Star Beat tipped us off that Steel Train has announced two holiday Maxwell's shows December 29th & 30th. The NJ group is fresh off the "use your SOLE" tour, which featured Hanson & Hellogoodbye. These headlining dates won't be just be like any other shows though. Steel Train has decided to let the fans choose their setlist. To find out exactly how this will work, check out the message below. Evan (aka Clark Griswold, aka Santa Claus) and his elves, Jack, Daniel, Justin, and Jon, are currently putting together a list [...]
Did you know that Stark is two years old? I mean, none of us really know exactly when the blog's true birthday is, so sometimes we have to fudge some forms here and there. Plus, we know a sweet fake ID guy. But I think we can all agree on an official start season of late fall 2007. That's when Vince and I bonded over indie rock music and became BFF's, and then Matt came in the picture, and the rest is history, as they say. (They say that, right?) It's important that you understand this background. [...]

Say hello to the happiest band in the world. My mourning period for the Format is officially over with the release of fun. 's video for "All the Pretty Girls." This is the first video and single off of the band's wonderful debut album, Aim and Ignite , and hopefully it will be the first of many to come. MP3 : fun. - "All the Pretty Girls" Love, Adrian
MP3: Steel Train "You and I Undercover" Download a free new Steel Train song titled " You and I Undercover " here . Expect the new album to drop 2010.
Steel Train will be performing on WRGW, GW Radio tomorrow (Tuesday - 10.20) at noon. According to the group "You can expect to hear a new track or two in addition to some of our favorite cuts off of Trampoline." You can live stream the show here . Steel Train is currently in the middle of the "use your SOLE tour" with Hanson & Hellogoodbye, which wraps up in Anaheim November 11th. Unfortunately the tour didn't pass through NJ, but did make a stop at Manhattan's Nokia Theatre this past Thursday. You can find all [...]

I must confess the first thought that went through my head when I arrived at the Beaumont was "Damn. I'm old." Hanson 's "Use Your Sole" tour, which featured Steel Train , Sherwood and Hellogoodbye , attracted a crowd of girls, aged 12 to 16, and women aged in the early 20s to mid-30s. There were a few dudes at the show, too. The ladies in the crowd were in high spirits through the entire show. [...]
I've been hyping Fun since I first got wind of it from my boy Andy Dost. And I'm still riding this bandwagon, because their debut, Aim and Ignite is pure pop bliss. While I'd be lying if I said there were no weak moments, they are few and far between. You're met with the kind of bouncy, thoughtful pop music you'd expect from members of Anathallo , The Format and Steel Train - and then some. Fun - All the [...]

You name your band Fun , and you better be able to hold up your end of the deal. Which is exactly what the New York-based six-piece did Monday night at Spaceland. Playing the opening slot on a night that featured three of Los Angeles' most passionate young bands, Fun fairly stole the show with its complex hybrid of jaunty pop, glam and white soul. Fun has a following equal to its name, too. Spaceland was packed by the time the band's set started at 9:15 — not the usual Silver Lake crowd, either — and it [...]

Back in early 2008, I was fiendishly checking The Format 's website and MySpace page, in hopes of hearing new snippets of material they were rumored to be working on.Unfortunately, one day I arrived at the site to see that the band was no more, thus leaving a void in my smart-pop section of iTunes. Luckily for us fans of The Format, Nate Ruess started a new band with Andew Dost , formerly of Anathallo , and Jack Antonoff of Steel Train and [...]

My boys in Fun have just announced two tours over the next few months in support of their debut, Aim and Ignite , which will be out Aug. 25 from Nettwerk. Additionally, the band is releasing the single All the Pretty Girls Aug. 4 - which is easily one of my favorite Fun tunes. And if having insanely catchy songs that sound like all of the best parts of Anathallo , The Format and Steel Train put together wasn't good enough, they were able [...]

When I think about it, The Format was really only one of the few of my truly favorite bands that ever called it quits. Upon hearing the news I was devastated. Fortunately, Nate Ruess of that now defunct group decided to join forces with Steel Train's Jack Antonoff and Anathallo's Andrew Dost to form Fun, a band that packs just as much of that cheerful pop sound that made the Format into what it was. A while back I posted Fun's first demo of a little ditty called "Benson Hedges." Since then, the guys have released a couple [...]

It's not like I needed much convincing to fall head over heels for Steel Train . I was already a fan of a good portion of the band's work. Plus Jack Antonoff is in Fun , after all. I was most of the way there, right? But Steel Train gave me everything I could've wanted - and then some - at Headliners Wednesday night. In addition to being tight instrumentally and vocally, they went nuts on stage. Don't let the whole Drive Thru Records thing fool [...]

Production Simple is bringing Gomez and Steel Train to town Wednesday. So I'll be at Headliners with bells on. The only problem is that she show overlaps with Broken Spurs , The Features and Meat Puppets at Waterfront Wednesday. But we all have to make hard decisions in life... Transformers or Gobots, Hot Wheels or Matchbox, Charmin or Quilted Northern, Risk or Stratego, Tucks or Preparation H, The Features [...]
During my high school years in rural Ohio/Kentucky, I would spend plenty of summer nights driving around on backroads (and I'm talking backroads here) with the windows of my 1988 cherry red Chevrolet S10 4.3 down, blaring some music. And since the last couple of weekends have been spent back home, I've been doing plenty of similar driving - just with a 2002 Ford Focus instead. Needless to say, I came up with a mix for my driving escapades. No stupid themes or concepts. It's getting summery out, so it just needed to be jams I could listen [...]

As if you haven't heard us talk about Fun enough over the last months, we've got some more info to share today. The band has released all the details about Aim and Ignite , the supergroup's debut album on Nettwerk . It hits streets Aug. 25, and I can't wait. When I saw fun the second time a couple of weeks ago, I was already able to sing along with most of the hooks throughout the set after only hearing them once. So that fact bodes well for an album [...]
It's really a wonder to me that (as far as I know), no other band has named themselves "Fun". Seriously, how does that work? Everybody loves fun, right? Why no band named fun then? I suppose that will have to remain one of the many unanswered questions in the world. Back to the band now... Who is Fun? You could call them a supergroup, I suppose. The band is composed of Nate Ruess (of The Format), Jack Antonoff (of Steel Train) and Andrew Dost (of Anathallo). That's a pretty [...]

It's been a loooong time since I did a Perch Mix. Not sure why exactly, as the Perch Mixes are my favorite part of writing this blog. But I had some time on my hands today, so here's a brand new Perch Mix for everyone. Enjoy! 1. Bishop Allen - Oklahoma [ mp3 ] 2. Steel Train - Alone on the Sea [ mp3 ] 3. Jenny Owens Youngs - Led to the Sea [ mp3 ] 4. Metric - Gimme Sympathy [ mp3 ] [...]
