" The thing would suddenly stand before him, strange and terrifying, demanding that he name it and name it justly and be judged for the name he gave it ." ~ Flannery O'Connor, The Violent Bear It Away Louisville's State Champion are out to name some shit on their second official release, Deep Shit . And they did that shit fucking justice. (Be aware that I'm going to continue cursing because this is some badass fucking rock-roll garage-barn hacksaw-kickback shit, and good rock and roll turns "cursing" [...]

State Champion has a new record called Deep Shit out on Sophomore Lounge, and the band is playing an album release show this week with Obits and Bottomless Pit . It's this Thursday (Oct. 20) at the old Pour Haus (now Club 21), and I'm not sure if the place will be standing after this hootenanny. In honor of the auspicious occasion, we're giving away a pair of tickets and the new State Champ LP on vinyl to one lucky [...]
Oh to be as drunk and free and blessed with musical genius as the cats in State Champion , who toss off lines like "Lord can't you take the back porch to the front of the house" and "I still smell her hair on the horizon sometimes..." like it's no big thing, like pulling Universal Truths out of your one good pocket, blowing the lint off of them and tossing them on the glass patio table littered with 49 sticky playing cards, empty packs of Winstons, spent spliffs and all the bottle caps up to but not including that [...]

I read a post over at Songs Illinois with news that State Champion have a new record out this month, as a big fan of their last album I'm looking forward to this one, I picked up the vinyl last time around and it's had plenty of airplay at Beat Surrender HQ. Red Dog and Black Brick Here's a track from the new album to enjoy, you can listen to a few more from the album here . Homepage

Everything about State Champion screams loose. From the messed up photos on their site to the cover art of the new record to the music contained therein - a raucous blend of punk fueled rock and experimental folk. I wrote about the band here way back when and still remember and return to their music. The new record is just that a 123 vinyl that comes out Oct 4 and is distributed by the fine folks at Drag City. For some reason this band and in fact the whole roster at the their [...]

K Tranza / JEFF The Brotherhood / CY Barkley / State Champion Is there a better lineup than this? Let me think. NO! If you think there is a better place to be on Sunday night then you are sorely mistaken. Every one of these bands will make you forget about all your worries and cares, and will ruin your entire week because your week won't be as good as this show. Sorry to break that to you, but someone had to tell you. So if you don't go to this, it's on you. That would [...]

I think June 19th is Father's Day, right? Or maybe it's the 12th? Shit man, I have too many dates to keep up with. Well whatever, look... Nashville's mighty motherfucking JEFF The Brotherhood with an assortment of relatively heavy, fine local artists, including Temporary Residence signatories Coliseum and country thrashers State Champion . Take your father regardless. The melee happens at famed watering hole Magbar in Old Louisville. While not traditionally a music venue, the good folks at Cropped Out don't really like booking shows in traditional spaces, which I can appreciate. Actually, [...]

>> There are a number of bands right now forcing us to confront the fact that we do in fact like (some) rock music with horns. But we have to say most surprising of the lot is Little Gold 's "Mike Swan." We've written previously about being overjoyed that one former member of Meneguar was doing something that excited us, that member being Brooklyn-based Little Gold 's fronter Christian DeRoeck. Mr. DeRoeck's current rootsier rock act hews most closely to whatever we can refer to as a Meneguar legacy, although Meneguar certainly didn't have [...]

Mentioned State Champion a few times on Beat Surrender, well Slithering Beast's main man Nick Dittmeier is a mate of the band and that was enough to spark my interest, Slithering Beast started out as a solo project for the Louisville, KY singer-songwriter. Joined by band members Mark Sieckman (drums), Paul Dittmeier (pedal steel, dobro), Alex Plamp (guitar) and Matt K (bass) they have a new EP out available through Bandcamp, a quintet of tracks showcasing their own brand of Americana. Homepage [...]

Local music champion and pop culture writer, Peter Berkowitz, is now booking music for Sunergos Coffee (the one in Beechmont, yes there are nice things happening south of the Highlands) through the new year.
