Hope you all had fun last night. Unfortunately for Baltimore tonight the Yeasayer/Chairlift show at he G Spot has been cancelled, but luckily there's also a fine show at the Wind Up Space with The Squaaks, Snowmen, and Labianca. In DC CSS play the 9:30 Club while Ryan Adams and Oasis play the Patriot Center. Finally if you're in the mood for solid hip hop then head on down to Johnny Brenda's in Philly to see Reef The Lost Cauze, Dice Raw, and Prowler. mp3: CSS - Fuckoff Is Not The Only Thing You Have To Show [...]

Also on the bill is a DJ set by our friends from Middle Distance Runner. Check out the prior post for some tunes. Now I know everyone can't make it to our [...]

While most of the music world was converging on Austin, Texas for the SXSW conference, Philadelphia was still asserting it's place as a music city to reckoned with last night at Johnny Brenda's . First up in a preview of next month's Bag Of Songs night April 20th at The M Room were the Thinking Machines with an amazing set of songs from their brand new cd, A Complete Record Of Urban Archaeology . A guitar oriented rhythmic sound sound I can best describe as sort [...]

Squaaks photo by Michael Alan Goldberg Not much going on this weekend in Philly and Baltimore/DC, only a few shows of note. Everybody must be having a good ol' time down Austin-way. So enjoy the weekend and make the best of it. Friday night, two local shows in Baltimore and DC are on the bill. Kadman is having a CD release show at the Metro Gallery with Rain The Shining , while Greenland and Bellflur team up for a show at [...]
February 29 only happens once every four years, so I decided to do something special for my weekly Friday mix. In addition to my normal new indie mix, I decided to add an all hip-hop one. Both consist of the normal 10 songs. I asked Joe to help me out and he came up with a 9 track classic indie mix to round everything out to 29 songs. So here are 3 in 1 post. Have a great weekend. Part I: Indie Fionn Regan - Be Good Or [...]

Have you ever been sound asleep and the phone rings and wakes you up at some absurd time from a totally peaceful slumber? Do you have friends who should know better but call at the wrong time and wake you up anyway? Today's five goes out to you. 1 : The Beatles - I'm So Tired Buy The White Album 2 : The Pretenders - I Go [...]

Wow, so this is a strange weekend. There is a huge line-up in Philly and it is sort of quiet elsewhere. That said, there is plenty to choose from and pretty much everyone can find something that interests them. Friday I will be at Milkboy Coffee in Ardmore with Jukebox The Ghost , but if you must go elsewhere, here's what to check out: - Cat Power / Appaloosa @ Starlight Ballroom SOLD OUT! - The Major Leagues / Wild Sweet Orange @ [...]

Alright, so I am last like always. However, I do promise that this is it. Finally, the end of our 2007 retrospectives. After this one, we move forward and start talking about some music from 2008. Anyway, here is my Best of 2007 post. For my list, I decided to stick to the Baltimore/Washington region. Enjoy... 3 Best Regional EPs credit 3. Bellman Barker - Anise & Anisette Last [...]

In DC, These United States govern the Black Cat with The Hackensaw Boys and John Bustine. The Velvet Lounge has a hip hop showcase featuring Flex Mathews, Good Will Ink, Oddisee, Enoch, XO, YU, and DJ V-Roc. There aren't usually a ton of good Sunday shows, but if you head up to Philly today there's a great one at the Khyber . Five sweet up and coming indie rock bands are poised to put on a ear pleasing show. The line up includes Eastern Conference Champions, Greyhounds, The Sky Drops, The Mural and the Mint, and, Baltimore's own, Squaaks. mp3: Eastern Conference Champions - Noah --> website --> buy mp3: Greyhounds - No Slogans In '76 --> website --> buy [...]

Although their name may be reminiscient of a sound you'll hear on the new Radiohead album, Squaaks music is not. Their bio describes their sound as "crunchy guitars, a driving rhythm and catchy melodies" and it's right on the money. Their new album Rock Control is part sixties garage rock, part eighties post punk with songs that are catchy and often lighthearted. They're also not afraid to show they have a sense of humor, check out the opening track of the disc, Two Hippies, and you're sure to crack a smile. Catch 'em this Friday in [...]

Tonight is the premiere show for the new indie showcase that I am booking and hosting, along with Jersey Mike Presents and WiAB Records . indie at the abbey will be held every Wednesday at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, PA. I am booking a weekly indie rock night at a club in Harrisburg, PA. There will be 2 bands each week for a measly $2. Since it starts next week, I wanted to do a mix for the first 4 shows. I'll be back next month with the second volume. Enjoy! 9/12/07 Black Tie Revue - Absent Radio Squaaks - Hot Tub 9/19/07 These United States - So High [...]

Let's keep this simple. To me, this site has always been about supporting the local music scene. So I decided, that there is no better way to celebrate our first anniversary, than to make a mix of local music from the past year. I had so much fun, that I ended up making two discs. Some of these bands have come a long way in the last 12 months, some didn't even exist when we started and others are no more. That said, every song is from a band that claims (or claimed) the Baltimore/Washington metro area as [...]
