By now, most of you have had a chance to ingest the bleh lineup from the good folks over at Goldenvoice. I believe that we're too spoiled and expect the moon every year, that when marginal acts, i.e. Phoenix are put into headlining roles, we tend to kind of freak out. The reason being is that Phoenix belongs on the second line of the bill, not top. At least not yet. They've had ONE really good album, and some aight albums along the way. If they could've put together the Smiths, Rolling Stones, or even a [...]

BY JORDAN MAINZER A true Renaissance man. Music video director Hiro Murai has worked with the likes of St. Vincent, Earl Sweatshirt, and David Guetta (yes, David Guetta, making his FP debut). Recently, I spoke with Murai over the phone about his creative process, his inspirations, and why he has a case of musician envy. (This interview originally appeared on my art and design blog, DRA .) Frontier Psychiatrist: Describe your process. To what extent does the artist collaborate with you or have a vision for the [...]

St Tropez - "In Pictures" Single out now on Bandcamp This San Francisco-based quartet just released my new 'jam'.

Artwork by Francesca Bonifacio Yesterday, we unveiled your picks for our 2012 Reader's Poll , and today we're continuing our year-end coverage by revealing our Honorable Mentions. 2012 was a great year for music, and it was tough to only choose 31 albums, so we made sure to include some picks that we enjoyed but didn't quite make it on our list . Be sure to come back to the site everyday for the rest of the week to see our Best EPs and Best Songs of 2012, along with our personal picks [...]

A few weeks ago, some believed that the Mayan Long Count Calendar would represent an end to the human race, with large beastly demigods destroying the planet Earth and its inhabitants. Thankfully, not true. However, what if the end was nigh? Would you have been pleased that the songs of 2012 made you dance with joy before being eaten by Quetzalcoatl? Would you kick rocks and wait impatiently for doom knowing that you would never-ever have to listen to Mumford and Sons one more time? Or would you moon over the albums that you would miss in 2013 as the [...]

St. Vincent @ Chicago's Vic Theatre in May ( more by James Richards IV ) Annie Clark may not have released a St. Vincent record this year, but she did tour quite a bit in support of 2011's Strange Mercy . The one record Annie DID welcome this year was a collaboration with David Byrne , titled Love This Giant . She also toured a bunch [...]

Clif's top ten list for 2012 with twenty others receiving honorable mention: 10. Cat Meat – Cat Meat We previewed Cat Meat’s self-titled debut as a Friday Free Feature on November 9, and it’s been in constant rotation between my iPod and car stereo. A complex, experimental alt. country/folk album that claims influences such as Wilco, Sparklehorse and Califone; the classic psychedelic experimenalist, Captain Beefheart; and the legendary bluesmen Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie McTell. When you listen, they’re all there in subtle drips, drabs and dollops. [...]

2012 was a great year for collaborations, and an even better year for surprises. The rising stars of rap, pop, and indie all worked together as we might have expected, but some of the best pairings took place in the form of odd couples. We saw some things we never would have expected, and the year was better off for it. Here are some of our favorite unholy unions of the year. no lie i just finished something with @ psy_oppa and @ 2chainz the mayan calendar predicted this — dıpןo (@diplo) December 4, 2012 [...]
2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]

A couple of weeks back, we took a look at the best books that various Flavorpill staffers had read over the course of the year, and today we're repeating the exercise with albums — we've surveyed our highly trained staff and asked them what the best record they heard in 2012 was. The results, we hope you'll agree, are rather interesting, encompassing everything from Ke$ha and Swans to a hitherto undiscovered fondness for obscure country reissues. Do feel free, of course, to add your voice to the discussion in the comments section! [...]
#35: The Head and the Heart @ Forecastle [Original Post] I'd heard a song or two by Head and the Heart going into their show at Forecastle, but I'll admit that I was really just seeing them because there wasn't a lot of competition for their time slot at Forecastle. But just like what happens [...]
As I looked over my playlists from the year 2012, I have tried to only add the songs that either charge me up or songs that seem to find a way to my heart and soul. Here are my favorites for 2012. I couldn’t possibly rank them, so they are simply listed in the order that they were released. Editor's Note: The majority of the songs are in a playlist at the bottom of the post page. Cloud Nothings - "Stay Useless" This song reminds me of that awkward wonky [...]
