Peter Case is coming to San Diego. Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Almost every artist in the history of mankind has at least one title in their catalog that is a compilation, a stopgap collection meant to maintain interest between releases (often to boost holiday sales) or to fulfill a contractual obligation. This is the former, a chance to make use, one more time, of a lot of wasted time over the past twelve months. Two years ago, I reflected on the annual, childhood tradition of spending New Year's Day with a half dozen blank cassettes as Q102 played back the Top 102 songs of the previous [...]
The ever-iconoclastic Stan Ridgway discusses his songwriting process and how it shaped his latest album, Neon Mirage.

Paloma and I watched about an hour of that wretched flick Mannequin in which Andrew McCarthy plays a window dresser who becomes amorous with a mannequin...it's dreadful. We happened across it, several months ago, while channel-surfing one morning, and we stopped. It was as though the universe had thrown down the gauntlet and we felt compelled to push ourselves to watch as much as possible. (twisted, yes, but hasn't everyone done this?) But, I've hit Pretty In Pink tonight and I realize that it's difficult for me not to think [...]
Stan Ridgway, forever burdened by the sobriquet "former Wall of Voodoo frontman" returns for his first solo album since 2004. "Neon Mirage" is lonely, mournful, and, for Ridgway, incredibly personal.... Download your favourite album at The Mood Indicator

When Laura Ann Masura's longtime friend Josiah Mazzaschi heard she had been injured in a motorcycle accident, he didn't sit on his hands. He got on the phone. Mazzaschi, the frontman of local indie-rock band Light FM , has organized a benefit concert, Jam for Laura Ann, on Sunday at the Echoplex to help Masura, a fellow musician and also a bartender at the downtown's Redwood Bar, defray some $15,000 in medical expenses. The 5 p.m. show ($12) features a heady cast of performers, including the Backwards Clock Society, featuring Billy Corgan along with Kerry [...]

[Random news items from my inbox ...] Friends are rallying en masse in support of Peter Case , the L.A. icon who underwent emergency open-heart surgery on Jan. 15. A fund, Hidden Love , has been set up to help defray the medical expenses of the former Plimsouls frontman, 55, who had no health insurance and is expected to make a full recovery. And a three-night benefit May 1-3 is planned at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica — the $50-per-night shows feature Loudon Wainwright [...]

I grew up in a house of music. This is the 60's, so you have to realise the my parents were born into the depression and grew up during war. Dad loves big band and jazz music. Mom is a range of jazz to Johnny Cash and Tom Jones. The first album covers I remember seeing were a bunch by Benny Goodman and Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass " Whipped Cream and Other Delights " as a kid I always thought this was really cool. But the first music I remember, for some [...]

Who doesn't love a good story?, not I, that's certain - a decent tale is one of my soft-spots in popular song, seemingly harking back to a time long before iPods, CD's, lp's and even wax blimmin' cylinders. I was planning to make this a possible series about fine, quality songs that majored on the story-telling; think 'She's Leaving Home' rather than 'She Loves You', and indeed I already posted about one of my faves by Mott the Hoople today , and I'd certainly include 'Caught by the Fuzz' from Supergrass, which I posted back [...]
