The Brooklyn based Indie duo that is now Steel Phantoms (the band lately went through some line up changes) has just announced that they are set to self-release a new 7-track EP on July 16th. Former Islands drummer Aaron Harris pairs with Jessie Newkirk to bring you a special sect of Post-punk/Indie Rock that plays back like a catchy flood of dissonant guitar riffs, pleasant vocals and an ironically balanced composure. Listen/download the song "Curtain Call" (not an Eminem cover) from their upcoming EP below. Check them out at Muchmores on the 18th and Cameo Gallery on the [...]

Here is how the headlines will remember the week. President of the Catholic League is so fired up at Bowie's "The Next Day" music video that he called the pop star a, "switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen", while the media hedgefund-scaled hype surrounding The Great Gatsby redux only further reminds us of our current-crap-economic conditions, that finds Santigold moonlighting on "The Office" along with Clay Aiken and Aaron Rodgers to find "The Next Grea...

I'm thoroughly impressed by the work of the duo, Steel Phantoms . When I first heard this track, I thought the group might approach the sound of Dodos, but they totally turned it up a notch, adding a more raucous element with the pounding of the drum section. Sure, they mellow out momentarily in parts, but the whole of the track is much more forceful. The band has a new self-titled EP that's heading your way on July 16th, and it's figuring to have a heavy spot in your summertime rotation, combining sprawling [...]

Brooklyn duo Steel Phantoms (ex-Islands) have a new S/T EP in the works (their second) of which the catchy indie rock and roll of "Curtain Call" is the lead single. Reminiscent a bit of a heavier (instrumentally) yet less Rod Stewart-y (vocals) Walkmen, "Curtain Call" brings the pace, energy and joyousness as well as sound songwriting execution to its genre that in 2013, etc that has been all and too well missed/missing. Steel Phantoms ( Soundcloud ) Rating 8.3
Jamaican Queens recently released their new video "Kids Get Away" on Noisey . The Detroit Trap Pop group's new song features lyrics about some kids in a rough neighborhood slicing up the face of one of their acquaintances. Sounds a little dark. Check out the Noisey interview for more info. Click here to view the embedded video. We've got Jamaican Queens playing here at Glasslands on Wednesday, 1/16 with Wild International , Ludwig Persik , and Steel Phantoms . Get your tickets here .

Steel Phantoms are back with a jangly new single (sans keyboards). They are now a duo and have a slightly punk-ier sound, but don't worry they are still catchy as hell. The single should get you excited for a whole album of Steel Phantoms singing drummer goodness. Listen. Steel Phantoms - Curtain Call B rooklyn's Steel Phantoms have been churning out these fantastic rockin tracks for a couple of years now, and with a lineup addition, and a punkier/raw direction they are releasing "Curtain Call," a rollicking track that slams the cymbals & rocks the house at a feverish pace, and relents only during the bridge, it's an energetic track that will get you moving. [Photos by acidjack] Brooklyn's Steel Phantoms had been on my list of bands to see for awhile. The band makes catchy, tightly-wound rock n' roll that incorporates elements of 80s postpunk, new wave and prog-rock, and it is an infectious combination in any setting. Though they were the first act on a four-deep bill at Cameo Gallery on this night (and had the good nature to joke about it), the Phantoms owned the rapidly-filling room with their rapid-fire set that featured mostly-new material, plus a total of three tracks from their Forer and [...]

Vancouver quintet Said the Whale (@saidthewhale) drew a modest but effusive crowd at the Rock Shop on Saturday night, touring in promotion of their March release, "Little Mountain". The group showed some breadth in their sound, from the tight and polished "We Are 19803 to the sentimental folk harmonies of "Big Sky, MT". Steel Phantoms (@steelphantoms) opened the show strongly with some reverb-infused garage rock on melodic rails, while Howth (@howthmusic), at the middle of the lineup, was an unexpected gem, delivering an emotional punch [...]

It's not my favorite genre, but I have to say that this EP is very pleasant to listen to and is by far one of the best-recorded things I've recently heard. It's not often you hear such a deep voiced singer, and I'm obliged to make Magnetic Fields and the National comparisons. Altogether, this is very much worth a listen, if for nothing more than the excellent harmonies. Enjoy. Forer EP by Steel Phantoms

Along with childhood friend keyboardist/vocalist Yos Munro and guitarist Jesse Newkirk IV, drummer/vocalist Aaron Harris, formerly of the eccentric indie rock band Islands, craft sparse and magnetic rock songs with new wave and avant-indie flourishes under the Steel Phantoms moniker. The trio delivered a delightful second EP, "Forer," after fundraising it via Kickstarter. Evocative of The Magnetic Fields' timeless melodies immersed in a more modern, electric and percussive musical context, the record is named after psychologist Bertram Forer, who developed a theory according to which "normal" people are more likely to believe positive things about themselves rather than [...]

Australian five-piece WIM just finished up quite a successful run at CMJ, scoring a CMJ discovery bookmark from NPR and now we're excited to snag them for a set at Glasslands this weekend. Their billowing, moody pop recently found a home on Modular via which the guys released their self-titled debut earlier this year . It's lead single "See You Hurry" comes complete with a mysterious video and more recent remix from Twin Shadow. Click [...]
There is an immense amount of music I want to share, hopefully I'll be able to get it all out in the next week. Did you ever watch that tv show where the girl could stop time by touching her fingers together? I thought it was mind blowing when I was like eight. If I [...]

As you've probably noticed, I haven't exactly been overflowing with new music this week. A large amount of this is down to the fact that it's been the sort of week which has been constantly disrupted, meaning I've had almost no time to sit down and properly digest anything. I have noticed an unusual number of people pushing their mewling progeny around the streets of Edinburgh with the buggy in one hand and their mobile phones in the other, squawking away like over-excited fucking geese. I wonder if there has been a recent rise of babies with phone-related [...]

Steel Phantoms – Bedouin [Right click for download] [...]
