UK producer Oliver Ledger has been crafting some brilliant garage as Squarehead. Grab a DL of his rework of this Aaliyah tune "One In A Million", but not before you give his "Keep It Moving" EP a preview as well - cracking hats, lightly broken kick, deep swinging basslines and snappy percussion that gives you nowhere else to go but UP. This is where it's at. > SQUAREHEAD [FB] > KEEP IT MOVING EP [JUNO] > DOWNLOAD | Squarehead - One In A Million [via [...]

Only at SXSW can you manage to travel to multiple countries in a span of a couple hours. Well, not literally of course, but it is possible to see bands from many different corners of the globe in one afternoon. I achieved this in just hours on the club-filled Sixth Street, followed swiftly by the Discovering Scotland showcase at Latitude 30. Sixth Street is every bit as legendary as the tourist trap t-shirts that advertise its amazingness. Everywhere you turn, you will either run into a band hanging out, playing [...]

Frank Yang Back to back festivals! What a great idea. Just prior to heading out to engage with Canadian Musicfest's 2012 edition, I took a look back at years past and noticed a couple trends - one, that I usually complain about the lineup ( check! ) and that as a result of not wanting to see the same old same old, I try to branch out and see new and unknown acts, usually from foreign climes, with little background and no guarantee of [...]

Check out this remix of Lumidee and her track "Never Leave You" remixed by 17 year old Squarehead from the UK. Squarhead is heavily influenced by Hip Hop, but has been perfecting his craft of blending house music with his stylistic interests. Sounding like a young Jamie XX on this remix, I'll definitely keep my eye out for more of his material.

I'll finally get to see Squarehead in the flesh on Saturday, Februrary 11, when they play the Pavilion, Cork, with Land Lovers and Tieranniesaur. Until then, this will have to suffice. It's an acoustic version of '20252, the first new track we've heard from the three-piece since they released their [Read more]

Here we are. The end of the sixth year of the Nialler9 poll. Thank you all once again for voting. We had about 100 or so votes that made up the results in songs , new artists, EPs and now, the big one - albums. Our ultimate winner has topped the poll before that doesn't negate the indisputable fact that there's plenty of superb Irish music contained within this list... 25. The Ambience Affair - Burials 24. Get your woolly hats out folks, because Squarehead are feeling so Christmassy they recorded a song for the holidays. It's a cover to be precise, of Darlene Love's 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)'. I interviewed Squarehead singer Roy in the summer prior to the release of the three-piece's debut album, [Read more]
Two years ago, I ran a series of guest posts from people involved in Irish music featuring their top 5 Irish acts at that moment. This time around, I thought I'd shift the focus to international and ask a similar question -
It's widely accepted that 2010 was a classic year for Irish bands, one that was always going to be difficult to reciprocate. Last year, the Point of Everything did a Best Songs of 2010 list that featured a measly six Irish bands. Looking back, so many more Irish bands deserved [Read more]

Before I talk about this track, I feel some context is necessary. Garage originated from house, but only took certain aspects, adding its own through further subgenres (such as 2-step). The deep bass that carries songs originates in 2-step, and has [...]

This is really cool. Squarehead and Patrick Kelleher got together to release a double A-side single. I got slightly confused trying to explain the idea behind it, but Harmless Noise says what I couldn't. 'Attention To Detail' is Squarehead taking on a Kelleher-type recording and 'Just A Tragedy' is Kelleher [Read more]
