North Mississippi Allstars- The Meeting
The term "Superjam" can get thrown around a bit around here, but the minute I glanced at the listing of local players gathering around Luther Dickinson's 3-Night residency at the Maple Leaf Bar, it was apparent that some Jazz Fest After Dark-quality improvisational jam sessions were going to transpire in the familiar and friendly confines [...]

Dragon Smoke- Wild Injuns (The Mint- W. Hollywood, CA- Wed 12/7/11)
Thanks to Ali Kerr of Southern Exposure Photography for sharing her photos with us Like many local super groups, Dragon Smoke, a New Orleans group made up of Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Ivan Neville and Eric Lindell, formed in 2003 for a one-off Jazz Fest Super Jam gig and has played sporadically ever since. @LMBNOLA: Garage A Trois @ One Eyed Jacks 9/23/11

Garage a Trois - Howlin Wolf NOLA - 2011-05-04
Garage A Trois took the stage at One Eyed Jacks last night rockin' matching gray Puma track suits, setting the tone for the full-fledged weirdness that would ensue. One of the music universe's more intriguing collaborations, Garage a Trois meshes the musical stylings of four immensely talented musicians into something altogether unique, disruptive, and powerful. During the show, my buddy and I joked over PBRs that it would be impossible to label Garage A Trois' sound without throwing 'fusion' on at the end for good measure, and a day later I've accepted the fact that it would be a disservice [...]

LMB NYC: This Week's Concert Calendar – Aug 30 – Sept 5

LMB NYC: This Week's Concert Calendar – Aug 30 – Sept 5 Karl Denson | photo by whitperson Although Hurricane Irene ended up being rather wimpy - considering all of the preparations and dire warnings - it certainly screwed up a lot of NYC concerts and festivals this past weekend. Brooklyn Bowl had to postpone BP's Saturday show, so I was denied what would have certainly been a raging, late-night throwdown (including a fist-pumping "Inside the Tinman" according to the band ). Here's hoping that the weather clears up nicely this week and lets the show(s) go on. Speaking of [...]

Tonight in L.A.: Guards/Cults, Cold Cave/Austra, Cloud Control, Correatown, Meiko, Public Jones

Austra - Lose It (Official Video)
[Happy birthday to Pete Yorn, 37 years old today. Here's what's up tonight ...] Your midweek mix: ► It's a homecoming of sorts for Richie James Follin, the O.C. native who fronts (fronted?) the Willowz for four albums and now lives on the other coast making doo wop-meets-Kinks music as Guards . Guards have more substance in the first 2 minutes of "Resolution of One" than Cults have on their entire major-label album (and Follin played in Cults, with his sister Madeline, as [...]

Save Porter Batiste Stoltz: A Throwdown at The Howlin' Wolf

And so the folks at SavePBS.org and The Howlin' Wolf have put together a serious evening of music to help with the cause, this Friday May 27th. On the bill is a who's who of local guys (including John Gros, Ivan Neville, Johnny Vidacovich, Tony Hall and Billy Iuso…), as well as Stoltz's I-12 All-Stars, Porter's Runnin' Pardners… and the kicker, The Funky Meters with Stanton Moore on drums (Russell Batiste is out on tour with Joe Krown and Walter "Wolfman" Washington). All proceeds go towards the group's legal bills and will be a HUGE help for these guys.

Artist of the Month: Marco Benevento (PART ONE)

Marco Benevento : The Real Morning Party Video
You are doing 10 shows over the next 10 days in 7 different venues including a handful of late, late night (which is a ton but Stanton Moore is doing 27) – Not only how do you do it, but how does he do it? Seems like a good tour manager is a must to pull something like that off. Marco Benevento: I do it with the help of a combination of things – The Gris Gris Man Playin' with Johnny V and Georgey P at the Maple Leaf…in our pajamas! And Yerba Mate Stanton does [...]

Late Night Spotlight: The Boom Boom Room Presents! Boogalooin' at Jazz Fest 2011

The good folks over there at The Boom Boom Room have done it again. 2011′s edition of Boogalooin' at Jazz Fest (in it's 11th year) is a prime example of the collaborative spirit that brings together so many world class musicians, to late night gigs that can only been seen and heard in the haunts of New Orleans. This year they bring back (among many) supergroups FREQUINOX, The Whip! and Dragon Smoke for some mid-week action HQ'd at Frenchmen Street's Blue Nile (Dragon Smoke will be at One Eyed Jacks). We are also very excited about tonights Stanton Moore Trio [...]

Jimi Hendrix Tribute Showcases Members of Grateful Dead, DMB, P-Funk on Jam Cruise

Jimi Hendrix Tribute Showcases Members of Grateful Dead, DMB, P-Funk on Jam Cruise Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News One of the many aspects unique to Jam Cruise -- apart from the awesome fact that it's a traveling music festival which takes place on a cruise ship in the Caribbean -- is the sheer number of impromptu collaborations, guest appearances and all-star jams that seem to happen spontaneously throughout the journey. When the Brooklyn-based Some Cat From Japan announced their appearance on this year's cruise, it was [...]

Tour Dates: Down On The Corner

Cornershop sure don't like to be rushed when it comes to recording albums, taking nearly eight years in between releases and putting out only three records in the last 13 years. The UK-based band, whose latest - Judy Sucks A Lemon for Breakfast - made my Top 6 Of The First 6 , also like to take their time when it comes to touring the US, having last played shows in the states all the back in 2002. Cornershop will look to remedy their lack of live appearances here with a short nine-date [...]

Garage a Trois 12/19/09 at Bowery Ballroom, NYC

Garage a Trois 12/19/09 at Bowery Ballroom, NYC On a wintry Saturday night here in NYC, I was lucky enough to catch the latest version of Garage a Trois at the Bowery Ballroom. The group - which in the past has featured Stanton Moore, Skerik, Mike Dillon and Charlie Hunter – is currently touring with Marco Benevento in place of Hunter, making for a killer combo. Although I thought I'd miss Hunter's patented 8-string guitar work, Marco was certainly a suitable alternative for handling his normal duties. Unfortunately, the winter storms over the weekend caused some travel issues for [...]

New DVD: Marco Benevento and Friends – Live in NYC, The Sullivan Hall Residency

Back in early 2008, Marco Benevento set-up a Thursday night residency at Sullivan Hall that featured a series of killer combos and collaborations including: Andrew Barr, Billy Martin, Bobby Previte, Brad Barr, DJ Olive, G. Calvin Weston, Reed Mathis, Joe Russo, John Ellis, Kaki King, Marc Friedman, Skerik, Stanton Moore, and Steven Bernstein. Shine A Light Productions captured it all on film and just recently completed a DVD of the events entitled "Marco Benevento (& Friends): Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency." Here's a little video teaser they put together for the [...]
