If there was ever a moment in Stephen Farris ' musical career that one could describe as "calm" — see if you can find a better example at his SoundCloud resume/test site — then the first two-thirds of "Binaural" might qualify. 'Elevate' is Stephen Farris working within a dubstep tempo, utilizing his CSII synths to pull together a quasi-dark progression of textures. Signature VHS samples make their way into the second bridge of the piece, and the pitch shifted squeals of a low-cut soprano ride their way out of his temporal environment. For those who are unaware, welcome to Stephen Farris . The Dallas producer/DJ is very consistent at melting glitch, bass and cut-up synths with funk, experimental hip-hop and even sometimes disco, plus he's got loads of great tracks in his arsenal. Farris' music is busy at times but never gets too crowded. He's been unveiling a lot of new material in the past few months through his SoundCloud page, so there's plenty of tracks to explore. Stephen Farris is a producer and visual artist based in Houston, Texas. He's my favorite unsigned producer at the moment, with three outstanding releases to his name that display a unique understanding of composition and form. I didn't know what to expect when he agreed to send a mix our way, but this work features a broad spectrum of influences - including a track he's made exclusively for the mix - and serves as the perfect introduction to his sound. Hailing from Ohio, Freeze-Tag describes his music as "futuristic soul" inspired by retrograde tones. He also tries to do everything about music "in the spirit of jazz". Very interesting. Stephen Farris comes from the land of Styrofoam cup ubiquity but instead of slab rap he brings an interesting combination of chillwave, hip-hop, '80s electro and funk. On his album Cosmic Sound II it's easy to believe you've got him figured out as an artist when the first song sounds like true-to-form chillwave (weird sample, mellow ambient sound) but the next immediately hits you with a sound that shouldn't be foreign to any fans of Dam-Funk.
