Tras el dispar Love at the bottom of the sea (Merge, 2013), el incansable Stephen Merritt vuelve al ruedo este año.

On June 4th, Stephin Merritt' s Future Bible Heroes , the electronica-meets-disco counterpart to The Magnetic Fields , will return with their third album. Partygoing marks the band's first new full-length since 20022s Eternal Youth , and will be released through Merge Records. As a first listen, the band has shared "Living, Loving, Partygoing", a track that, like its name suggests, sounds like a bubbly, barrel of smiles. Listen in below. Anna Domino Land of My Dreams Aretha Franklin Land of Dreams I was anticipating Beach House 's latest album Bloom to be another stunning achievement, deeply affecting and moving, etc, having enthusiastically loved their prior output... But no such luck. I didn't loathe it, but just as with the most recent Destroyer album, it went in one ear and out the other. [...]

Last week, The Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merritt stopped by the CBS News studios to perform an acoustic rendition of "Andrew in Drag". Armed with an eight-string ukulele, Merritt transformed the synth-powered pop number into something more solemn and lonesome, as if he were standing on a mountaintop crooning and pining away to a long-lost love. In an accompanying interview, Merritt said he wrote the song during a night of heavy drinking, finding the lyrics (and his car still at the bar) after waking up at home the next morning. Watch the replay below (via [...]

After a triple dosage of no synth records, The Magnetic Fields appear to have been swept by nostalgia as they rekindle themselves with the sound that established them all those years ago. Yes, the return of the synth and if ‘Andrew In Drag’ is anything to go by, their forthcoming album, ‘Love at the Bottom... Read more..
How did you spend Halloween? If you're one of Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman, Moby or Stephen Merritt, you'd have been on the Craig Ferguson show doing a number from the Rocky Horror Show. The Audio Perv has got it for you to watch . -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch
Holiday marks the debut of The Magnetic Fields –not the debut of the band (that would be 1990’s Distant Plastic Trees ) but the debut of the band most people think of when they hear “The Magnetic Fields.” By this, I am of course referencing that 19942s Holiday (album four in the band’s catalog) is the first to feature Stephin Merritt exclusively on vocals. Merritt has always been the principle mover and shaker behind The Magnetic Fields. While he wrote most of the songs, the majority of vocal duties rested with the wonderfully twee-pitched [...]
This week's S-25 is dedicated to a random pick of 2011 songs that we really enjoy - some are well-known, or new material from established indie and alternative rock bands - like The Strokes, Beirut, Peter Bjorn and John, and Bon Iver - but many others are songs that we refer to as 'rarely heard,' [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

It has been a bonanza month at MM - our in-box overflows daily and here is another quick round-up of new stuff we've discovered. Once again we're entirely failing to do the artists justice, but listen to the songs and if you like what you hear please do investigate them a bit more! Hotel & Highways album Lost River is an easy-going folk-tinged meditation on the complexities of life that echoes the halycon days of Fleetwood Mac and CSNY . Try the effortlessly melodic Train Whistle and Heaven [...]

The Magnetic Fields' songwriter is putting out an album of rare, early material. Stephin Merritt is releasing 14 rare tracks from his Merge Records days. The record, "Obscurities," will feature tracks recorded before the Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs" came out. Most of the songs are from 1994-1999, and five of them are previously unreleased. Below you can hear "Forever and a Day," from the unfinished science fiction musical "The Song From Venus," which was a collaboration with Daniel [...]

Our rating: Synth-pop. Indie-pop. Electro-pop. Noise-pop. Folk-pop. Baroque-pop. For a band whose musical repertoire is so saturated with pop hyphenates, The Magnetic Fields are remarkably lacking in popular support. It’s not that they’re unpopular per se; rather they are simply not popular, at least outside of music aficionados’ heavily insulated circles. Unpopularity results from overexposure — the bittersweet the price of enormous success (see: Blunt, James.) What The Magnetic Fields have is non-popularity; unpopularity’s indie-approv ed, far less lucrative cousin. “To some, they’re an iconic band,” read the opening credits of Strange Powers, The Fields’ newly released music [...]

Just feast your ears on "You Can't Force A Dance Party" which might as well be the sequel to fellow dead-pan wunderkind Jonathan Richman's "Parties In The USA." We got to see Strange Powers at the SIFF cinema on sunday. I asked my friend Evan to share his thoughts because i respect his taste. The movie about the Magnetic Fields, and most notably Stephin Merritt, is quite entertaining for anyone who considers themselves a music lover. The documentary follows Stephin Merritt through his journey from being completely unknown to being mostly unknown, while being an icon to others. He has an uncanny way of rubbing people the wrong way, marching to the beat of his own drum. But for [...]
