Did you see me rave about the excellent Out of Sight, Out of Town LP from Standard Fare at the beginning of the year? You definitely should have, but if you didn't, this song's going to remind you just what I was talking about. The group's signed up to release a single with WIAIWYA , and you can grab that single for nice decent price. More importantly, the band's been generous to provide us with a stream of their [...]

Standard Fare From: Sheffield, United Kingdom Despite their far too modest name Standard Fare are far from a bog standard indie band. Their jingly jangly bittersweet pop with intelligent lyrics recalls the much missed sound of their Sheffield forebears The Long Blondes. It's not original, it's not novel it may not even be fashionable but when did well written, catchy pop songs performed with elan, panache and not a little energy go out of [...]

Photo by Tom Martin "I don't like your girlfriend," Standard Fare's Emma Kupa sings to open "Girlfriend," but it's no Avril cover: "Not everyone has encyclopedic knowledge of music," she winks a few lines later as the song erupts into low-end-heavy guitars. For me, no band is dissecting relationships better than Standard Fare right now - this year's excellent Out of Sight, Out of Town follows the flawless Noyelle Beat with another set of witty but heartfelt narratives. The new track's a one-off single for Wiaiwya Records ' 2012 73 series, [...]

Sleuth 's cassette Brave Knew Nothing has been available for nearly a year, but I just found out about it about a week ago. A quick search through my RSS reader shows that they've mostly avoided detection up to now save for an appearance on a Cloudberry fanzine CD. The sharp detectives in charge of the NY Popfest have been on their trail as well and the band will be appearing at this year's Popfest scheduled May 17 - 20. How has this excellent Vancouver, BC band and their wonderful EP gone mostly unnoticed [...]

Stumbled across The Hangover Lounge recently on Bandcamp and they were offering a Limited Edition 103 EP that included a couple of tracks from familiar artists, for a fiver the EP was impossible to resist and I was duly rewarded. The EP features are total of six tracks all of which you can listen to on the widget below, including an acoustic version of Standard Fare's 'Darth Vader' and a track from Nat Johnson and the Figureheads 'Wifery', along with the quality EP you get the obligatory download and the label throw in a couple of posters and [...]

It used to be a long-standing tradition for WWWTM to produce a quality end-of-month playlist of juicy mp3s that were gracing the iPod of our founding father, Lord Jal of the Shire. This short list of what's been doing the rounds on the Schönberg turntable over the last month is by no means a replacement for the classic WWWTM playlist, just wanted to log what I've been listening to. Enjoy (or otherwise)! Field Music - A New Town Friends - Friend Crush Allo Darlin' - Capricornia Standard Fare [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Recent years have seen a reemergence of power-pop, which really just adds up to kicking out hard-rocking tunes with a whole lot of sheen. Sheffield's Standard Fare definitely have an affinity for the purity of pop, and their newest album Out of Sight, Out of Town , will have you applauding for both its simplicity and quality. Trickling guitar lines introduce you to Out of Sight, Out of Town by [...]
I haven't posted much in the last week. This is not because I'm getting bored of posting, but rather because I've been listening to a few new albums that I've acquired in the post-Christmas, early new year lull. They're mainly albums that I've missed out on over the last year, and one of them is so good that I've decided to review it for you. Out of Sight, Out of Town is the second album from Sheffield Indie-popsters Standard Fare. The album was released under the radar just before Christmas and so did not get enough of a [...]
Standard Fare's sophomore release offers surprising depth and complexity for an indie-pop outfit.

I've been mostly cut-off from the internet this week thanks to living in a pre-War building that has cable installed in ways McGuyver never would've attempted. (A vision of a SOPA future, perhaps.) But we're back on now and I managed to put this one together while unplugged. Last week we got mostly dancey songs, and this week the guitars are back. A lot of exciting new stuff here I think. And one old song. Have a swell weekend! DOWNLOAD WINTRY MIX 01.20.2012 Here's the tracklist: [...]

I've spent most of the past 18 months obsessing over Standard Fare's The Noyelle Beat , a relationship vivisection as charismatic and emotionally potent as any electric break-up record since Cursive's Domestica . In March 2010 (at SXSW, it appears), Groupee captured the band tearing through a handful of the album's best songs like hungry bears. Please join me in putting these on loop. Bonus points to singer Emma Kupa for the Absolutely Kosher shirt, R.I.P. All the videos after the jump, more goodness on Groupee.com . "Love Doesn't Just Stop," above, and duet "A [...]

Indie pop darlings Standard Fare will release their sophomore album Out of Sight, Out of Town. on January 24th via Melodic. Combining stark subject matter with their bright music, the young band believes that they are just now finding their place. "We're now in our mid twenties - not young and not old, not yet with kids but starting to earn money, starting to see how we fit into the wider world and how we feel about this," says singer/bassist Emma Cooper. "The album's lyrics are a bit more mature than our debut - we didn't [...]

Limbo. It's a funny place to be, but it provided inspiration for the second album from Standard Fare, the Sheffield-based indie-pop power trio who debuted with 2010's The Noyelle Beat, their lovelorn, melodic songs and male/female vocals making them the new darlings of the indie-pop scene. "We're now in our mid twenties - not young and not old, not yet with kids but starting to earn money, starting to see how we fit into the wider world and how we feel about this," says singer/bassist Emma Cooper. "The album's lyrics are a bit more mature than our debut - we [...]

Philadelphia - Standard Fare " I'm going to have to wait a year to see you again in Philadelphia. " I'm sorry. I'm not much fun. I'm incredibly down. All songs of longing and distance cut acutely, even the most jump-around-the-room-top-of-lu ngs-singing joyous ones. I guess this song was always a sad one, i just never noticed. Never could feel it personally. Never dreamed i would. A year. Six months. Unless i find a big bag of money somewhere, somehow, someway. I'm not much fun.
