I read quite a few of the advance reviews for Starkey's new album Ear Drums and Black Holes and many of them left me confused about what the album would be like. There is a certain number that revolve around similar criticisms: that it's too long and too scattershot. After spending time with it recently, I've come to the conclusive it's not either of those things. Rather, it's relentlessly assertive. Each one of these tracks is saying something in a loud voice. They stand up and put themselves out there as individuals. Perhaps this is why [...]

The Noise Collective has been going now for almost 4 months, and so something of a look back at the tracks we've brought to your ears so far is probably in order. We've had the big names, the up and comings and the almost unknowns, but the one thing they've shared is a sort of, dare [...]

As a new generation of Grime producers emerges emboldened by Dubstep and Funky, the genre's emcees are still facing the same old dilemmas. Stuck in between crossover aspirations and a desire to remain hardcore, Grime emcees remain almost as out of place in today's pop landscape as they were when the genre first began emerging in Garage's wake. Still, good tunes abound and with the cognoscenti tired of jump-up Dubstep's incessant wobble and Funky remaining either too feminine or too experimental for the hardcore, Grime is proving resilient. I'll save the detailed scene spotting for those [...]

Photo courtesy of Backspin Promotions Interview conducted by Andrew Ryce American artist, producer, DJ, remixer, singer, label manager and now singer Starkey (aka P.J. Geissinger), is one of the biggest names in electronic music right now, heading up the Streetbass crew and sound in his home base of Philadelphia, PA. A North American ambassador for UK-dominated sounds, his music encompasses hip-hop, grime, dubstep, house, and everything between, all united by an unmatched ear for melodies and colourful, almost psychedelic sounds. He's been getting tons of attention from all [...]

We've been absolutely loving the latest Numan release Skull Crusher , especially the remix from Capricorn One aka Elucid and El Carnicero . They've taken the original Dubstep track and flipped it into the kind of pimped out space age sounds for your lowriding hover car that almost feels like hearing Kool Keith's Dr Octagon album for the first time. You can pick up a copy of the EP over at [...]

Resident Advisor podcast » RA.204 Starkey - 2010.04.26 Philly's purveyor of "street bass" mixes it up on this week's RA podcast. When you think of grime and dubstep, Pennsylvania isn't one of the the first places that springs to mind, but Paul Geissinger AKA Starkey has been doing his utmost to create his own take on the sound in his home city of Philadelphia. Having been turned on to UK garage while he was studying in London at the start of the millennium, he continued to keep abreast [...]

We've got another three pages of reviews (and we tried to cut it down, we swear!), and that's not even including the big artist LPs released this month: check our reviews of Ikonika's Contact, Love, Want, Have , Starkey's Ear Drums and Black Holes , and Vex'd Cloud Seed . After you've read those, don't forget to check [...]

Uffie is sort of stuck in Kid Sister-limbo too me, her debut album "Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans" should have dropped ages ago. Like when 'Pop the Glock' was HOT and fresh back in 2005-2006, when she was that huge MySpace-find-phenomenon and when Lily Allen's debut dropped on the world like a bomb. Sadly for Uffie it didn't. Instead, the smash hit was re-released last year with a bunch of remixes no one really cared about and that album will finally drop the 31st of May (8th of June in the US). But even if Uffie's magic has faded quite [...]
