Filed under: News Stuart Mostyn, Redferns When Gerry Rafferty , the Scottish singer and songwriter behind the hits 'Baker Street' and 'Stuck in the Middle With You,' died last year at the age of 63, he was engaged to marry a woman named Ezina Fuschini. Unfortunately, the Stealers Wheel founder had written his will before meeting her in 2008, and as a result, she received no part of his $1.9 million estate. [...]

Gerry Rafferty: Baker Street [ purchase ] Stealers Wheel: Outside Looking In [ purchase ] $125,000 a year in royalties can buy an awful lot of booze. Thanks to "Baker Street", Gerry Rafferty never needed to do anything else after 1978... but drink. He passed away in January of 2010 from liver cancer after spending his last two decades seeped in alcohol. Among his final performances was a five day drinking binge at a five star London hotel which led to both his hospitalization and newspaper [...]

"Stuck In The Middle With You" - Stealers Wheel (1978) "trying to make some sense of it all..."
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right... Stuck In The Middle With You.

One of the side benefits of Quentin Tarentino's movies is that his soundtracks are also almost invariably awesome. He's got a decided soul / funk / hip-hop bent, and it works. I credit him for introducing me to The Firm, Joe Tex, and Bloodstone, among others. But I'm probably most grateful for getting turned on to "Cat People" - a true Bowie gem. Here are my favorites: Foxy Brown - Letter To The Firm Joe Tex - The Love You Save The Coasters - Down In Mexico Nancy [...]

As you may of may not have noticed, I was absent from my usual time slot last week due to being a fun and adventurous college student. I was on spring break! Now I know what you're thinking: beaches, unruly alcoholism, Jersey Shore.... NO. Come on guys, I'm a classy broad. I went on a road trip! Me and 4 friends piled in a big ol' jeep and drove straight east from Claremont, CA into the American Southwest. What an experience, my friends. Over the course of the week I had about 16,000 new experiences. I went to Las Vegas, [...]
Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle with You (1972): Tonight's show features "Stuck in the Middle with You," the classic tune from 1972 by all-but-forgotten Irish Folk/Rolkers Stealers Wheel . The song was a planned success and peaked in 1973 at #6 on Billboard's Top 100 charts. Ironically, it is a rebuff of corporate practices, shrouded in bubblegum folk/pop, designed to achieve chart success by parodying Bob Dylan's vocal styling. Most of you will remember the scene from Reservoir Dogs that continues to re-ignite interest in [...]
With the death of Charlie Louvin, one of the longest-running performers in music has passed on. With his brother Ira, he started performing in the 1940s as the Louvin Brothers. The country and gospel act was massively influential. Elvis Presley was a huge fan (the brothers were his mom's favourites). Ira, a racist drunk, died in a car crash in 1965; Charlie continued to record and perform for the next 45 years. Alas, the Louvin Brothers are often remembered only for the cover art of their 1960 album Satan Is Real (the story of which is HERE [...]

With all due respect to the recently deceased. Tonight, I was working from home. I read a bit, did my dishes, and then headed out to a local restaurant/bar in my overly-hip and totally uncool Brooklyn neighborhood. I sat down at the bar to eat as I always do when I go out for a late dinner by myself. I know the owner and the staff fairly well, and I like them all very much. There were a group of men sitting at the bar who had all probably had too much to drink about an hour before [...]
Baker Street Is quiet tonight.

Gerry Rafferty, former member of the band Stealers Wheel and a solo artist known for the 1978 smash "Baker Street," died yesterday in England at the age of 63. Over his career Rafferty sold about 10 million albums. His 1978 album City to City reached No. 1 in the United States and the single "Baker Street" made the Top 10 in both Britain and the United States. So did "Stuck In The Middle With You," which Rafferty and Joe Egan recorded as Stealers Wheel in 1972. That song reached a new generation of listeners [...]

Stealers Wheel: Stuck In The Middle [ purchase ] Cineastes recognize this song from its prominent placement in 1992 crime flick cult hit Reservoir Dogs, where it provided an ironic counterpoint to a policeman's torture. But long before it took on the underground, this summery seventies folkrock tune was a classic rock staple - one that sold over a million copies upon its release, charted in the single digits in both the US and the UK, and lingered long afterwards on a thousand retro radio playlists. [...]

But admit it -- you know you get misty every time you hear the Bette Midler tune playing at Barbara Hershey 's funeral at the end of ' Beaches .' It's ok, so do we. -- MM 44. Gerry Rafferty - "Baker Street" MP3 Foo Fighters - "Baker Street" MP3 It's going to be tough to justify this one. I first started thinking about Gerry Rafferty when I was driving home from Boulder, Colo., recently. "Right Down the Line" came on some generic easy-listening station and I was frozen in my seat, warmed by the laid-back whiteboy grooves as if they were a hot-shot of heroin (not [...]

This week the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were handed out in L.A. in advance of the March 7th award show. With ten nominations for Best Picture this year and all but locked up races for the Best Acting awards it was difficult to be too upset with all the nominations. Every year it seems the Academy does a fairly piss poor job of recognizing the music in movies, opting to nominate every ridiculously happy Disney tune over the darker entries in movies that are a little more adult oriented. Why this is I suppose we'll never know but [...]

Hi, do you know Conor Oberst? Of course you do. You first knew him as Bright Eyes. What, I don't know if you liked Bright Eyes; you never told me. I can't keep track of everything you say you liked. I'm just here to share, baby. Sometimes I don't even remember what I wrote last month. (Which wasn't much, actually, so I guess I have an excuse there.) He did a little bit of this before Bright Eyes and a little bit of [...]
