A collection of Talking Heads covers in honor of David Byrne's 61st birthday.
I almost cried when I finally found a super-clean copy of this record. I've been lusting after "top copies" of the Staples' Vee Jay LPs for years, and I am one-third (or maybe one-quarter if you count the compilation) of the way to my goal. My affection for the Staples' stems from my obsession with [...]
I have to hear this every now and then...

I might as well get this out of the way quickly, because every year some idiot shows up here thinking the views expressed in these posts truly reflect my honest opinions of the artists I choose to critique. I would hope people don't take this too seriously, but then again last year I was called [...]
• A mysterious "beam" reported by the National Weather Service interrupted its radar service in Illinois this week. The "beam" has been puzzling experts because they are unsure what exactly it is. My guess? A laser beam. I mean, what other kinds of beams are there? I-Beams? Neutrino beams? Those are…something, right? I feel like [...]
Uh huh, it's gonna be that kind of party: Staple Stingers '85 rundown of Talking Heads' "Slippery People" - the club mix. While Pops is obviously the man here - his vocals leading the call and response - it's Mavis, particularly her scat at 4:59 that will likely leave you reaching for the rewind. The [...]
• Some kind of…monster…washed up on the shores of Cape Cod this past weekend. It's got the head of a…something, and the body of a…something. Some people think its a water lizard or a malnourished dolphin. Others say it's just a hoax. Because every summer at every shore point on the East Coast people claim that [...]

Keeping with the good vibes. Here's one in the proud tradition of elemental sound-choruses that perfectly punctuate righteous verses. Good to remember that you don't have to say anything to get exactly the right thing across. A little dose of Staples Singers will always make you feel like an upright human being. The Staples Singers - Oh La De Da
First families of American music? While a number come immediately to mind, none more so than the Carter Family and Staples Singers. Truly lasting pillars did they build. I spent part of Sunday night in an ocean of Staples related videos and performances, but it's this one, the group doing "Wade In The Water" live [...]
Yesterday, I received a message from an old high school friend. We shared a lot of great times, but one of the greatest was the afternoon we spent at Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville, Maine, watching Martin Scorsese's concert film The Last Waltz. While it's pretty much impossible to overstate the importance of the stars who made appearances at the [...]

Our thoughts and prayers go out this weekend to 62 year old Australian-born pop superstar Robin Gibb, founding member and long-time lead singer of disco trailblazers the Bee Gees, who is reportedly fighting for his life in a London hospital after a long struggle with cancer. In his honor, we're recovering a June 2008 feature which mines my origin as an audiophile and pays tribute to the seminal work of the Bee Gees through an expanded set of folk-tuned coverage. Gibb and his brothers may have spent their careers on the far end of [...]
My head exploded this morning when a "friend" (according to the Internet) posted a link to an article on Facebook… on Facebook! Isn't that just the most meta thing ever? What's more, the title of the piece, "Facebook may not be so friendly for those with low self-esteem" fascinated me. Why did this friend of [...]

Rex The Triangle strikes again, with an edit of The Staple Singers " Slippery People " . The mysterious producer from Chicago is threatening to send a rocket up the arse of ' Nu-Disco ' and make it sound fun and interesting again. That piano-plugin everybody uses loads is nowhere to be heard.. You've been warned. The Staple Singers - Slippery People (Rex The Triangle edit) [ M ] [...]
It's been an adventurous weekend. Two birthday parties on back-to-back nights (I remained sober! Give me my 48-hour chip!). Pretty much everyone I know was drunk from 5pm on Friday until, well, they're still drunk right now. And none of them have to work tomorrow so they'll probably keep raging through the night! I just [...]
