Let the Devil out Rollins Band Nice Comments: Rollins Band does Van Halen , poorly. Joe#1 Fugazi Sub Pop 7" Singles Club Comments: Fugazi's entrant into the Sub Pop singles club is not interesting or challenging. Sinking Black Flag Loose Nut Comments: Probably the best song off Loose Nut. The short uneven album came at the end of Black Flag. Still this song about descent into isolation and depression is prophetic. Vikings [...]

Millia Records , Yves Larock's own record label, is proud to present 'Sunsation' – a hot new collaboration combining the talents of Fred Lilla and Blumenkraft . Fred Lilla is a young prodigy whose productions have already been supported by the likes of Sebastian Ingrosso, Avicii, Arno Cost and Norman Doray. Still only 17, Fred has progressed from cutting up well-received bootlegs to releasing his own singles to critical acclaim on labels such as Frickbeat, Shaftmusic Electro, Musik X Press, Sunhouse Records and PR Underground. His collaboration with ImanoS on Be Loved has [...]

Marco Benevento (photo by Greg Aiello) Yessir, it's been another year, and one that boasted its fair share of fair jams. Therefore, I have made my annual stab at a list of favorites. Despite any misgivings, I think I have assembled a list of albums that hit me in the right spot at the right time in order to merit a place in my heart. Please enjoy. Also, please note that following my Top 15 is a list of my 10 favorite Columbus records of 2008. Our humble burg cranked out a triumphant pile [...]

If you happen to have some spare cash after the last week's gigantic week of releases, you might want to check out a few gems that are currently making the rounds this week. I think the first album on a lot of people's shopping list is Vampire Weekend's selftitled debut. I swear, the hype building for this album has been absolutely ridiculous since last year, and it's definitely hard to avoid. I finally gave in and listened to it a few weeks ago. It's a decent record, but I dunno if it's something i'll [...]

The Helio Sequence in-studio, celebrating their CD release today photo by Chona Kasinger Got any of that holiday cash still lying around? If you haven't cashed Aunt Edith's check yet, now's the time 'cause this week's new releases are not to be missed. If you've been listening to KEXP at all, or downloading our podcasts , you're sure to have heard many of these bands: Vampire Weekend, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, The Shackeltons, Yoav, and Xiu Xiu. From the Northwest come two fantastic releases from The Helio Sequence [...]

Another good show at Call The Office last night...First I was impressed with a band called SSM , who opened the show....a 3 peice from Detroit...they were more of dance/punk outfit...but it was good....The vocals coulda been better... Then The Von Bondies ripped threw a very short and loud set.....with Christmas lights...They played some new material, but I wished they had played more..I did enjoy the old stuff, since this was my first time seeing the Bondies... [...]
Tegan & Sara - Back In Your Head (RAC Mix) SSM - Deja Vu The Fast Sails - Sweetheart The Long Winters - Pushover Owen - Bad News The Album Leaf - Always For You * Donna Summer - I Feel Love *

>> The guitar chord you are about to hear is from the video clip for Morrissey 's "The First Of The Gang To Die" posted below. Go down and hit pause now so as not to get startled. >> This very brief item at Pun Canoes about a forthcoming tour from Detroit garage rockers The Von Bondies reminded us of SSM , as the latter act is supporting the former on a slate of dates next month. SSM 's self-titled 2006 set had a couple very strong tracks, and every time [...]

It's common knowledge that you can't teach an old garage band new tricks. Or, at least I thought it was common knowledge that garage bands forever stayed in the garage, until I put on this new track by SSM, "Start Dancing." On this number from their second album for Alive Records, John Szymanski, Dave Shettler, and Marty Morris have updated a steadfastly rigid genre with a synthetic, robot groove that bridges the divide between Detroit's storied histories of techno and garage. Szymanski's cool, detached plea to stay on the dance floor isn't the most convincing order to get down -- [...]

Have I ever mentioned that I love The Black Keys? I've been a huge fan since their early days and it's not even because I'm from Ohio. I'm also gaining more and more respect for Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney for what they are doing behind the scenes. Patrick started his own label called Audio Eagle Records and he's working hard to bring some other Ohio bands into your consciousness. Meanwhile, Dan is out producing bands that are following right in the Keys' blues-stomping boots. One of our favorites is Radio Moscow out [...]

I have four album reviews almost ready to go - just needing the finishing touches, really - but I haven't been around for the past two nights to finish them up. I also need to type up this week's playlist, which I should probably be doing right now. Instead, I'm going to share a song that was stuck in my head for the duration of yesterday afternoon, a good track for a Friday: " Sick " The band is called SSM - which stands for Szymanski Shettler Morris (their names), [...]
