Ever wonder what will happen during the last five minutes of late-night TV talk shows? Here are tonight's notable performers: The Late Show With David Letterman (CBS): Carrie Underwood Country-pop singer Carrie Underwood is supporting new album Blown Away, which drops tomorrow. The Tonight Show With Jay Leno (NBC): Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon [...]
With their latest record, the Steep Canyon Rangers have given their listeners yet another reason to keep listening. It's rare that a band can take a three-year break from playing their own music, but, in the meantime, gain popularity and earn awards and acclaim from their peers, critics, and fans. But anything is possible when you add Steve Martin to the equation (for you math majors, Steve Martin + X = Better). Since their last solo release, 2009's Deep in the Shade, the Steep Canyon Rangers have been busy touring and recording with...

Bluegrass emboldened with newgrass, country and gospel Having hooked up with Steve Martin in 2009, this quintet gained mainstream attention that mirrored the renown they'd built in bluegrass circles over the previous decade. After backing Martin for a tour of his 2009 album, The Crow , and collaborating for last year's Rare Bird Alert , they now return to their own work and original material. The only cover in this lot is Tim Hardin's "Reputation," sung at a tempo that inches towards the Association's [...]

Once again, we're off to spend the weekend at the always amazing Joe Val Bluegrass Festival out at the Sheraton in Framingham, MA. This year's lineup is stellar as always, with young sensation Sierra Hull, Steve Martin touring and recording companions the Steep Canyon Rangers, new Boston-based all-girl quintet Della Mae, long-time fave the Clare Lynch Band, and special guest spots from banjo master Bill Keith and folk singer-songwriter Jonathan Edwards holding down a powerhouse three days of music. We've covered most of these artists before, so instead of fishing for some new [...]

Bluegrass ambassadors, The Steep Canyon Rangers (SCR), have just signed with Rounder Records. SCR's lead singer Woody Platt says the Rangers "are honored to join Rounder Records and be a part of such a rich musical history. We plan to record our new project in October of this year and hope to have an early [...]
Earlier this week, Hayes Carll released the official video for his song "Another Like You." I already shared a live version of this song a few weeks ago, but this clip is a must see. Make sure you read the headlines on the cable news show and stick around for the cameo from James Carville and Mary Matalin. If you're looking for another fun tune... Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers have also released a video for their song "Jubilation Day." And while [...]

There's something satisfying about knowing that Steve Martin is the world's preeminent claw hammer banjo player. SEE ! "Jubilation Day" is the first video off of Rare Bird Alert the follow-up to his grammy award winning album, The Crow. I've also spent my entire day watching Steve Martin play the banjo so here's a video and another video . This one too .
Steve Martin, juggler, joins with the Steep Canyon Rangers on this satisfying bluegrass recording.

When Steve Martin released his first bluegrass album, 2009's The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo , I mostly ignored it at first. Even though it was released on the famed bluegrass label Rounder Records and featured appearances from Tim O'Brien, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, and Earl Scruggs (to name but a few), it was hard for me to view it as anything other than a novelty. I wouldn't purchase a polka album from George Carlin or a ska record from Bill Cosby. Why should I care about a bluegrass record from Steve Martin? [...]

Steep Canyon Rangers press photo Imagine seeing Vassar Clements, John Kahn, Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs and Tony Rice.... The Steep Canyon Rangers match the virtuosity of said musicians. The Rangers primed their music careers pickin' and a-grinnin' on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, where they frequently played bars on Franklin Street and fraternity houses. Now... Carnegie Hall !!! This is HUGE! The Rangers played February 26 at the Lincoln Theatre in downtown Raleigh. Having attended this show and previous shows of theirs, one interesting observation to [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Elvis Perkins In Dearland just got way more than they asked for when they called up the folks at Newport Folk Festival recently, looking for tickets to this year's event. Organizers one-upped their request by inviting the band to bring their instruments and perform. One of the festival's producers, Jay Sweet, tells Spinner that "It took all of 60 seconds for them to think about it." The addition was the result of impeccable [...]

Just a quick off-schedule note today to let folks know that I'll be spending most of the weekend at the always amazing Joe Val Bluegrass Festival out at the Sheraton in in Framingham, MA, and if you're within the driving circle, I hope you'll join me. As I noted in our glowing review of last year's festival , despite the stereotype of bluegrass as a predominantly Southern American phenomenon, New England turns out to have a long-standing tradition of great bluegrass. The Joe Val Fest, which honors the memory of one of [...]
