About two weeks ago, we already posted a live version of Zaz's splendid Piaf cover Dans la rue here . Since she with the husky voice is a dedicated Gainsbourg aficionado as well, she also played a sparse, and highly intense manouche-style version of Serge's Ces petits riens during the same gig, backed by bassist Mathieu Verlot and guitarist Guillaume Juhel. You will find this cover neither on her recent no. 1 album nor anywhere on the net. The song was recorded during an intimate live performance at MDR radio station, Halle, Germany, with an audience of ten (!) handpicked [...]
When I talked to Guuz while he was preparing family dinner the other day, he mentioned that Stacey Kent's new album Raconte-moi (see here ) reminded him a bit of the late, still too little known cult chanteuse Blossom Dearie – all too true, and there can't be no higher praise. From my most secret source, here's two short clips from a most recent interview with Stacey talking about her self-image, storytelling, jazz sensibility, and arrangements. Raconte-moi. She's telling us. Stacey Kent – Interview Clip 1 Stacey Kent - [...]

When an acclaimed author and Booker Prize winner is writing lyrics for you, you've made it. Literary superstar Kazuo Ishiguro did so for Stacey Kent 's 2007 breakthrough album Breakfast on the Morning Train, her first record on Blue Note that sold 150000 copies in France alone. Though Stacey hails originally from New Jersey and is now living in Colorado, her brand new CD, Raconte-moi, is an all-French affair, featuring carefully selected songs by Claire Denamur, Benjamin Biolay, and Keren Ann, among others. My favorites are the title song, and the irresistible Venus du Mélo, both co-written [...]
Stacy Kent is a jazz singer who - like Jennifer Hartswick - came to my attention when she was featured on Putumayo's Women In Jazz collection. Kent's Grammy nominated Breakfast On The Morning Train was released by Blue Note Records, features lyrics penned by novelist Kazuo Ishiguro , and contains a mix of innocuous jazz tunes, acoustic pop covers, and pretty French ballads. Most of the melodies on Breakfast On The Morning Train have smooth, mellow [...]

Women of Jazz is the magnificent new collection from Putumayo Records featuring some of my favorite modern female jazz singers, such as Melody Gardot , Madeleine Peyroux , Cassandra Wilson , and Hopes Waits . The disc also features Sophie Milman, Kate Paradise, Jennifer Hartswick, Stacey Kent, Della Griffin, and Etta Jones. Each song is resplendent, and I recommend the album to anyone who enjoys jazz and/or beautiful female vocals. The silky lilt of Melody Gardot opens Women of Jazz with [...]
Playlist du 27 mars au 3 avril... Cela commence par un murmure ("Never Let me Go" de Stacey Kent).

As mentioned before, Jazz is continuing to thrive, and I am perfectly confident in Stacey Kent . Kent has over a decade worth contribution to jazz with 6 albums, several awards won and special arrangements with well-known artists. She does it even better 7th time around now with heavy hitters Blue Note Records who are responsible for releases of some of the greatest Jazz musicians since the 50s including Lady Ella, Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughn. Her new album [...]

"Signing with Blue Note, I feel like Steffi Graf must have felt the first time she stepped onto court to play Martina Navratilova." Great soundbite, taken from this biography on Bluenote.com. It also says that for her Blue Note-debut, Stacey Kent recorded "two of her favourite French songs by celebrated songwriter Serge Gainsbourg", which suggests she handpicked 'm herself. Not true. Ces Petits Riens and La Saisons des Pluies were send to her by French A&R-guy Nicolas Pflug, but she loved 'm (see this epk ) right away. In the linked interview, Stacey [...]
