Stabbing Westward came to popularity following the success of the industrial rock scene headed by Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Along with bands like Gravity Kills and God Lives Underwater, they had short-lived success as the genre became mainstream for a couple years during the mid-late 902s. Stabbing Westward's 1996 album Wither Blister Burn & Peel got them face time on MTV and enabled the masses to see the music video for one of their best songs, "Shame". The visuals were very cinematic and even included subtitles, always a great addition to any music video. If you have never [...]

A hidden treasure for way too long. Swedish electronic-rock trio Lowe are a band that I feel you lot should get to know. They've got the look, they've got the Scandinavian je ne sais quoi that has the ladies swoon and of course, they also have the songs. From the remains of 90s synthpop band Statemachine , another band I quite liked, Lowe set out to blend quality songwriting with a slightly more aggressive electronic sound. To me, they've often reminded a bit of the best moments of 90s industrial rock also-rans Stabbing Westward but with a bit more panache. [...]

Here we are, back at 1994 when the punk was punk and the grunge was grungy. The mid '90s was a hell of a time for film soundtracks to be perfectly honest. Every musical genre was retrofitted to movies, seamlessly holding them together, sometimes by a thin stream of consciousness ( Lost Highway ), or other times when the film enhanced the sounds of a depicted era ( Singles , The Crow ). Somewhere in the shuffle of this decade between hair bands and nu-metal, a movie came around that not so much defined a generation but instead became [...]
I've gotten a bunch of requests to keep this feature going so here it is. I can hardly believe that it has been almost 3 months since I last posted some songs from the 90's. Has it really been that long? It has, but something about the untimely and sudden death of Michael Jackson yesterday made me want to post "Remember The Time." Do you remember the video? It was atrocious despite (or because) featuring both Eddie Murray and Magic Johnson. Those were the days. And even though Michael was a freak he was [...]

Today is Friday the 13th, and tomorrow Valentine's Day, so what better theme for this week's mixtape than ANTI-love songs. I know, it's not a terribly original theme, and I've done it before , but it just seemed to fit so well, with the F13-V14 setup and all. Some of these are obvious: Elvis Costello's I hope You're Happy , Stephen Kellogg's You've Changed pretty much sum it up in the title. GNR/VR's Used To Love Her is a favorite of a good friend of mine- we hear it a lot on [...]
My best of 2008 list is out . Mine is obviously more credible than lists put out by Spin, Rolling Stone, NME, Q, or Pitchfork. However, I forgot to add some honorable mentions (links go to my reviews): Squarepusher: Just A Souvenir - Acid jazz on..well..acid as the DnB god shows that he can fucking ROCK a bass. Download The Glass Road now. The Fireman: Electric Arguments - So Paul McCartney and Youth from Killing Youth walk into a recording studio...It sounds like the set-up to a weird joke, but [...]

In the mid 90's there was a sudden glut of industrial lite bands. At the forefront was Stabbing Westward. They sucked. But they thankfully disappeared. Can anyone tell me whatever happened to Stabbing Westward?
