One of the only singers out there still reviving the punk movement, Peaches, has opted to go all disco on us. The Canadian rocker is about to release an EP that will consist of disco-era covers in 2012. Joining her on the Casablanca Reworks EP are the Gomma All Stars, aka Gomma Records artists Moullinex, Telonius, Munk and The Phenomenal Handclap Band, with originals by Michael Sembello ('Maniac', from the movie 'Flashdance'), Harold Faltermeyer ('Our Love', as made famous by Donna Summer), Giorgio Moroder ('You Can't Run From My Love', as made famous by Stephanie Mills) and the Skatt Brothers ('Walk [...]

Gomma Records has taken the lead as one of my favorite labels in the past few years, consistently delivering swoon-worthy releases and never missing a funky beat. Recent releases have been some of my favorites of 2011 including The KDMS "Tonight", Mercury "Sweetness" and Telonius "Last Night". Especially with their next release on the horizon, it's apparent that Gomma is among several record label's who are helping to revive disco and resuscitate popular music in general (think DFA, Kitsune, and more and more coming up). With a stellar cast of international artists including Telonius , Munk [...]

For me, September 22 will live in infamy as the day the music died -- twice. Losing R.E.M. was a terrible personal blow because the band provided the soundtrack to so much of my life. But at least R.E.M. lived to enjoy years of mainstream popularity and multi-platinum success, two things that sadly always eluded Vesta Williams . When I saw that "Vesta Williams" was trending on Twitter, I knew she wasn't finally getting her due after decades of neglect. The breaking news was that she had been found dead in [...]
Actually, disco never died. It was hiding in soundclouds under the category "nu disco." Tricky bastards. Same concept as traditional disco - nu disco has catchy loops, funky guitar chords, trumpets (if necessary), and bass lines more ecstasy-inducing than a zj. However, nu disco sounds much more electronic and like it belongs in 2011. If you [...]

Gigamesh doesn't really needs introducing. This is only because you should already know all about him. One half of legendary remix team Discotech , and one half of Senor Stereo, this man knows his production. With a sleuth of brilliant Gigamesh remixes available, it was difficult to pick one, so I had to pick many. Today our man Mayer Hawthorne dropped a free 6 song cover EP, "Impressions". The set includes on point covers of The Isley Brothers, ELO , and this champagne and rose petals come hither take on Chromeo's Don't Turn the Lights On. Think Latimore, Ashford and Simpson, Stephanie Mills, that real syrupy R&B. Mayer lays it down smooth as silk. Mayer Hawthorne - Don't Turn the Lights On (Chromeo Cover) Mayer Hawthorne: ( Myspace ) ( Facebook ) Rating: 8.2

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Tony Peluso , who played lead guitar with the Carpenters before becoming a successful producer, died on Saturday, June 5 in Los Angeles of heart disease, according to the Hollywood Reporter . Peluso, 60, was a four-time Grammy winner who made an impressive mark on the world of pop music, performing and producing on records that, in total, sold in excess of 150 million copies. Peluso got his start working with teen idol Bobby Sherman in the late '60s and [...]
Late disco, proto house sound.
Late disco, early house sound.

Continuing on a disco path here's Noodleman , a deep disco dj/producer from our close neighbor to the north. Reworked, reedited and heavily buttered, I'm really liking his stuff. He's signed to the Toronto label, Vibing Records, who's motto is cooking deepness and enjoying serving it to people. The Noodleworks 001 EP will be released this Thursday, February 11th. Oliver Cheatham - Get Down It's Saturday Night (The Noodleman Edit) Silver Convention - Fly Robin Fly (The Noodleman Lost Temple Dub) [...]

I thought that this series would come to a natural end with 1979, but the early 1980s were not as deficient as one might imagine. The difference resides in the volume of quality and the widening chasm between the great and the utterly abject in the '80s. A lot of bad soul music was created in the '80s, and the genre has never recovered. The next couple of installments of Any Major Soul will, I hope, highlight the bright spots in a declining genre. The two opening tracks, by Clyde Milton and Sam Butler , [...]

This is very exciting news. Jody Watley finally got over her grudge of years and decided that it's not such a bad idea to reunite one of the greatest disco bands that this earth has seen. They are doing it for a TV show called Unsung, it's a little but at least it's something. Watley needs to realize that reviving her once hot solo career is out of the questions and it's about for a huge disco revival. Already artists like La Roux and Little Boots are revisiting the genre. Check out "Night To Remember" and my personal favorite "I [...]

Here it is: One of the best disco tunes ever written, period. You can find this ubiquitous release hidden in your dad's record collection sandwiched between Barry Manilow and Barabara Striessand LP's . It wasn't even released as an A Side for chrisakes ! Had the world circa late 70's gone mad or was there so much quality music coming out that they could afford to toss this one on the flip side? Correction, it was an A Side in its UK pressing only. Ok Black Shag, you [...]
