In Ireland, blasphemy is prohibited by the constitution even though it is not a crime by law. However, that could change soon if a proposal by the Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern, gets the go-ahead. Here's what he has to say: "A person who publishes or utters blasphemous matter shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €100,000." Apparently, blasphemous matter would be material that would be considered highly insulting to a significant portion of the members of a particular religion. This raises a number of questions. What is [...]

Looks like a preview of summer is heading our way, with highs getting close to 90 in some places. The unexpected heat is not going to keep the weekend show line-up from happening. It's another full weekend, so I'm going to have to split it up into two posts. This one will cover Friday and those that also hit other places after Friday. Kings of Leon from band's myspace Quite a few big name acts start things Friday and [...]

Stephen Lynch - 3 Balloons (What Are Records?) If I could shut the lyrics off on Stephen Lynch's 3 Balloons the album would be listenable. He'd probably sound like a male version of Jewel (you know, before she got all slutty?)--in fact, the song "Dear Diary" (which appears in four parts on the album) reminds me of "Who Will Save Your Soul?" so much that it's scary. However, Lynch's lyrics are the sort of profane comedy stylings that would improve any sappy acoustic ballad tenfold. There's something reminiscent of Tenacious [...]

Sam Pink I Am Going To Clone Myself Then Kill The Clone And Eat It (Paper Hero Press) I've interviewed Sam Pink, I've exchanged several e-mails with Sam Pink, I've read his stories on-line, I have read his blog and I have even read marveled at his artwork, yet as I read through his debut collection, I don't know if I know anything more about Mr. Pink then when I started. Much of his book is written in first person, but I find myself asking what [...]

Hope you all had fun last night. Tonight and Sunday are just as loaded, so without further delay, here's what to check out: Eulogies (photo by brantley gutierrez, via bands myspace) Some bands are staring their multiple city stop Saturday. A very indie release week and a not-very-hardcore one. Sorry brosephs. I haven't heard anything on here but the new Decemberists record , so I can't recommend a whole lot first-hand. Ones that I'll probably give a listen: Dan Deacon, 1990s, Fever Ray, Fireworks, Merzbow, Mastodon, MF Doom, Fridge, Mono and Obits. Looks like I've got a busy day ahead of me. What are you gonna check out? :: 1990s , Kicks (Rough Trade) :: Amadou & Mariam , Welcome to Mali [...]

My birthday week went over pretty well if I do say so myself. Being able to have a crazy Wednesday filled with drunken ballroom dancing and stand-up comedy and a relaxed Thursday that involved reading outside all day and a nice Mexican dinner with a few friends, was an interesing balance. I was able to dedicate some time to listen to the new Stephen Lynch disc. It's as faux-charming and hilarious as one would expect from the musician trapped in the body of a comedian. [...]

He would probably watch Weeds . Kevin Nealon on 4/20 I'm no pot smoker by any means (although I have slightly dabbled in Hawaiian ganja), but I am a huge fan of the Showtime series. So when the above video was sent to me via email in celebration of the reefer holiday, I just had to put together an impromptu playlist for all you lovers [...]

Image From Penney Arcade I have the complete set of second edition books in my attic somewhere. I used to try to get a game going, but I mostly ended up getting made fun of. I never actually played DnD but I did play a bunch of pen and paper games and I even tried making up some of my own. I based them all around 6 sided die as my mom wouldn't let me have any other kind because pen and paper games were "demonic". Since my external hard drive failed I find myself without [...]
