Let's say you're the Web, one of the Mighty Comics stable of 60's superheroes, and you're trying to convince your concerned wife and harridan of a mother-in-law that dressing up in a gaudy costume and fighting crime is a worthwhile career. Would you really want to cite this particular incident.... (from Fly Man #38, July 1966; by Jerry Siegel and Paul Reinman) ...as a way of pleading your case? It's [...]
Like any other old person, I was limping around the other day listening carefully to "Tempted" and wondering how they did it. And then I ended up really paying attention to this song for the first time. Sweet-ass. 1978, comin' atcha! Squeeze - Take Me I'm Yours from their first album (which has an interesting history ), but you probably already have Singles 45's And Under ( insound / amazon CD / amazon [...]
Tonight we featured a birthday gift from the Mrs.: the No Thanks! box set put out by Rhino . We also learned that the programming schedule at the radio station changed for the Spring semester, which means that the show will no longer be broadcast live on Fridays from 6-8PM. Stay tuned for the new day and time. I will post it here as soon as I find out. Thanks for listening. Beat Surrender Podcast: February 1, 2008 Show [...]
"Yeah, I remember when she did that in 2005. It was a scandal. She's done 85 things since then. You're still mad about Offense #2 ?" -- Tom, informing Spike that the "fool woman" Spears has moved well beyond unbuckled kids "I don't want to say my 'excuse', but that's what has led me to these, you know, kinda outbursts I outbursted when I was on your show before." -- Ken Rogers, attributing his foulmouthed non-interviews to his Tri-Polar Situation "I loved it when Anna Nicole Smith died. It [...]
For this week's mix, a famously sampled Bob Dylan cover, T Rex in their early hippie nonsense phase, new stuff from Dengue Fever and Late of the Pier, and a White Whale track from the last issue of Esopus . The mix is a little on the dark side until the end, but it's the middle of winter, so you and your johns can like it or lump it. Also, a challenge: try getting off during the Teach-In track. Dutch ABBA wannabes with a really surreal command of the English language ("Maybe it's a bigot!") challenge all but the [...]
Squeeze "Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)" (Live 2007) - When I was young, most of the music I heard was on the Lite FM and contemporary pop radio stations that played in my parents' cars. That's how I first heard "Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)." I didn't know that it was by Squeeze til much later on, or that this was the same band that did "Tempted" and "Black Coffee In Bed." Even up through the '90s, a lot of the hits of the '80s just sort of blurred together in my mind, as if there was [...]

The theme of Contrast Podcast #79 was "Infidelity," for which a lot of songs fit the bill. Here's my own mix on the subject. Clare Burson: These Boots Are Made For Walkin' from Thieves (2007) -- More Clare Burson on Speed of Dark Steely Dan: Dirty Work from Can't Buy a Thrill (1972) -- Steely Dan on Time Travel Tuesday Weezer: Say It Ain't So from Weezer (1994) Squeeze: Tempted from Eastside Story [...]
Somehow, while nobody was looking, the food industry managed to sell a truly horrendous lie to you, me, and the rest of the world. I'm talking, of course, about the sun-dried tomato. This shriveled red menace has become particularly ubiquitous over the last decade as a trendy topping for pasta dishes, pizzas, and sandwiches. What nobody has the guts to point out is that these things are nothing more than chewy crimson lies. "Sun-dried"? Really? And when was the last time you saw somebody laying tomato slices out in the sun? A heat [...]

The Virgins have to be one of the most entertaining bands to search for on Google. The results offer up a large array of topics dealing with anything from Christianity to pornography. Hmm... it was quite interesting to see "The Blessed Virgin Mary" above "Hot Teen Virgins!" in the results. Hyped with deserved acclaim, New York's latest four-piece slides in somewhere between the two. Enjoyably enough, they compete with the irresistibility of "Hot Teen Virgins!" quite well, employing a slick musical delivery mainly consisting of catchy art-rock, rhythmic funk, and dedicatory soul. At this point in time they lay [...]

Well, we're movin' on up... To the east side... To a dee-luxe apartment in the sky... The kids are loving their new digs. (Skillfully assembled by yours truly, I might add.) Their moms might have been homeless beggar cats, but now the whole extended family is living the domesticated high life. Only in [...]

Squeeze singer and guitarist Chris Difford: "'Tempted' was written in a cab on the way to Heathrow, I just wrote down what I saw and how I felt as we wormed our way through the traffic. I also must have anticipated a good time on tour as the chorus suggests." Alright, Chris, but what the f*ck are you talking about in probably your biggest hit? Now, I've always enjoyed the song 'Tempted,' and despite the fact that it now makes me want to eat Burger King, chew Dentyne Ice, wear Gap clothing and keep playing Grand [...]
TGIF in a big big way this week. We got a new (old) car this week and all it has is the radio and a cassette deck. I'm waiting for the aux input we ordered to arrive (hopefully tomorrow) and since I haven't bothered to dig out any old tapes I've been stuck with the radio all week long. It hasn't been all that bad though. Here are three songs that I heard yesterday which restored my faith in the radio (well some of it at least). Thanks 89.1 WONC . [...]

Heartbreaker Disconsolation. Misery. Abject despair. If your a football fan then you will recognise these feelings. For some fans these days come around more often than those of other supporters, but ultimately all will suffer the slings and arrows of faithful devotion. And this is the time of year when it happens more often than any other. The pain of relegation. The disappointment of finishing one place outside of the play off positions. A play off final defeat. Either at the match or watching on television the misery [...]
Squeeze "If I Didn't Love You" - The full line is "If I didn't love you, I'd hate you," and the more I hear this song, the more I realize that ultimately the singer is erring on the side of the latter. The woman being addressed is a total cipher -- an object, an objective, a source of unending sexual frustration. He fumbles through these forced, cliched romantic scenarios -- all of which seem distinctly early 80s to me; I've always imagined this being played out by Sam Malone and Diane Chambers -- but for a song [...]
