I bet two crisp, pristine, ink-smelling fresh five dollar bills that if Pac-Man were a real person, he'd have his own political party. He would have no reason to reach out to the washed, bipedal, human masses with his platforms based on tax rebates for pellet harvesters, better quality mazes for low income families, and improved border security through federally funded ghostbusters. None of the established North American parties would ever add such policies to their agendas, so he would have to go it alone and establish his own party to advance the very limited [...]

Central Square, Cambridge: Saturday, June 7th at the Middle East WHY YOU NEED TO GO: Saturday marks the first visit back for the incredible Pela since singer Billy McCarthy sustained a serious hand injury while playing on stage earlier this year. The stage accident took place during a show at Schuba's in Chicago on Feb 29th - just two shows after Pela's stunner of a performance last appearance in Boston (Feb 26th) - ( a show which they headlined coincidently with Boston's Static of the [...]

We have been sifting through a ton of female vocals lately. Along with Blake Hazard from The Submarines , Jen Johnson from Static of the Gods has really peaked our interest. In the forefront of a trio of musicians based in Boston, Johnson's vocals certainly whet the pop-rock tempo that Mike Latulippe (drums) and Ben Voskerritchian (bass/guitar) provide. The group's firm handle on poppy singing, marketable rock chords and highly professional recordings make for a must listen to for anyone who enjoys Rilo Kiley, Jimmy Eat World and The Pixies. Static [...]

Sometimes I lose CD's. Even ones I like. I listened to Peluche , the new EP from Boston's own Static Of The Gods weeks ago. I thought it was great. It reminded me of fellow Boston rockers, The Sheila Divine mixed with B-more's Avec . I actually left the three song EP in my CD player for three days. And then I'm pretty sure my car ate it. I can't blame my car, as it is a delicious EP, but yesterday I managed to dig it out from [...]
The Peace Sign turns 50 years old this week. And there's considerable cause to celebrate, lament, cherish and recollect the power of this very 20th century popular symbol and what it has meant to our modern culture and the world of music. The symbol was launched into the popular arena by anti-nuclear activists in England some five decades ago but the peace sign was soon adopted by a troupe of international anti-war protesters . By the end of the century the anti-war use of the sign was almost a working but dusted relic, but the common [...]

BOSTON ROCK REPORT: Static of the Gods: One to Watch in 2008 When Static of the Gods takes the stage in Portland, Oregon tomorrow night - they bring a little Boston with them. This most-promising band have a special something - a talent level, their tight play, an enigmatic charm - that lends me to believe they will be the next Boston band to make a mark on the national level. When I [...]

Today's 5 is a little delayed by my hectic day not helped by the bit of snow today on the east coast, digging out now from under the backlog of music in my inbox with a variety pack for you. Let me know what you think. Smash? or Trash? Leave a comment. 1 : Ben Kamen - Clouds And Snow Buy Dreams LTD Edition 2 : Lipstik - Call The Doctor [...]
You might remember me talking about Boston based band Static of the Gods back here . If not, they're group that carries on the Boston indie tradition started back in the days of the Fort Apache recording studio with bands like Throwing Muses , Belly , Juliana Hatfield , and others. Anyway, this post isn't about the past, it's about the present. Static of the Gods just released a new video for a new track, Peluche . Check out both the audio and [...]

Pinback / Autumn Of The Seraphs ( Touch And Go ) I find the sonics of Pinback fascinating. Rob Crow's songs always seem to be on the verge of seething with tension and anxiety, but they're always presented in these meticulously produced packages. The vocals are almost zen-like in their serenity, even when he's raging at the mic, and the guitars - my latent guitar geek would love to know how they make a tone that I'd otherwise consider to be overly-clean, [...]
Where's the tambo? Janelle Rogers of Green Light GO astutely noticed I have a groovy little thing going for The Brian Jonestown Massacre (see here) and wondered if I might like to hear 101 Tambourines, the new CD by The Dilettantes, the San Francisco group fronted by TBJM tambourine man Joel Gion. I had enviously (but gratefully) sent you to a link of their "Marzipan" and am glad to be able to

The torch has been passed: the Boston indie power-pop torch that is. It started with The Pixies in the 80's, then Juliana Hatfield and Belly and all the incarnations its members moved on to in the 90's. Now it's Static of the Gods ' turn. Although the band is now based out of Beantown, ironically none of the members actually grew up in Massachusetts (although bassist/guitarist Ben Voskeritchian was technically born in Boston, he grew up in Richmond, VA). Jen Johnson, lead vocalist for the threesome, actually started [...]
