New Delhi electronica duo Midival Punditz and Indian-American producer/musician Karsh Kale , collectively known as MPKK , have composed the music of upcoming Bollywood film Soundtrack . The soundtrack for, um, Soundtrack , has two Laxmikant Pyarelal songs, 'Ruk Jaana Nahin' and 'Yeh Jeevan Hai' reworked by the composers and sung by Suraj Jagan and Malini Awashty respectively. The film's official Facebook page claims it is "the official remake of the award-winning, cult film It's All Gone Pete Tong " and reportedly have permission for the same. [...]
A couple of months ago we wrote about the Bollywood film Shaitan and its links with the indie scene . Suman Sridhar of Sridhar/Thayil voiced two tracks for the film, 'Hawa Hawai' and 'Khoya Khoya Chand', both largely popular radio tracks. More recently, Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale turned music directors for the film Soundtrack which has its fair share of indie links too. The video in question is based on an excellent recreation of the Mohammed Rafi-sung SD Burman/Shailendra track from [...]
Indie-mainstream crossover is decidedly on the rise, a topic we covered previously when examining scene ties with Mukesh Bhatt's Haunted 3D . If one horror movie didn't do the trick, here's another to reinforce the point. Bejoy Nambiar's Shaitan lists percussionist Ranjit Barot and producer Anupam Roy as composers. Barot has composed three song for the movie's OST, and has also sung on two tracks. We attended the music launch of the movie last month, and Barot performed these songs with disastrous results. Hopefully, the magic of auto-tune will fix that on the [...]

The second edition of Sidestand's Control ALT Delete series of gigs saw performances by local acts Artificial Red, Forcefield, The Riot Peddlers, The Lightyears Explode, Split and Sridhar/Thayil. It also featured a surprise performance by Zero. B69, you beauty. By far Mumbai's grimiest venue, the suburban music hall played host to the second edition of Sidestand's Control ALT Delete series of gigs which lets fans pay what they want (you have to pay something ) to watch the buffet of bands on offer. About 200 scenesters showed up to sample newbies Artificial Red, Forcefield, [...]

We've picked some of the best live photos from gigs we attended in 2010. Check them out below! February: Bhayanak Maut @ Club Marimba, Mumbai. An eight-inch-high stage, Tuborg-fueled moshers and static green lighting - you gotta love metal gigs. With practically zero distance between audience and band, it was a rare opportunity to frame the two together. February: Swarathma @ Poona Blind School, Pune. This was one of Swarathma's first 'Action Replay' gigs, held the [...]
The Indiecision '10 is a recap of the year gone by in Indian indie and a recognition of the work of its artists and those involved with the creation and promotion of the music. The Best Song Indian is the best single recording released, in any format (CD, video, MySpace, etc) by an Indian independent artist in 2010. 'Sau Rupiya' The Riot Peddlers Old school punk in the vein of Minor Threat and Black Flag finds its Indian reincarnation with the anti-establishmentarians The [...]

Last year, it was mostly about Anushka Manchanda's bikini . This time, the sixth edition of the Jack Daniels Rock Awards will be held on January 20, 2011, honoring bands from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Hard Rock Cafe, Mumbai. The gig will feature performances by last year's Best Band winner Swarathma , and Ashu & The Petri Dish Project (listed as just Petri Dish). Recently back in live action lyrical pop act Sridhar/Thayil have released a recording of live set regular 'I'm The One' on their MySpace page . The recording is a collaboration with ex- Asian Dub Foundation (who will headline the first edition of our very own music festival ) man Dr Das. 'I'm The One' could pass as part of the soundtrack to a '70s Bollywood B-movie. Jeet Thayil lifts the refrain off Jimi Hendrix's 'Purple Haze', combining it with trademark S/T MIDI-run filmi-ness. Suman Sridhar deliberately adds Bombaiyya to her accent, [...]
Amit 'The Groovebox' Gurubaxani examines the phenomenon of music inspired by other art forms, and how it might apply to the Indian indie scene. About a month ago, on holiday in London, I stumbled upon a gig at the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch. It was a Monday, which like here is not a big gig night, but maybe because the Old Blue Last is a pub run by the chaps behind Vice Magazine and Recordings, two events were on when my friends and I went by. The first was a book launch, and the second [...]

Mumbai lyrical pop act Sridhar/Thayil played the Blue Frog on Tuesday, Nov 2. We were there. We've come to expect theatrics from Sridhar/Thayil . The lyrical pop duo, responsible for one of our top 25 songs of the decade , brought a decidedly sombre 11-track set to the Blue Frog recently; their first gig in the city since February. Suman Sridhar and Jeet Thayil walk the tightrope between performance art and musicianship. While the former's songbird histrionics are powered by the incredible depth of her voice (our contributing editor Amit [...]

Suman Sridhar and Jeet Thayil brought the slash to Blue Frog, Mumbai last night for their first gig in the city since February. Dates 02 Nov - Blue Frog, Mumbai 18 Nov - Hard Rock Cafe, Pune All's been quiet on the band front for S/T though Jeet Thayil is currently working on an opera with British composer Edward Rushton. More from our best song of '09 nominees as we hear it.

Mumbai electro rock act Shaa'ir + Func launched their third studio album Mantis at the Blue Frog, Mumbai on Thursday, Sep 2. We were there. It's perhaps noteworthy that Shaa'ir + Func played just two songs from Mantis in their opening 10 at the album's launch at the Blue Frog. This is a band that has released three quality records in just four years (no mean feat, especially for an Indian band ), is one of the most popular live acts in the scene (the south Mumbai venue [...]
Jeet Thayil of Mumbai lyrical pop duo Sridhar/Thayil is working on a new opera, in collaboration with British composer Edward Rushton. Last year, Sridhar/Thayil performed an opera noir entitled The Flying Wallas , which was about a "lyrical conversation between a soprano and a ghost about God, murder and showbiz". We spoke with Jeet Thayil about his new project - a new opera with conversational ghosts. He tells us about how the collaboration happened, and we want to keep his voice in a box in a room and listen to it forever. [...]

I burnt my Barbies when I was a kid... How many Barbie burners do we have here? Mumbai electro rock act Shaa'ir + Func launched their third studio album Mantis (full stream) at the Blue Frog, Mumbai last night. The band's 22-song set featured a selection of material spanning the band's catalog, with new versions of set staples and a few rarely performed songs including 'New Day' and 'Swirl' (from New Day: The Love Album ), and 'Her Story' and 'Hard To Forget' [...]
