It's great to get away. Essential, refreshing, re-energizing, but never enough. Time away just reinforces the reality of what you're getting away from. And so you end up staring down the last few moments before returning to your day-to-day. Not that I'm complaining. I'm happy for the day-to-day I get to have today. But still there is a blueness, telegraphed in a face that stuggles to keep its muscles relaxed while concealing anxiety over rejoining its familiar environment. Which makes this as good a time as any to give oneself fully over to the near-ridiculous nitetime soul jazz cues of [...]
Unlike most classic/ famous tenor sax players, I have over a dozen "setups," or mouthpiece and reed combinations; my mood changes so much, and so often (family history of mood disorders, you see) that I have a ton of different sounds I want to emulate at any given time; no one sound, is enough in and of itself. I play tenor sax the most often (of the saxes, I mean) because to me it's the most expressive of the woodwinds; you can sound like an alto, a bari, or even a soprano if the mood strikes you; I [...]

Beautiful four CD-set retrospective of the label.

Although perhaps not as sexy a name in jazz circles as Blue Note or Verve , CTI Records has put out an outstanding catalog of contemporary jazz work over the years. To celebrate their 40th anniversary (CTI first spread its wings in 1970), the label is re-releasing six of its masterpieces, remastered, for the first time, this month. Also of note are two brand new releases: CTI Records: The Cool Revolution , a deluxe 4-CD multi-artist box set [...]

You all know the backstory, right? Nicci is mildly-to-moderately obsessed with this musical called Rent , which opened off Broadway in 1996, and made it to Broadway three months later. The show's creator died the night before the off-Broadway premiere. Even though Nicci was only eleven years old at the time, this story had influenced her immensely. I don't know why, she's not a squatter and she doesn't have AIDS...but, nevermind. I never saw the show on Broadway (I was more into...uh, baseball?), but my mother and sister did. My sister sang all the songs so I knew it [...]
Pat used to be my neighbor. Now he's a friend! Also, he's still Nicci's neighbor, so I see him pretty much daily. He's kind of an enigma, because he acts like he hates himself all the time and yet he's one of the most successful people I've ever met. Like, out of everybody I know who has a job or a vocation (ie lawyer, computer technician, teacher) he's probably the most successful at what he does. Still, I am amused to no end by his depression and foul mouthed antics. I couldn't think of anything to write about [...]
"I got more skills than John Han-got-cock" Das Efx - Dead Serious (East West, 1992)

Stanley Turrentine: Gibraltar & I Told Jesus From: Salt Song [ CTI , 1971] As the art and title suggest, Salt Song , tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's second album for CTI, is an earthy record; the album unfolds with a patient, almost tidal energy. It's a nice melange of Brazilian-influenced jazz, gospel, blues, and R&B with a touch of funk. With a decade of Blue Note works behind him, Turrentine was already an accomplished musician at this point in his career. As such, his song selection, arrangements, and [...]
