Cosmic Sound – VHS Vision

Cosmic Sound – VHS Vision Cosmic Sound is Stephen Farris , and VHS Vision was a side project he made during a brief hiatus in the middle of 2010. You can hear how it influenced the far-reaching sounds we heard on Cosmic Sound II , and West Virginain label Crash Symbols is re-releasing it on one hundred limited edition cassettes so you can experience how it was meant to be heard. Stephen Farris – "Feel 4″

Stephen Farris – "Feel 4″ I've been writing about Stephen Farris for almost two years and still can't believe he hasn't been picked up by any label. "Feel 43 is tight deep house with Alicia Keys samples.

If there was ever a moment in Stephen Farris ' musical career that one could describe as "calm" — see if you can find a better example at his SoundCloud resume/test site — then the first two-thirds of "Binaural" might qualify. Most of the tunes he's produced are surreal, attention-starved electronica masterpieces that shift and twitch with layers upon layers of sound. So, luckily, the remainder of the track dives into frenzied and cut-up vocal samples over metallic snares. This dude is ridiculous. Purchase Stephen Farris' most [...]

Dipped in December

Dipped in December Here we are, the very last mix of the year. December has been a great month for tunes, we've blogged about tons of new releases, but we know it's hard to keep track of everything, so here are our favorites from this past month in a neat little bundle. This month features tons of R&B vocals, spaced out instrumentals, and two rap interludes. Have a safe and happy new year, and enjoy the jams! Tracklist: AlunaGeorge - "We Are Chosen" The [...]

Stephen Farris does it again, and again, and again… If you took every single track that Farris has unleashed onto the internet, cut each one into tenths, then glued them together again you'd get the soundtrack to time travel, I'm sure of it.

LP: Stephen Farris – Into Bloom

LP: Stephen Farris – Into Bloom DID regular Stephen Farris recently shared with us the latest concoctions from his beat laboratory with " Into Bloom ," a collection of 8 new tracks to add to his ever-growing body of work. Farris has proven himself a brilliant, mutlifaceted electronic producer, with both of his last two albums spanning a wide variety of genres and styles. He has consistently put out great work all year, and where many artists tend to dilute their appeal by over saturating an audience with content, Farris [...]

Stephen Farris – "Elevate"

Stephen Farris – "Elevate" 'Elevate' is Stephen Farris working within a dubstep tempo, utilizing his CSII synths to pull together a quasi-dark progression of textures. Signature VHS samples make their way into the second bridge of the piece, and the pitch shifted squeals of a low-cut soprano ride their way out of his temporal environment. There has only been pure heat on his soundcloud since he made that Substitute Teachers mix for us, and I'm certain you'll be hearing more from him soon. [...]

For those who are unaware, welcome to Stephen Farris . The Dallas producer/DJ is very consistent at melting glitch, bass and cut-up synths with funk, experimental hip-hop and even sometimes disco, plus he's got loads of great tracks in his arsenal. Farris' music is busy at times but never gets too crowded. He's been unveiling a lot of new material in the past few months through his SoundCloud page, so there's plenty of tracks to explore. "RYDER" is the latest rush.

Substitute Teachers: Stephen Farris

Substitute Teachers: Stephen Farris Stephen Farris is a producer and visual artist based in Houston, Texas. He's my favorite unsigned producer at the moment, with three outstanding releases to his name that display a unique understanding of composition and form. I didn't know what to expect when he agreed to send a mix our way, but this work features a broad spectrum of influences - including a track he's made exclusively for the mix - and serves as the perfect introduction to his sound. Freeze-Tag

Freeze-Tag Hailing from Ohio, Freeze-Tag describes his music as "futuristic soul" inspired by retrograde tones. He also tries to do everything about music "in the spirit of jazz". Very interesting. We have some free downloads here from the man himself, so take a moment to digest Freeze-Tag's "prisma-chromatic" sounds. They are a bit on the minimal / simple side of things, not very jazzy at all but we've heard the new single "Eskimo" and that is THE ONE to wait for. Fans of Dam Mantle / Gold Panda / Stephen Farris will [...]

LP: Stephen Farris – Phosphorescence

LP: Stephen Farris – Phosphorescence Stephen Farris recently sent us his latest release, and it is really growing on me as a brilliant and varied assembly of tracks. Titled Phosphorescence , Farris ' new LP expands upon his last full length compilation, CS II , through tasteful rhythmic layering, superb effects wizardry, and complex sample manipulation. If you like bang for your buck you must head over to his bandcamp to grab the full collection for $5. Stephen Farris - Harps [...]

Stephen Farris – Cosmic Sound II [Album]

Stephen Farris comes from the land of Styrofoam cup ubiquity but instead of slab rap he brings an interesting combination of chillwave, hip-hop, '80s electro and funk. On his album Cosmic Sound II it's easy to believe you've got him figured out as an artist when the first song sounds like true-to-form chillwave (weird sample, mellow ambient sound) but the next immediately hits you with a sound that shouldn't be foreign to any fans of Dam-Funk. The album is stylistically schizophrenic but it's not a flaw, and it's better than being boring. Hit the skip to [...]
