This looks superb. It's a pity it wasn't physically printed but regardless, State's Faces of 2012 digital magazine is a sexy forward look at 20 of Ireland's most promising new bands with original photography where possible. My Mmoths interview is in there too. Check out the Soundcloud compilation of the acts after the jump. The whole thing was designed by Simon Roche but do pay attention to the State photographers.

State Magazine's third annual Faces Of the Year series which picks out a selection of new Irish bands to watch kicked off today. There will be 20 artists covered accompanied with original photography from the State team where possible. The week will culminate in a mixtape and a digital magazine version on Friday. My interview with Jack Colleran aka MMOTHS (all caps and changed from MOTHS due to another band name) went live this morning. Have a read.
Dublin-based band Madu, fronted by Irish/Malaysian brother and sister duo Salim and Aminah, are coming to The Workman's Club on October 2nd to play a set that steers away from typical dub soul or reggae arrangements to create a psychedelic roots music imbued with mystery and nostalgia. "Madu is the musical communication between my brother and I built on our different creative expressions", says Aminah. "The idea of collaborating together on an album occured in 2000 and life in all its ways brought us from that point to this". After 10 years of working on their repertoire and [...]

10:41 PM Sean: So these end of year lists I keep hearing about do we need em? 10:42 PM Karl: Need is a strong word. They do some fairly useful work though. They define what a person/magazine/site's taste was for a year, and they tell you about shit you missed. 10:43 PM Sean: I do like the shit-you-missed bit, but the What Was Good This Year bit can unintentionally be a bit sinister. 10:44 PM like, it can turn into an obscurity competition, or an I-love-everything-me contest or, to go a bit more local, a giant [...]
People should probably go to this. If you don't, I'll be very cross - much like the Papa Bear in Goldilocks, only I have neither porridge nor a fanciful bed. Shocking really. Personally I blame the architects of modern society for the fact that I have simple toasted crustations for breakfast every morning... neatly layered with a modicum of butter, washed down by several mouthfuls of
The wonderful chaps from State Magazine have recently being running a spate of gigs, unhumourlessly titled "State Vs..." whereby they do stuff with eachother that means sound gets played, people go "yay", alcohol gets consumed and some chap called Peter gets taken away in an ambulance to have his stomach pumped (again). In order to facilitate such unholy debauchery, the Mercantile on Dame St has

It starts at 8.30, oh, and did I say, free in! The three excellent bands playing on the night are: Jogging We Cut Corners [...]

The death knell has come. Ireland's best contemporary music publication State Magazine will no longer be released in physical form. This is sad, sad news, as it was so much better than Hot Press . That and I never got the chance to do a guest article for them! State will continue its online role, so that is a huge bonus. However, my bus journeys to and from work will never be the same. The magazine will still be available in online format, so at least that's something. Full information: [...]

You can either view it online for free, or pick up an actual copy from their list of stockists here: http://www.state.ie/blog/stock ists/ or read it online here: http://www.state.ie/blog/state -issue-7-the-details/ I won't be doing anything for the rest of the day so!
Lots of rumours have gone around recently about the future of State Magazine , however the real truth has finally come to light. The magazine that features the wonderful insights of our good friend Nialler, is due to follow in the footsteps of Analogue , and be available free of charge. Now this is great news for the music lover, but what will it mean for the magazine itself? Will they still be able to afford the same great writing team? Or will those writers move on to newer pastures? Well, we'll just have to wait [...]

The crowd at Oxegen 2008. While camped out at Oxegen over the weekend, The State team grabbed a couple of radio presenters and a journalist/blogger to join them in taking stock of the festival thus far. Our discussion took in: Oxegen as the new European festival, the line-up's good and bad points, someone defending the Counting Crows, why nobody turned up for Richard Hawley, Paul Heaton and Cat Power, Aphex Twin's mental set on Friday, a look at how the new and Irish bands got on and the inevitable, Amy Winehouse. Around [...]

Slash in Guitar Hero III Our podcast this time around focuses on features in State Issue 03 such as Music in Video Games, the story of Hope Promoters and the Fence Collective's fifth intimate Homegame festival in Fife, Scotland. Joining us this time around: Adrian Crowley - Irish singer and songwriter who played at the Homegame Festival and wrote a diary report for State on his experiences. He also tells us about bellydancers and a secret venue he's thinking of using for his [...]
