The truth is coming out...I'm list-averse. Shopping or to-do, I just don't do 'em. And the finale of another year won't kick me in gear. But I do have some year-end cappers in the form of my one pick for record of the year and one for the release that I actually listened to the most. Intellectually, both could be miles apart. But are they? The actual release most listened to in '09 truly breaks two 'cardinal rules' in a manner. Firstly, the thing came out in August '08. Secondly, I own [...]
I mean, I dig Dee and the boys, but c'mon. We're not gonna take it is right. Anyway, I was emailing with Ross from yesterday's 'First Date' and he tells me he's enjoying the 'Bullshit' feature (which really should be a weekly thing, right?) So, he shoots me this: "I am actually a big fan of Aimee Mann's Christmas show she usually does at Birchmere around Christmas, and her Christmas album. She is my favorite singer/songwriter of all time, and I own all of her albums. But it's the fact that [...]
Four times a day, often at half hour stretches...there's plenty of time for reflection and the mind to wander. A song to sing. A record to recall. Pete just sniffs along too. The perfect spot is here – no, there. Here – no, there. And no perceived lack of shame to be doing it outdoors at the height of the evening's rush hour. Business men wind their way around Pete's business. I recall my dad saying goodbye to Pete the morning he left for the hospital before his heart operation. 'I'll be back...' he said in [...]
I'm having conversations with my Dad lately despite the fact that he passed away three years ago last week. I imagine catching up and filling him in on world events and the like. On my mom and her health and the dog he adored that now lives with me. It's cruelly ironic that when he was actually around, sometimes weeks would go by before I'd pick up the phone for a hello. He'd say, 'Where have you BEEN—I was worried!" And I'd say, "Oh, I'm FINE...why would you WORRY?!" "When you're a parent," he'd say often, [...]

Startling Electric remind a little bit(in all the best ways) of Guided By Voices, another Midwestern lo-fi power pop band. But SE's influences go much deeper. As I was hanging out listening to their recently re-issued 2006 release 'Clouded Staircase' last night, I heard the late 60's/early 70's pop influences(The Beach Boys and The Zombies sring to mind) all over the record. Even the cover art of the CD looks like it was plucked from that golden age of music. I am gonna share two tracks...I love the record so much, and I think these two really showcase [...]

Zombies On Parade - Greg Camp Mummy Beach - Hot Lava Black Ghost/Black Girl - Starling Electric The good folks at Bar/None did the work for me today, with three spooky little songs, all good and not cheesy haunted-house sounding. Although there would be nothing wrong with that (but really. How many times can you hear Monster Mash?) It's nice working on a college campus on a day like today, even though I got almost nothing done [...]

FEATURED REVIEW Vivian Girls Vivian Girls - (In the Red) September 30 Rating 82% Vivian Girls - "Where Do You Run To" - mp3 Joining label-mates Cheap Time, Jay Reatard and King Khan, the Vivian Girls add another addition to the amazing crop of lo-fi punk infused rock released in 2008. Whereas the former artists' music comes off aggressive and in your face, the Vivian Girls' songs have a bouncy melodic nature to them, making them sound more like tiny pop [...]

Before " Power Pop Day " is officially over, we thought it might be cool to point you in the direction of some new kids on the block, who not only swipe moves and give nods to the power pop greats of yesteryear, but are also paving the road to the genre's bright future. Also, we know that p-pop kind of gets a bad rap, mostly for being a little bit lame, and a lot bit cheesy. What we tried to bring you here are people doing something a little different with the formula than just ripping off the Knack [...]
Yeahhh big release week. Something like 85 releases. We've been buzzing about The Showdown for a while now, so you should probably check that out. I'm looking forward to Lykke Li 's twee-pop deliciousness and the Fiery Furnaces 2-disc live album. Also, The Toadies are still alive? Someone tell me what that's about. Oh, and that Lee "Scratch" Perry album was produced by Andrew W.K. so it should be... interesting. :: 31Knots , Worried Well (Polyvinyl) [...]

This was a lovely summer weekend of champion gyro-eating at the Greek Festival (and watching the dancers click their heels about in traditional garb), summery new Japanese-abstract print bedding , and some indoor thrashing of the Rock Band drum pads. Pretty soon I'm clearly going to be an expert; for now it would help if I could follow along with which side of the screen I was supposed to be playing to. Summer is also bursting with juicy tunes: Momentary [...]
