I'm not going to dig up the old tumblr that talked about my invention docent repellent spray. I would like to say that it chaps my hide that Stars Like Fleas didn't get the stinkeye from at least one docent. Docents be slacking! Stars Like Fleas: I Was Only Dancing. mp3

I'd bought this at a Salvation Army maybe a year ago and never listened to it until yesterday. Weird, pastoral, glitchy stuff. A lot of long tracks that blend into one another. Moody. GOOD MOODY. Strange vocals. Worst album description ever. Message me for FLAC. I LIKE IT IN 320 @ MediaFire BUY IT /// READ ABOUT IT Tracklisting (awesome tracks are asterisk'd) 1. let cedar rain 2. as hard as you want 3. third night, wisconsin * 4. on a [...]

In 2009, Hometapes aptly demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with and a label to keep an eye on. They packed the year with great releases, some of which are likely to appear on my best of 2009 list, slated to go live late next week. To celebrate the holidays, they've done two things worth noting. First is Eight Days Of Christmas , which features Christmas tunes from eight Hometapes bands. Second is a Holiday sampler, which arrived in the form of a cassette via mail on Friday. [...]

I meant to drape this little bit of tinsel a long time ago, but I'm space-y as Kevin this time of year and vulnerable to long bouts of eating, drinking and overall indulging. For instance, last night Penny and I indulged in a metric ton of taco chips and watched movies. Normally I'd stop eating at some point but HEY, IT'S THE HOLIDAYS. Hometapes know, perhaps more than anyone, that Christmas only comes but once a year, and must be celebrated to the utmost. Hence the creation of the Eight Days Of Hometapes series, eight Christmas/holiday tunes by [...]

Jandek is the musical project of an outsider musician who operates out of Houston, Texas. Since 1978, Jandek has self-released 60 albums of unusual, often emotionally dissolute folk and blues songs without ever granting more than the occasional interview or providing any biographical information. Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues music, often using an open and unconventional chord structure. Jandek's music is unique, but the lyrics closely mirror the country blues and folk traditions of East Texas. The name "Jandek" is most commonly used to refer specifically to the main—often sole—performer, rather [...]

hometapes : Stars Like Fleas performing in NY tonight — at the Museum of Modern Art! So say the Fleas: From 5:30-8:00, we will perform a 3-part set-slash-site-specific composition, including a 25-ish piece choir-slash-human-sampler made up of Brooklyn musicians and friends whom we admire-slash-wink at. We'd put them in the case next to the Dieter Rams SK-4 record player and the Bic lighter , to be sure. And the rest of you lucky (and mostly Canadian) friends can catch [...]

Paul Shambroom - Missile, First Baptist Church [Covington, OH] (2008) More Great Songs of 2008 continue through the weekend... including a cultural cornerstone covered by the Rock-afire Explosion , a breath of fresh air from a young Nashville country singer, a song I heard everywhere I went in 2008, the new sounds of a classic indie favourite, an experimental highlight from last year's Forward Music [...]

Similar to NY contemporaries Stars Like Fleas and Twi The Humble Feather (who we also like ), La Strada has an uncanny ability to funnel the romance of old-world instrumentation through new-world amplification. With soaring vocal harmonies, accordion, and string-driven melodies revved up on rock 'n' roll, La Strada transports you to the hills of the Balkans, a street corner in Paris, and back home beneath a Brooklyn skyline. Frontman, songwriter and former aspiring astronaut, James Craft, was born in France and [...]

Coming in from a bitterly cold winter night to the very warm and very dark Le Poisson Rouge felt a lot like tiptoeing into a tropical cave, if tropical caves were filled with avant-garde rock music. I was persuaded to go to this high-rent stretch of Bleecker Street for a show billed as an East Coast vs. West Coast battle between Stars Like Fleas and Au , two avant-noise-pop bands. I'm not sure which of these terrific bands took top honors in their acoustic brawl, but it's worth noting that Le Poisson Rouge did win [...]

Au at Le Poisson Rouge (01/24/09) Stars Like Fleas at Le Poisson Rouge (01/24/09) Photos : Jon Klemm Here's what NPR's Bob Boilen had to say about Au 's record Verbs : I was sifting through stacks of cd's the other day hoping to find a gem. After about 120 cd's or so this appeared. It took me on a journey... there was joy and adventure. I'd never knew where it [...]

Written by Fense It's the end of the year and I'm rapidly trying to catch up on and wrap up all loose ends. My promo rack is still out of control, as is my inbox. And my 2009 resolution will be the same as 2008: keep up with the inbox and promo rack. Hopefully I'll be able to stick with it this time around. As I hastily try to pare these two things down, I keep stumbling across new items that slipped by unnoticed, like Stars Like Fleas ( MySpace [...]

Brooklyn's Stars Like Fleas are itching to get back out there and continue the slow, steady pan they began with this spring's release of their Ken Burns Effect LP. So they're hitting the road for a late-summer jaunt, to be followed by a smattering of shows off in the fall. First on the list is a September 10 gig at the Bug Jar in Rochester, New York. read more
