught up with them with two gigs in July / August, I was left suitably impressed by the dynamic sound of the Nottingham six-piece. Shimmering guitars, beautiful boy/girl harmonies, a perfect combination of shoegaze noise and melody. I've labelled this as an "Introducing" post but Spotlight Kid aren't a band that will need introducing to everyone, they released an album 'Departure' in 2006 and after a hiatus followed it with releases in 2009 and 2010. Forward [...]

It's less than a week until Glastonbury 2011 , like everyone else who writes a blog and is going to Somerset next week, here's a list of ten bands I think you should see... I'm not going to give a survival tips post, basically ignore everything it says in this Telegraph article and you'll do alright. Fingers crossed that this weather forecast is accurate too, after the horrendous weather of the past week I'll certainly take it. Saying that, here are a few of my places to go tips. Firstly, the Crows Nest [...]

Haunting Me April Spotlight Kid come out of Nottingham with their blast of shoegaze pop that hits you with the wall of sound and melody that takes you back to the days of Ride, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine. Their debut album, Departure , came out in 2006 from Club AC30 Records and started the KEEP READING »

Spotlight Kid's music requires no real introduction - their pulsating shoegaze pop demands your attention from the outset, forcing upon you something with immense and raw sonic force, shades of ideological extremism amongst a deep conceptual 90s ideology which seems impossible to quite grasp in its full form. Technically, one could infer influence extracted from the surging electro-rock power of TV On The Radio, the ethereal harmonies of M83 and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, whispered in desperation, or even the guiding conceptual light of shoegaze's two decade old pioneers, that of My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Slowdive as [...]

This weeks rounds up of the tracks that I haven't go round to posting include some crackers to decorate your ears with. It's like your own personal John Peel show. We're doing the whole music festival thing on the cheap this year. Well, on a smaller scale at least, travelling only to Leicester and the Summer Sundae Weekender in the grounds of De Montfort Hall. A festival that is now in its tenth year and if, like us, you're used to huge festivals like Leeds this one is much cosier. You can walk around the entire site and all five stages in around ten minutes. They even sell proper beer. We're so hip we're even here for the whole weekend and we have the wristbands to prove it. [...]
It honestly came as a complete surprise when we found our blog listed on several other websites as being shoegaze-related. Don't get me wrong, it is very much appreciated. It just got us thinking that it might be a good idea to go back and sort through our posts and figure out how we earned this particular distinction. After spending some time listening and falling in love all
