A spot of computer troubles have temporarily postponed what was intended to be a comprehensive survey of this year's newly released single-artist Holiday albums. But on this day in 1933, the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was passed and ratified, ending national Prohibition, and paving the way for a return to the Christmas tradition of drinking with good company. And so a hastily-constructed thematic feature is born. Join us, as we lift a glass to the season and the day with a decidedly mixed-bar set of songs celebrating holiday drinking. [...]
Grant Singer, who's directed videos for the likes of DIIV and Sky Ferreira lately, turns his lens on empty and liminal spaces in these visuals for Gambles’ "Trust"—lurking in thresholds and gazing out of bright, ... read more
Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive Norman Wong Diamond Rings has really blown up this year. His latest album Free Dimensional features sultry synths and crazy-catchy pop hooks. Now you can check out how the Canadian artist rocks out on stage in this performance clip of "I'm Just Me." "This video was shot at La Tulipe in Montreal, Quebec as a part of the Pop Montreal festival upon the [...]
[Photos by acidjack] The Brooklyn band Starring , fairly new darlings of the avant garde Northern Spy label, have made significant sonic evolutions since their 2010 release Wife of God. With the addition of Matt Mehlan - best known for his work as Skeletons - to the already-talented roster of players, the band's sound has moved away from their more kraut and punk-leaning earlier material toward the type of longer-form prog-psych compositions that Mehlan is known for. This year's ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ (a keyboard's worth of an album title), [...]

On his debut EP The Stars , 21-year-old London producer Catching Flies specializes in the kind of mysterious downtempo vibe that, with its pitch-shifted vocals and dreamy new age-meets-electronic meandering, feels like the best type of ear hole massage one could have when laid up in the house on a chill, rainy afternoon. While his latest creation, a remix of Jill Scott 's 2004 single "Golden" , isn't an official part of that mini-set, it would comfortably fit in as a bonus cut add-on, Flies taking the original's sunny [...]

Frank Yang It's probably a reach to think that Sloan had some sort of master plan for the past couple years that would pull their career from the respectable but not overly remarkable holding pattern that it'd been in for the past few albums and make them both exciting and relevant again, but that's pretty much what they've managed to do. Their twentieth anniversary as a band last year was kept from being a one-way trip down memory lane thanks to The Double Cross , arguably their best album this century [...]

It's hard to tell if the past year has marked the end of the lo-fi/no-fi era, or if we've just been enjoying a momentary lapse in that sound's near-domination of the indie music scene. Either way, it's clear that bands aren't satisfied to just rock out, throw some fuzz all over everything and call it good. Case in point, Starred. On Prison to Prison they mix and match, throwing distortion out generously while at the same time refining the mix when it comes to Liza Thorn's vocals. What emerges is a distinctive idiom, one that draws as much from grunge [...]
Who are you and where are you from? I’m Patty McGee, drummer in Stars and I’m from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Who are your favourite artists from your hometown? Tim Hecker , Gambletron , AroarA , Uncle Bad Touch , Pigeon Phat . What’s it really like touring? It's like being a claustrophobic potato most of the time. It can also be like being in a submarine that shoots torpedoes of drunken [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Norman Wong When Stars new album The North came out earlier this fall, outspoken singer Torquil Campbell made any number of political pronouncements to the press, right up to warning about Canada's creeping fascism . So it was a little surprising to press play and hear none of those opinions made their way into the album's songs. [...]
Toronto indie pop band Stars are out with their sixth full length, The North. The five piece continue their brand of smart, earnest pop with a renewed focus and enthusiasm. They backed off some of the heavy keyboards and synthesizers that dominated their previous album, The Five Ghosts, instead settling back into more subtle and dreamy sound that uses synths not as pop décor but to create mood and atmosphere. Lead vocalists Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan’s remain in fine form, trading off songs and joining together nicely on the duet, “Walls.” Recorded in Montreal, the other standouts include "Hold [...]
