You've probably heard the sad news by now that 602s teen heartthrob Davy Jones, leader of The Monkees, died today at age 66. Although the band was formed as what we'd consider today as a marketing ploy, a sort of Americanized Beatles, their appeal grew astronomically, and young girls and boys all around the country would run home from school just to watch Davy and the band on TV. While they wrote few songs of their own, they placed an enduring mark on a number of pop songs they covered from others, making them so recognizably theirs that you'd most [...]
Watch covers performed at Lollapalooza by Foo Fighters, Lykke Li, Coldplay, Foster the People, Ween, A Perfect Circle, The Vaccines, Lissie, Patrich Stump, and more!
I grew up fishing with my step-grandfather on a lake in California for a few summers trolling for trout and playing in the mud as a kid. Every year the you'd have to walk down farther and farther to the boat because of the drought. Because of global warming i think that lake might be topped off by now. We stopped going to the lake after he passed away but will always treasure the boredom, eating balony and drinking cokes. It was not a very glamorous spot where the trailer was but it was a small fishing mecca and had [...]
This is one of the coolest sets it has ever been my good fortune to come across.

This tune, written by Turtles leader Howard Kaylan, originally appeared on the back of their first Top 10 hit, their cover of Bobby Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe . It later appeared on their second album, 19662s You Baby/Let Me Be . Hardly anything earth-shattering, it sounds like something the Kinks or the Standells might've done. Great for your garage-band of 45-year old doctors: sounds original, easy to play. The Turtles - Almost There Buy The Turtles on [...]
I don't have much to talk about tonight. I'm feeling kind of out of it. And by that I mean I'm a little depressed. Not in a "I'm going to down a bottle of painkillers!" way, but in more of a, "Jesus I need to figure my shit out!" kind of way. Though I probably wouldn't mind the painkillers. Anyway, I have a busy week ahead of me. I guess it's good to clear my mind of stupid thoughts and, well, focus on sports and getting drunk: there's the Red Sox game on Tuesday night against the Angels [...]

A few weeks ago, to kick-off the Memorial Day holiday, we launched our first summer mixtape of 2010. Due to the huge success of that mix, we started work on putting together Mix No. 2 shortly thereafter - and here are the results (work on Mix No. 3 is already in progress). Obviously, these summer [...] Related posts:Halloween Indie Rock Songs, Vol I: Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, The Kissaway Trail, Flaming Lips, Beach House, Cat Power... The King Khan & BBQ Show's break-up last week in Daegu, South Korea was raucously entertaining, much like the garage-rockers' renowned shows. Jay Mattson provides his first-hand account of the chaotic scene at Bar Guess, where Arish Khan and Mark Sultan have appeared to part ways after over a decade of working together.

This Saturday legendary garage rockers The Standells make their debut UK performance! Best known for their hit 'Dirty Water', The Standells released a string of snotty, aggressive garage singles in the mid to late 1960s which are now rightly regarded as proto-punk classics. 'Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White', 'Why Pick On Me', 'Riot On Sunset Strip' - the songs of The Standells have been covered by everyone from Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and U2 to Spacemen 3, Minor Threat and a million ’77 punk bands. Check out more here . [...]

So a few of the readers here may be from Boston. A lot probably aren't. Well, if you're unaware, the city of Boston lost its clean water supply for about four days due to a breach in a pipe that delivered water to Boston and many of its suburbs. Well, we have our water back. And now that "aquapocalypse" - as some termed it - is over, the jokes aren't going to stop. This blog entry, included. The first song will be familiar to anyone that's gone to Fenway Park and stuck around after the [...]

New in a line of "super limited" 73 releases on Sleep All Day Records , the dudes from French Kissing have just sent over their (catchy) brand new single "Oh Suzanne". Unlike most garage jams, this tune is clean/polished but still cries a Standells-esque jangle. Look for this track b/w the (mostly) unheard "The Lonely Streets of Cairo" here . Seriously, "super limited" = only 200 copies. French Kissing - Oh Suzanne

Brand new track sent from over the pond from some brand new dudes. Just recently birthed into the world of myspace (like 3 days ago), UK's The Lawds aren't wasting any time in delivering a punch line. With influences like Chuck Berry, The Standells, and The Move well, you should already know how I feel about that. Got one of those feelings these guys won't have any trouble finding a label. After a few pops while I was back in Ontario, a friend of mine and I were having good discussion on music when we stumbled upon the topic of 60's garage bands . A number independent bands in the 60's such as The Count Five , The Creation, and The Music Machine were laying the ground work for what was later known as punk. It was their free spirited low production sound that helped influence a generation of New York punks after them such as Talking heads, The Pretenders and The Ramones. [...]
I'm behind on posting playlists (surprise surprise) so I thought I'd hit you with two in one post, along with oodles of mp3s. The June 29 show was guest DJ-ed by Jon Rogers (it was a Harry Nilsson-ish show to promote the Harry Nilsson tribute at Mercy Lounge) and the July 6 show was hosted by D. Patrick Rodgers of the Nashville Cream, who curated last Monday's 8 off 8th. You have until tonight to listen to an archive of last week's show, and remember you can always click the icon at the top of the right-hand column to listen [...]
