Earlier today I happened upon a half finished web page for something called Spring Awakening Music Festival. This supposed festival is slated to hit Soldier Field June 16th and 17th in Chicago. The half finished web page wasn't up for long, so I wasn't able to lurk the page for long, but on the page [...]

[image by Songbirdnest ] We've had a few productive months since the last update, so its time to take us through the Spring and into Summer. We are still experimenting with alternative download locations and hopefully this coming season will see no more downtime. [Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime.] If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you [...]

At it's best, Spring Awakening is a musical that guy like me can not only appreciate, but enjoy thoroughly. I'm not the type of person who will go out of his way to see a theatrical production, but impressive songs, stories and performances can turn my ordinarily black heart into something which slightly resembles a human heart. In 2009 Nicci brought me to Costa Mesa to see the national tour of Spring Awakening and I was very impressed [ review ]. Nicci and I decided that we'd make last night our official Valentine's Day celebration, so [...]
For my day job, I teach theater at a university in Pennsylvania. So, my ear is pretty tied to the ground on what's going on the Great White Way. From Green Day's American Idiot to Julie Taymor/Bono/The Edge's Spiderman: Turn off the Dark (hands down one of the WORST titles of all time) to Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening to the soon-to-be-closed Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson , the rock musical has become something of a staple onto the landscape and with news today that Colin Meloy of the Decemberists [...]
lauren pritchard - when the night kills the day [co-written by the amazing ed harcourt and produced by marcus mumford (mumford & sons!!), lauren pritchard is a tennessee born singer/songwriter/stage actress that is finally getting to showcase her strong vocals via her debut release the jackson sessions. as for those of you who are massive fans of the tony award winning musical spring awakening in which lauren had a major role (where you might also recognize some fellow alums in a show called glee), you are more than welcome to implode with delight about her career now.] [...]
MUSIC NEWS - The LATimes is reporting that singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik has signed up to score the upcoming musical adaptation of "American Psycho ". The musical will be based on the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel that focuses on a 1980s Wall Street banker who spends his evenings as a deranged serial killer. Back in 200, the novel was turned into a film that starred Christian Bale. Mr Sheik talked about his passion for the project in a statement about the novel, in which he said; "I came to feel that what some people (including [...]

More often than not, when Evan comes over to my house after work he'll sit on the couch and tinker with his laptop for at least an hour, and eventually mutter "what will I blog about today…" to which I respond "Me!" When he came over today, I asked what he was going to blog about, and he told me I was going to write the entry today. So either a) he's too hungover to make his brain function properly, or b) he's trying to shut me up - if I want to be written about so much, [...]

Though I am relatively new to the world of writing about musical theater, there are a few patterns I've noticed during the past year of previewing and reviewing shows whilst referencing names like Sondheim and Fosse with ever-increasing ease: First and foremost, when I get in touch with a show's PR team, they usually hook me up with one of the show's lead names. And when interviewing actors of such prominence, a certain degree of prudishness can be expected. When I previewed Legally Blonde , I interviewed Elle Woods, played by Becky Gulsvig, a very wholesome Minnesotan-at-heart [...]

Artist: Steven Sater (Book & Lyrics), Duncan Sheik (Music) Album: Spring Awakening Release Date: December 12, 2006 Once upon a time I had planned to do a week full of Broadway soundtracks. Then I remembered that I have very low tolerance for Broadway musicals and that by Wednesday of that hypothetical week I'd want to cut my ears off. So instead expect a smattering of musicals in the remaining weeks of the project. It's hard to quantify what it is that bothers me about musical [...]

I have been spending all of my time seeing musicals. I met Jonathan Groff tonight and I am beyond pleased. Melchior in the original cast of Spring Awakening? Yes please. Hair at Central Park is so worth camping out to get tickets for. See it now.

When I go outside and see people actually looking up as they walk, people jogging that seem to be confused about the proper motions, and less clothes all around, I know it can only mean one thing: Spring is coming! But the arrival of spring does not just mean more sunshine and the opening of baseball stadiums, it involves an allout "Spring Awakening," complete with all the accompanying connotations. In the words of Zack Braff, "Spring Awakening," a musical based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, is like ""Dead Poet's Society" on ecstasy set to [...]
